We stayed in Cabin 5 and it was very nice. Enjoyed the fireplace. Free cross country ski and snow shoe rental was awesome. Staff was very nice and helpful. Great view of the lake. Comfy and cozy. Would like to come back.

We'd stayed here previously and really like it. When I heard that the water problem had been fixed I thought it would be the perfect place. However, the water system is still not working. The water is very salty and you still have to use bottled water provided by the resort. When checking in I had to initial that there would be a $25 fee if the dishes were not cleaned and taken out of the dishwasher. Since we usually leave early in the morning, waiting for the dishwasher to finish is a big inconvenience. Also, housekeeping did not show up while we were there and we had to go get towels from the front desk. Previously, the roads and walkways have been plowed and sanded early in the morning. When we went to drive out his week after about two inches of snow, we couldn't get out without pushing because the driveways were super slick with no sand, salt, anything. When we got back from skiing late afternoon, they were just getting going on the sanding. Walking to the lodge at 4:30PM the walkway had still not been shoveled and I slipped and fell hard.
The gentleman manning the front desk was very helpful, but the customer service at this place has slipped since the owners took over. I've never stayed at a condo/lodge/suite that required you to put away you clean dishes before leaving and never have I had to request housekeeping.
Time to look for a new place on the North Shore.

Sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. Our water is softened, so yes, in heavy use times it does have a salty taste. Unfortunately, it is very challenging to solve this problem since the solutions are in the 6 digits, but we have not given up yet! In the meantime, the bottled water we provide free of charge is excellent.

Daily housekeeping is a new service here since the new owners took over in June 2013. They make their rounds between 10 am and 2 pm daily, but did not enter your room because one of the doors was deadbolted. It is not a problem for us at the front desk to attend to your needs anytime. Your room was just down the stairs and we really didn't mind.

Shoveling, sanding and salting is done regularly from 8 am to 9 pm by our diligent staff. At times it is difficult to keep up with rapidly changing conditions. I'm sorry that you had a problem during your stay. We were not made aware of your difficulties until after you left, so had no chance to address them during your stay. We are very willing to bend over backwards to ensure our guests have a good time.
All the best for your future visits to the area!

We spent the last week of February 2014 at Solbakken, during an extremely cold week - and loved it. Our cabin (#6) was cute, cozy & comfortable. If we opted for the one bedroom cabins again, we'd choose cabin #5. The entire staff was very nice during our stay. Dale was very nice & gave us keys to view several different motel rooms & cabins for future stays. Margie allowed us to view a couple of the lodge suites & suggested some great snowshoeing areas. The best visit was the opportunity to check out the Guest House. It was BEAUTIFUL & has an amazing view! We very much enjoyed the use of the snowshoes & the park/trail information. We relaxed, made great meals & enjoyed the fireplace & accommodations. We'll be back again!

Room Tip: For 1 bedroom cabin, opt for Cabin 5. For 2 bedroom cabin, liked Cabin 4 best. The Lodge Suites ar...

My husband and I spent a winter weekend at Solbakken Resort. We loved our room (#12) with a kitchenette. Cozy room that was so comfortable. Nice having the kitchenette and an outside grill where we did our dinners. Nice view of the lake and the little cabins along the lakeshore. The log lodge was lovely, and people there were so helpful. Loaned us snowshoes to walk along the Cascade River. Have already recommended Solbakken to friends, and we will definitely be back.

We stayed at this lodge for a winter getaway, and loved almost everything. Great scenery, friendly staff (although not too knowledgeable about the nearby XC ski and snowshoe trails), situated literally across the street from an extensive XC ski system with the most beautiful trails I've ever been on, and good amenities. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed, except paper towels. The lodge has a number of lodging options, from cabins, to motel-style, to suites in the main lodge. The main lodge is not very sound-proof, so we often heard the housekeepers and other visitors. The hot tub was small and in a small room that was very dimly lit - not very inviting, but nice nonetheless after skiing all day. There is a shared space that is nice, with a fireplace, TV, pool table, board games, piano, and tea and hot chocolate. Our room had a view of Lake Superior, which was beautiful. Also included with your stay (but not well "advertised") is a free horse-drawn sleigh ride through the woods, complete with campfire and hot chocolate. You have to go to the next lodge down the road (about 5 miles), but it was a fun night activity.

