“Rustic, family friendly but food-meh for price”
Reviewed 16 July 2014 via mobile

Have come to GVL for several years now. Great rustic feel to most cabins and lodge (may really need some updating soon). Absolutely terrific activities and programs for young children. Spa wonderful. Golf courses are gorgeous (as is the overall landscaping). One area I have been consistently disappointed with over the years are the meals... steaks great (can't really go too wrong there); however limited or non - existent vegetarian options really make for disappointing variety if staying for several days. Also the time it takes to get your meal (dinner) is painfully lengthy... especially if you have children. To their credit they have programming in the evening for young children... (so be sure to sign up for it to avoid a long frustrating evening if you have youngsters). ...Will continue to return, it is a mn treasure, but may look at other meal options in future given price, limited vegetarian options, and wait times.

I recently submitted one review And it was not real positive, but not mean either, just tried to be fair. For some reason it isn't listed here anymore. I don't know what could have happened to it? Anyway, we stayed at the end of June with family. Our reservations were messed up, not necessarily their fault, it was confusing dividing it up between cabins/families. I felt things were very outdated, main lodge was musty. Our cabin was a lower level that was freezing from the air conditioner, the main floor which was ok, and the loft which was steamy hot as no air conditioning seemed to get there. There was a half full water bottle beside our bed when we checked in, and they took the kitchen towels the first day with the laundry and never gave us any new ones. The house phones to call the shuttle are very difficult to locate, used cell phone most often. The drinks were very weak and the food very average tasting for the prices. with the exception of some of the pub food (burger and pizza ). Had to compute via shuttle to activities. I will say the bed was extremely comfortable, and the kitchen had all the appliances and items you would need. Our beach/water near our cabin had quite a bit of green plants growing up in it, not real clear, but ok. All on all, not bad, just average, but not worth the price of staying there.

Room Tip: I don't have any suggestions for choosing a room..I would not go back to GVL based on our experi...

We thank you for your feedback. Every review and comment card is used to help form the basis for improving our performance, measuring guest satisfaction, and rewarding employees.

Our main lodge has undergone continuous, but significant improvements to preserve the historic and rustic integrity. As you may know, it was selected in 1979 for the National Registry of Historic Places and offers one of the most well-preserved examples of early resort log construction in existence today. This is well maintained with the guidance from the National Park Technical Preservation Service. As we are approaching our 100-year, the lodge provides visitors with a look into the past and a feeling of nostalgia upon arrival.

Our housekeeping team is filled with talented individuals who work daily to keep the resort and its amenities clean, orderly, and stocked. Mistakes happen and at seldom times things may be overlooked and we apologize for this inconvenience.

Our food and beverage department strives to offer the best resort culinary experience in Minnesota. All of our staff is well-educated and properly trained to create and offer guests the best in food quality and service. Farm to table dining is important at a couple of our restaurants trying to find fresh, locally produced items meanwhile providing a rich flavor, high nutrient dining with a high level of quality.

Again, we thank you for choosing Grand View Lodge and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future to experience why Grand View Lodge is the premier resort choice in northern Minnesota.

I don't normally write reviews, but figured I had some extra time and folks should know what to expect if staying at Bay Colony - Grand View Lodge. the experience was not what was expected. The location of Bay colony is right off of highway 371 so unfortunately you hear the highway traffic. The entire area of Bay Colony was way too busy for my taste. I wish they would have told us that before we booked. Bay Colony sits about 3 miles from the main resort which means you get to experience nothing of what you see in the pictures unless you drive. We are beach people and the beach at bay colony was too small and believe it or not they only have 2 fire pits to accommodate guests and therefore my family never could enjoy the fire pits because they were always occupied. 2 fire pits to support 12 units, not sure that makes any sense. I will say that that the room accommodations are nice, but not as nice as they should be for what you are paying. I could see paying for this if I had a better beach, a fire pit and possibly some privacy. If that is what you are looking for I wouldn't stay here. also the pool (which is only an indoor pool at the main lodge is like a baby pool and can noway support a large group of kids or adults. Wi fi at Bay Colony was horrible -- coverage never worked. AC was loud and didn't cool the back rooms well. Last year we stayed at Craguns and I have to admit this would be my choice again, I only wish Craguns would update their cabins but as far as a GREAT location, GREAT cabins right on the beach with privacy and in door and outdoor pools -- Craguns by far is the better option..

Room Tip: Do not stay at Bay Colony, I would recommend Roy Cabins or Main Lodge.

We thank you for your feedback.

The Bay Colony units offers duplex-style lakeview cabins for family-style vacations and is truly meant to allow guests a more private vacation stay being off main property and away from larger crowds. Plus with a 1000’ private beach area and dock system allows our Eastside guests a little more tranquility. Grand View is very unique in its lodging options because we offer any style of stay – simple to luxurious; plus the different location and style will carry a different experience for our guest over our 650 acres. Because we sell out of these style of units months in advance, we do encourage our guests to book earlier to get the accommodations they prefer.

