I stayed here 2 nights to attend a workshop at the university and was very happy with the room, the hotel in general and the location, especially for $85 a night. Besides a bed, night-table, television, etc., the room had a fridge. small dining table, microwave and armchair (may have had a stovetop too---I forget because I didn't do any cooking). The room was big, sunny, clean and pleasant. I saw a review that complained about IKEA furniture and no pictures on the wall. For $85/night, I didn't expect anything really high end and personally, the bare wall decor---i.e. no tacky hotel pictures--is a look I like (depends on your taste). The wireless, true, is not very effective, but all you have to do is ask for an ethernet cable at the front desk and plug it into your computer and the wall and voila! The location for the university is PERFECT---about a 10 minute walk. If you like Whole Foods type food, you can walk (about 15 minutes) to Lund's at University and Central and buy healthy prepared salads, fruit, etc For going downtown, take the 6 bus right outside the hotel (you do need exact change so go prepared--in order to get back, I think you need to take the 6U--ask the driver before you get on!). The inn is on a busy street and you can hear some street noise from trucks rumbling by (the inn is close to a major highway). I am very sensitive to noise and feared I might not sleep well, but it does calm down at night, so I had no problem.

The staff was unfailingly helpful. When I reserved, they gave me a discount code to use on the airport shuttle. They lent me an umbrella when it rained and a few weeks after my stay, when I requested that they fax a receipt to my work the same day, they did it immediately.

If you want to be handy to the University, the location, space, commodities and service of this place are hard to beat for the price!

My adult daughter and I stayed at the University Inn for four nights, and I was delighted with practically everything about it. The university campus is within easy walking distance, as is Dinkytown with its restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and stores. We took buses everywhere, with no problems. Our room was clean and spacious; the shower was excellent; the staff at the front desk friendly and helpful. My only niggle is that the kitchenette was well-nigh unfurnished. It had cups, plates, and cutlery, but virtually no cooking equipment. I realize that people will walk away with things and thus the kitchenette can't be expensively kitted out, but this seemed pretty austere. A dish drainer or dish towel would have been nice, or a sponge, or a cheap cardboard salt-and-pepper set. Or more in the way of pots and pans than one small saute pan. As long as you're thinking exclusively in terms of fridge, microwave, and toaster you'll be fine, but anyone who really plans to do any self-catering will have to come prepared or buy a few things. I don't want to end on a negative note, because overall this was a great place. In previous trips to the Twin Cities I stayed in vastly more expensive hotels that were no more comfortable and not nearly as well situated. Oh, and -- the great advantage of there not being a daily housekeeping service is that you won't be awakened by the sound of vacuuming each morning!

Free parking, very clean, nice rates, contemporary lobby styling, close to UofM....what could be wrong with this place?

1. I failed to note this when booking. This is an "extended stay hotel" which means NO DAILY MAID SERVICE. I would gladly pay extra to get this service.

2. No wall decorations at all in room. There were numerous room accessories which were obviously obtained from IKEA. Note to management, IKEA does sell inexpensive pictures and frames; please consider making another trip. Even Motel 6 and Super 8 make an effort to decorate their rooms!

3. Very poor wireless internet. Despite having a wireless transmitter right outside my door in the hallway. I could not get a signal while sitting on bed or at the desk. I only could connect if I took my laptap into the kitchen which is right next to the hallway. There is an ethernet port in the wall next to the desk, but unfortunately, I don't regularly travel with an ethernet cable.

4. Most importantly, hotel is located within a U of M student neighborhood. Hotel's proximity to campus was negated by fact that majority of sidewalks in neighborhood between hotel and Dinkytown were unshoveled. My stay happened to coincide with freeze/thaw weather which had turned sidewalks into extremely treacherous icerinks! Unless you plan to drive everywhere you go, I cannot recommend this hotel.
