“DO NOT HAVE YOUR WEDDING AT BIG SANDY LODGE”
Reviewed 1 August 2013

We were planning to have our wedding there, but they offer NO special services for the bride and groom. They claim they are a great place for weddings, but we tried to reserve rooms for our guests that were in our wedding party, and they wouldn't let us without 25% down on each place( about $300 per reservation). Now there is another party who booked rooms that took away from where our guests could stay. They are unwilling to negotiate on any terms. This is not a place you want to do your business. Poor communication as well. Sent multiple e-mails and it took weeks to get calls and e-mails back. Such a bummer for our special day. They did nothing to make it special. Also, very unethical. We booked our rooms, put our 25% down(nonrefundable), and then after we booked they sent us an updated price list which included items that were previously complimentary (shuttle, service on location, etc.)

Bob, thank you for the feedback on your experience with Big Sandy Lodge & Resort. We are sorry for the communication errors. We have updated our rates and yes the Shuttle Service with the increased gas prices and maintenance does now have a charge for that service.

I went there for a family reunion last week and me and my cousins really had a lot of fun with the water trampoline and the volleyball court! I stayed there for three days up in a cabin. I was impressed with how big the cabin was and it was very neat and clean it was. But after a day there, it was kinda boring. There was nothing else to do except what was at the resort which was pretty much the water trampoline and the volleyball. Plus, my cousins stayed in a room at the lodge and it wasn't anything to marvel at. Also, my cousin has diabetes and needs a medical dog to watch over him and I didnt think it would be a big problem at the resort but it kinda was. They told them that he couldnt have the dog but they really didn't do anything about it. I think if we were there for longer they wouldn't have let the dog stay there.(which is against the law) It was a very nice place but it isn't a good long term stay!

This was our 3rd visit to Big Sandy Lodge and our LAST!! Very surprised on how expensive one night during the week is. Not even summer yet. The staff didn't know much when we had questions. Tried to talk to a person at front desk but was on the phone and the other was checking stuff on her phone. No coffee anywhere, we were told there was brk. in the morning, but noting was out when we came down at 8. Not even coffee.... For the price a person pays you should get something other than a free tap/rail drink. One per room? REALLY !!

We were traveling and had planned ahead to stop for the night in Mcgregor. Not alot of options so we chose Big Sandy Resort. We pulled in and the lodge seemed amazing and there were amazing log townhomes all around the lodge that made for very beautiful scenery. We had a bite to eat in the restaurant/bar area and it took forever because they seemed to be way under staffed for the weekend crowd. By the time we got our food we just wanted to go to bed. We were tired from a long day of travel and irritated from having to wait so long for our food and bar service. We went up to our room and our room was freezing with no heat on. We turned up the electric wall unit and went to bed. The music was so loud from the bar downstairs that we could get to sleep. It was maybe 2ish before it was quiet and it never did really get very warm in the room. Also, our bed had a long black hair in it and there was some super gross "other " hair in our blanket. Ugh!!! I was totally grossed out!! Sorry but just saying................Really? Decide for yourself if you want, but I wished I would have known what we were in for, I might have just slept in the car!

We were extremely disappointed to read your review. We pride ourselves on giving guests a wonderful experience and are deeply sorry you were met with anything less. Please accept the following as explanations, not excuses.
The noise in the rooms above the bar is something we have gotten many comments on. This is a difficult problem to remedy as it would require major reconstruction to add the proper soundproofing. Our Front Desk staff have been trained to disclose the noise level when booking those specific rooms and have the same disclosure on our website. We are hoping this helps, at the very least, make people aware of the situation. We are looking at this problem from all angles and hope to find a solution soon.
Regarding your slow service and dissatisfaction with the state of your room; the weekend of your stay was our last open weekend before closing the Lodge for 'Mud Season'. It seems we allowed our focus to shift from the customer experience to the closing. This is unacceptable and we sincerely apologize for our lapse in attention to the details of our room and to you as our guest. During this time we will be doing a full re-training to ensure our entire staff is aware of the high standard we place on the importance of our guests and attention to detail.
We are extremely disappointed we allowed these mistakes to be made at your expense and are taking steps to be sure they do not happen again. We invite you to return to Big Sandy Lodge & Resort so we can show you our improvements and provide you with the great experience you should have had the first time.

Our group of quilters and scrappers enjoyed a great work space, good food, wonderful pool & spa time, and comfortable accommodations. All at an affordable price. We will be back next year!
Side note: The local quilt shop is worth the stop.

This was out first visit to the resort. There were lots of positives about our visit but some things that could be improved. We stayed in one of the lodge rooms, which are hotel-type rooms. The resort also has townhouses and cabins to rent. The resort's buildings are beautiful, clean and in great shape. The price ($99/night) for the lodge room was reasonable. The indoor swimming pool was nice, and the whirlpool looks over the lake. A few things were a little surprising: the lodge room was very small. It had just enough room for a double bed and one night stand. There was a wooden side chair but no other chairs (there were comfortable chairs in the hall outside of our room). Unfortunately, the room was directly over the 1st floor bar, which resulted in a lot of noise until after midnight. There weren't many people in the bar the first night, yet the music was loud and the sound of the people's voices carried. The second night was more loud, as the bar was full of people. The other surprising thing was the walking path through the woods. It was extremely short. If you enjoy hiking, you would have to leave the property get in much of a hike. But, there is a State Park not too far down the road, so that would be easy to do. Most of the staff were very friendly, but the one who checked us in and out -- not so much. And, some of the staff were pretty loud in their complaints about other staff. Not very pleasant to hear. In short, we enjoyed our stay, but it's probably not the right fit for us.

Room Tip: Lodge rooms are very noisy, becausee of the bar on first floor.

Stayed for first time for 3 nights in a Cabin overlooking the lodge. The facilities were excellent and the cabin was beautiful. Lake access is only 1 car width though.

Unfortunately we were hoping to find a nice sandy beach for our kids to play on but there were dead snails everywhere; not sure if excessive quantities due to the flooding up there this year in June-July.

This place would be perfect if they can fix the beach/snail issue.

Thank you for staying with us and providing us with your feedback. Yes, the snails were not normal and were due to the flooding in the area in the summer of 2012. That summer the lake rose to 6 feet above it's normal level, thus covering up our wonderful sand beach for part of the summer. We hope that you can return and enjoy the fun and beauty of the resort and the beach soon!