Fire pits are something we already are increasing over on the Eastside area and our WIFI service in that area is always trying to improve in speed and range. We also have long term plans to expand our waterpark and pool facilities that will be more accommodating to kids, adults, and large groups. We would like to invite you back to experience another lodging type of unit and perhaps find the vacation style best suited for you and your family.

We travel with a large family group that has been coming to the property for decades. Overall it is a quaint lakeside resort that is great for the kids in the family. However, the owners should put some additional effort into renovating some of their older cabins, such as Loon Lodge. I will give them credit for updating the kitchen spaces two years ago, but I was really hoping they would have done something to the rooms this year. Unfortunately this was not the case. The rooms are rather dingy and appear to be the same as they were when Loon was built circa 1985. Loud in-wall A/C units were filthy (had to wash the filters out) and I'm suspecting was responsible for several respiratory ailments throughout the cabin (several folks were sick after a couple days). However the loud units do provide good white noise to block out any sound from outside the room. The bathrooms were quite poor - the tub is an old dirty Jacuzzi tub installed (I'm guessing) as original equipment. It makes climbing into the shower a bit annoying as it is very tall. The vanity was missing a bulb as well and the hairdryer was broken. Beds are terrible - super soft and lumpy - backaches and neckaches every morning.

The main common areas of Loon are generally ok, but the in-wall A/C unit in one side should be replaced. There is a new A/C unit in one side of the cabin which appears to work well enough. As mentioned before, the kitchens are relatively new, so thumbs up there (though the dishwashers don't really work that well).

Several of the newer cabins, and the rooms in the main lodge are quite nice in comparison, so I know there is potential for Loon if a decision is made by the owners.

Otherwise the property retains its rustic charm, but the pool area could use a refresh - the pool was quite cold and the area is pretty dirty (it gets a ton of use).

Restaurant-wise - Italian Gardens needs to be redone (I think it is moving so this may be in progress). The food is Olive Garden caliber at best. The main lodge does ok main courses but service is hit or miss (tables that arrive after you frequently have their food 30 min + earlier). Cru does a good job overall - best option for dinner hands down.

Bottom line, the resort needs to throw a bit of capital into upgrading some of its existing spaces and common areas, not just into building new cabins.

Grand View is a very large resort, but 2014 has been a year of drastic improvements. In the last two years, nearly 4 million dollars has been reinvested to improve several amenities, locations, and buildings on-site. Twelve cabins went under major renovation, while several other units were updated with brand new carpet and furnishings, kitchen updates and interior work. This included the Loon Lodge with new carpet, redone kitchens, new mattresses and more making it a favorite of large families and groups. The historic main lodge rooms were also redecorated, plus added new new technology and carpet for sound proofing.

We are dedicated to continue improvements on the property each year and creating a fantastic stay for all of our guests. This would include our seven restaurants which makes most of our menu items from scratch and are dedicated to creating a different atmosphere and flavor at each venue. Again, we thank you for choosing Grand View Lodge and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future to experience our new updates and added amenities year after year.

Grand View is the premiere Gull Lake resort. The grounds are breathtaking, the beach is beautiful, and our "cabin" was first class. The staff at Julia's was fantastic! A special thanks to Renee for being so kind. The pub food was fantastic. I would recommend this resort to anyone.

My wife come to Grandview Lodge annually to celebrate our anniversary. This year we stayed in the units called the Pines. Lots of room, clean, & quite. We partake in their breakfast buffet every morning. We normally don't like buffets but this one is different. The food if fresh, hot things are hot, & cold things are cold. Peggy was our server. She is efficient, friendly, & has an outstanding personality. She is a true asset to GVL. We like dining on the main floor in the old lodge & in their Pub in the lower level. The things we enjoy the most; the flowers, people watching in the lodge lobby, walking down to the lake, & delicious ice cream cones from the Chocolate Ox. This has become a tradition for us.

I recently stayed at Grand View with seven college friends for four nights. We stayed in one of the large single cabins that were built in the early days of GVL, but even though it was "rustic" it was still nicely kept and clean. The size and number and bedrooms/bathrooms was perfect for our large group of women. The cabin was stocked with the necessary dishes/cookware, etc. and we had no complaints.

The real benefits came in all the amenities. Everything was within walking distance and the options were endless. Many great restaurant options, the Chocolate Ox (candy and ice cream), a caribou coffee counter, great gift store options, a bar and even a great restaurant/bar on the beach. Add in the spa, boat rentals, traveling art pubs and then the lengthy list of "free" amenities like hour long pontoon rides, tubing, kids programs, hiking, biking, you name it. For golfers, the possibilities are endless and if you so desire to leave the resort (you don't need to with all the options they provide), there are many additional food and shopping options all within just a few miles of the resort.

Finally, I want to mention the staff. We did not encounter one bad staff member. Everyone was super friendly, incredibly helpful and clearly wanted to ensure we had a most pleasant stay. Mission accomplished. We can't wait to go back and many of us can't wait to take our own families back to make more memories here!