Room Tip: A little noisy inside the main lodge, but nice to have the fireplace and patio.

Thanks for the great review! So glad you were able to enjoy the great outdoors during your visit. We really like providing a base for folks to get out and experience the North Shore. You must have encountered a new front desk person, since most of us are very familiar with the trails and maps are readily available and posted at the front desk. Your input on the spa will help us plan upcoming changes to that area. The 1930's log lodge has a lot of character and interest from a historical perspective which we want to retain. Many people return again and again and tell us that they love the atmosphere that is just not available in a chain hotel. Thanks so much and hope to see you again.

We spent the weekend between Christmas & New Years in the Trondheim suite and loved it! We are recommending it to everyone & will hopefully come back.

The suite has a rustic cabin feel to it – the kitchenette made it easy at mealtime and the 2 bedrooms were cute and comfortable. Since we are a family of 5, one of the kids slept on the sofa. We had 2 entrances to our suite – a door to the outside and the other door lead to the stairs to the main lodge.

On our first day, the weather was fabulous – 3 of us went skiing at Lutsen Mountain, which is a short drive away. The resort has a shuttle van, but we opted to drive ourselves. 2 of us borrowed cross country skis from Solbakken’s lodge, walked across the highway to ski the Hall-Massey ski trails. The temperature kept dropping and by our 2nd day it was COLD. Beautifully sunny, but 18-20 below zero with winds. The kids were happy to sleep in and we spent the afternoon hanging out in the lodge.

The lodge is something that has to be seen. It was originally built in 1934 and still has the massive timbers and stone fireplace. While we were there it was decorated for Christmas and Solbakken kept a fire going for all to enjoy. We watched football on the big screen TV, worked on puzzles, & played checkers. Hot water for tea or cocoa was available, and in the evening marshmallows came out for roasting. The employees were so nice & friendly! I honestly felt like I was up north visiting relatives.

I have no complaints, but a few comments to help anyone with their planning:
FOOD: Plan your meals & bring all ingredients with you. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, electric stove/oven, microwave, toaster, coffee pot & dishwasher. Bring your own paper napkins / towels / plates. There are no grocery stores or fast food places nearby, but there are restaurants within driving distance.

BATHROOM: Our suite had a ¾ bath (toilet, sink and a shower). The water pressure in the shower is low. Bring your own blowdryer.

My family spent two nights, in Cabin 2, over the Christmas holidays. What a great experience!

We arrived past dark, so we heard Lake Superior as we entered the cabin, but we didn't really get to SEE Lake Superior until the next morning. Wow!! We were steps from Lake Superior.

Our cabin had two bedrooms, a bath, and a kitchen/living room area with a dining table and a sofa in it. It was a clean, cozy, rustic cabin.

My family did the ski/sleep package. A shuttle takes skiers to and from Lutsen Mountain. Fun!

My family enjoyed time in the Lodge during our trip. There was a pool table, board games, books, hot drinks and a great space for hanging out in the Lodge. There was even a plate of homemade Christmas cookies out for guests to enjoy on Christmas!!

Every Solbakken employee we encountered was friendly and helpful. During our visit, I learned that "new management" has been there since the summer of 2013. Actually, the "new management" has been working at Solbakken for seven years!! He is making updates. I think he is planning on redoing the floors in the motel and building a deck on the Lodge in the next six months.

We appreciated that Solbakken was pet friendly. They provided sheets to cover furniture in case dogs like to join their owners on the furniture. We brought our two dogs with us, and we were all comfortable.

My three greatest compliments are: (1) the view, (2) the cleanliness and upkeep of our cabin and Solbakken's Lodge, and (3) the fabulous employees!!

If you are looking for something fancy, try somewhere else. If you are fine without the frills, give Solbakken a try.

Why not five stars?? I think cabin two's shower and bathroom flooring could us a facelift.
