Description: Entering its third decade, the Dakota has long been a favorite of jazz legends as well as patrons who savor the best of both art forms, the virtuosity of kitchen and bandstand. You can eat in the dining room and enjoy music second-hand from the adjacent club room; but you can also enjoy the music in the intimate club while making selections from either the bar or dining room menu—the best of both worlds. Patrons must note that online reservations through OpenTable apply to the dining room only. For show information and club reservations please call.

This is a gem! Great shows in an intimate space really gives you a bang for your buck. Fair warning on this place....you can encounter very down-to-earth staff and very uppity staff so bring your sense of humor for the uppity folk. They are in continual trial and error mode with their menu. Typically the quality is good and the food is tasty...however, I have experienced some entrees that were pretty economical with the premium ingredient while charging the premium price. Caveat emptor, if your staffer is on the uppity side you are on your own...if the staffer is down to earth you are in luck...ask questions and they will steer you right.

I was in town for a business trip and was able to dine at Dakotas the night Irv Williams was playing. The music and food was wonderful, albeit it came with a $7 per person cover charge since Irv was playing. I don't think the cover charge was advertised on their monthly 'upcoming musicians' list. Perhaps that would be helpful so it isn't something people only learn of at the door.

The food seems reasonably priced, but the portions are small. The 'Day Boat Scallops,' which sounded too enticing not to order, came with two relatively small scallops. While listed as an entree, it was hardly enough to serve as full potion. The Chef Cut - a decent sized steak that came with a potato and broccolini side - was good, but it was over cooked. I asked for it to be cooked medium rare to medium and yet there was hardly any pink left in the steak. It was a thin cut steak, but tasted like it was on the grill a bit too long.

The desserts were well plated and delicious. Probably the highlight of the meal given the cost, size of dish, and taste.

The service was mixed. I felt somewhat unwelcome at the front door by the host - not sure if it's because I came in from out of town on a night when a local legend was playing the sax, or because I was not ready to be seated as I waited for the rest of my party to show up. The waiter was very nice, but seemed new to the restaurant. He was unsure about a number of questions asked about the menu. He was willing and did ask the chef to clarify a few questions in regards to allergies in the party.

All in all, it was a nice place. There's an upstairs balcony to go with the main floor seating. There's also a large outdoor seating area, which on the night I was there had a $10 bottle of wine special. Special wasn't good indoors, but if you were willing to forego the music and sit outside, made for a nice special.

My wife and I went here for a fun night away from home, looking to combine some relaxation and entertainment. We were not disappointed with our experience. While the menu is somewhat limited and prices a little on the high side, the quality of what we were served was quite good. My wife had the grilled pork and I the pan roasted hen. Both were tasty and filling. Our service was very good also. The show...Wow! Nachito Herrera is an amazing musician. We plan to see him again when he is in the area. The cover charge was definitely worth it. We'll keep our eyes open for more opportunities to visit the Dakota.

This is a very good room for music in Downtown Minneapolis. Visited for the first time on January 29, 2014 to see the Willie Nile and band. The service was very attentive and the food was good. The atmosphere was excellent.

The band seemed impressed with the venue and their performance was exceptional. Many people do not know his music and the venue was not sold out. Any fan of rock & roll music missed a great performance by a band touring a new classic record. Some of the best live music I have seen in many years.

The Dakota should consider booking this talent again soon. Hopefully the social media buzz will fill the place up.

What a great place! Music outstanding. Seating up close and personal with the artists. Usually just have cocktails, but have had dinner, salads and beef. Good. Love the music and environment.
