Description: Welcome to the Butcher Block, where meat is our passion; organic, grass-fed, and sustainable are our principles; and serving great-tasting food – with or without meat – is our priority. We’re inspired by the cozy neighborhood trattorias you find in Rome and throughout Italy, but we're located right here in Northeast Minneapolis. We chose the name "Butcher Block" in honor of Filippo Caffari, our butcher, who was a skilled master-butcher in Rome for almost two decades, before moving to Minneapolis to become head chef at I Nonni in Mendota Heights. Chef Caffari is one of the finest Italian chefs in the Twin Cities. To accompany our remarkable Italian meals, we offer an extensive Italian and international wine list, as well as many fine domestic wines and beers. Our goal is to fuse the best of Italian culinary skills with the freshest ingredients, so you can experience authentic Italian dining. The only passport required is your love of great Italian food.

“No Italian frou frou here.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

I love this restaurant because it doesn't advertise its "Italianess". No scenic murals on the wall or Italian flag colors on the tablecloths, and no black and white photos of a little bambino learning to make bread at his grandfather's bakery.

But the food is what one would expect to eat if one went to a good restaurant in Italy. The chef IS Italian, and the food is simple and excellent. No frou frou plates here, just good honest food.
I had the chef sampler and it was delicious. The pesto tasted like pesto, and the Ahi tuna with the avocado/yogurt sauce was to die for. And the tomato dishes aren't drowning in tomato sauce like in so many other restaurants.

My only mistake was having a martini with the food. Next time I'm sticking with the wine so as not to mute all the flavors in the dishes.

The staff was very attentive yet casual; no snobbiness here...just good Italian food.

“Fried Rice Balls”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

We dined here on 6/5/14 and had a wonderful time. Giuseppe was our server and he had just
moved to Minnesota two weeks earlier from Italy. If you go there, hopefully you can have the
pleasure of having this fine young man serve you.
Whatever you do, have the fried rice balls appetizer. That will start your meal off in the right way.

“Save money and go to Noodles next door.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2014

Server was very slow, didn't pay attention to his tables. Food was dull, only thing that was good was the wine. Tables are to close together and small. I have only sent back food once before and tonight was my second.

“Save your money and go to Fazolis”

This restaurant was extremely disappointing. Our server was awful and the food was very bland. I definitely would not recommend this for anything other than a glass of wine and desert.

“Par excellence”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2014

Spouse and I enjoyed our 5th visit to BB. Their Caesar salad is the best in the Twin Cities! Over the past 18 months, we’ve shared 4 pasta selections and 6 entrées and we have never been disappointed. Besides the Caesar salad (which is a must for us), our favorites have included the arrancini (rice balls), short ribs, lamb chops, veal liver marsala, chicken parmesan, gnocchi, rigatoni, and spaghetti w meatballs. The BB tops our list of ‘go to’ places for dazzling friends and out-of-town guests. Once we’ve tried all the selections on the menu, we plan to simply start over. The Butcher Block is that good.
