Owner description: A 6-mile paved bike trail from Fort Snelling State Park to downtown Minneapolis.

River road is a bike trail along the Mississippi. Minneapolis does a great job maintaining its side. St. Paul needs to take some lessons. Whether you're biking, skating or running, there are great views of the river and its activities. It can be very busy in the summer.

We just returned from a week long stay in Minneapolis. I have heard about the many greenways in the city but had no idea how magnificent they really are! The River Road Trail is certainly the prettiest. It winds along the Mississippi River past little parks, beautiful homes and wonderful views of the river. We stopped along the way at Lock #1 and Minnehaha Park. Both are worth the extra time. The greenway is very smooth for all kinds of wheeled travel and wide enough for two way bike traffic and foot traffic. It was so much fun. We walked and biked on this trail during our week stay and loved it. I really wish that all cities had access to a greenway system like the one in the Twin Cities.

Historical, beautiful and varied you'll find everything you need in this trail to escape from the city right in the city on both sides (minneapolis & st. paul) The trail has been improved over the last 10 years and has a walking lane separate from the bikes and blades. Some parts even have a dirt path that takes you into the woods. There are beautiful bridges, interesting homes and breathtaking river views. My husband and I were married at Bohemian Flatts just south of the University on the Minneapolis West Bank. We adore the river! The only concern is the traffic which at rush hour can be a bit congested.

Bring your road bike or mountain bike and enjoy a couple of hours on this trail. You will view miles of the Mississippi, the Wiesman Art building reflecting its silver surface upon the river, a slew of parks, gorgeous homes along River Road, and a few historical sites, such as the Minnehaha Depot. On most days, the trail is well-used by old and young, so watch out for those just starting off without their training wheels. I didn't notice places to stop for a beverage right on the trail, although it is simple to get off and ride down a side street to a cafe or Dairy Queen.

Take time to get off the bike and check out interesting sites along the way--Ft. Snelling can consume some time as can Minnehaha Falls.

Fortunately, Minneapolis offers rental bikes, "Nice Rides," all over the city, so even if you only have a morning or afternoon to spare, the River Road Trail is certainly worth doing. If you have more time to devote to cycling, this trail connects to several others such as Grand Rounds and the Midtown Greenway, so you can virtually spend several days exploring. I am grateful that a city like this provides such a resource to its residents and visitors. I wish more cities would make safe bike travel a reality.
