“Terrible Wedding Planner”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2009

I scheduled my wedding to be held at the new banquet facility at Grand View in June of 2010, my parents and I spent a weekend at the resort in May finalizing plans and confirming availability. We were told by the on-site wedding coordinator that the date was available and that we were all set to hold our reception on the requested date in June. Several weeks later, and many phone calls and emails later too, I received notice that she had given our reservation away to a group of 450 people. Not only were we extremely disappointed to find out that our reception site was given away, but we were hurt by the 2 sentence email we received notifying us of the change. I would not recommend staying at an establishment that does not value their guests, and I would certaintly never recommend holding an event at Grand View.

For all weddings, no space is ever confirmed without a signed contract. For this specific event, the potential wedding party was aware of this, in which no progress was started to confirm reservations, meeting spaces, catering, etc. Grand View Lodge takes pride in producing memories that last a lifetime. It is not uncommon to stroll through our lush property and meet with a returning guest who may have had a wedding, special anniversary, or even a family reunion that returns here year after year. We also have multiple planners available to coordinate your special day.

I've reviewed GVL a couple times in the past and wanted to add my third. In the past we had stayed in the Roy Lodge Golf Villas and the Main Lodge- this time we were able to get a great deal on a 1 bedroom cabin on the main grounds of the resort. I was very pleasantly surprised. I had envisioned a rather dated, cold cabin. The cabin was very clean, modern, updated, and comfortable. The bedroom and bathroom were spacious, as was the HUGE whirlpool. There was a small fridge and freezer, and a microwave. The cabin slept 6 comfortably with 2 queens and a charming murphy bed in the living room. (This was Cabin 428, by the way).

My biggest annoyance on previous visits was somewhat inattentive front desk staff (namely our inability to check in early), however this time we were able to not only check in very early (1 pm, instead of 4 pm) and we were allowed to check out very late, 2 pm, which was fantastic given our short 1 night stay. Everyone was so friendly and accomodating. Their wonderful breakfast buffet was also included with our stay- I don't know if this is an off-season perk, but it was great!

Another new perk of the resort: they have completely gutted and remodled the pub in the basement of the Main Lodge. It is now "family friendly" while still a pub with a full bar, a nice sandwich style menu with a couple entrees, and many flat screens with sports and popcorn.

We chose not to eat dinner at one of the resort restaurants (the Main Lodge and Sherwood were the only options)- and instead went to Bar Harbor, a nice option just a couple miles away for those looking for something more casual.

All in all a great trip- we can't wait to go again! Next time we're looking at trying the new Roy Lake Cottages which look wonderful.

Our family enjoyed a wonderful two weeks at Interlachen (part of Grand View Resort) in Nisswa, Minnesota. We stayed in a 2-bedroom town home about 3 miles from Grand View Lodge. We loved it because there was something for everyone. My husband loved the first class golf courses, I loved the Glacial Waters Spa and shopping on Main Street in Nisswa, our daughters loved playing at the beach and the nearby mini-golf and go-carting. We also took advantage of the Kids Club so that my husband and I could have dinner out just the two of us.

We had daily maid service and the kitchen was well-stocked with cookware and dishes. I would have preferred coffee mugs to the small coffee cups. Who uses those anymore? We also had a washer and dryer in our unit--which is a must when you're at the lake. The two bedrooms and bathrooms were upstairs. It was a little strange not having a bathroom on the main level. We had enough space for the 4 of us considering the little time that we spent there. We had exceptionally good weather. We may have gotten cabin fever if it had rained a lot. Other family members had rented a 3-bedroom unit and it was quite spacious, but had the price tag to go with it.

A few things that could have been improved....The bedding that was provided was rough and scratchy and the pillows were lumpy. We'll bring our own next time. The knowledge level of the staff was a bit hit-or-miss. We were considered part of the Eastside Resort and I called the main lodge to ask if we needed to sign up for activities on our side of the lake. I was told, no, that we could just show up. Well, we showed up one morning for pontoon fishing and were told that, yes, we were supposed to sign up ahead of time.

*For activities offered to all Grand View guests, I recommend signing up as soon as the sheets come out--which was Sunday and Wednesday. Outings that are offered include: pontoon fishing, horseback riding at a local stable, golf clinics, and tube riding.

We're going back next year!

The unit my family stayed in was spacious and nicely furnished. It was on the lake shore and our view was fantastic. There were some annoying problems. The phone didn't work. The front door needed repair. This unit was a duplex and our neighbors voices could be clearing heard through the master bedroom wall. Front desk employees did offer to relocate us when I notified them of problems.
The indoor pool and water slide were nice, but there was no area for adults to swim in the pool as it was shallow and divided into several small areas.

I highly recommend Grand View Lodge for families. It is worth every penny. The rate may sound expensive, but we had breakfast and dinner included in our plan each day. The breakfast buffet was incredible and all the restaurants for dinner are fancy, yet kid-friendly. They even have playgrounds behind each restaurant for the children who can't sit still. All the restaurants have kid menus. The dinners were all delicious. The Kid's Club was great. Our 3-year-old still talks about how much fun she had. The cabins are clean and newly remodeled and the property is gorgeous and I never saw one piece of trash on the grounds! Flowers everywhere with cute little lamps lighting the paths that lead all over the property. Every single staff member is happy and helpful. If you enjoy golf, there are many courses to choose from and the staff at both The Preserve Golf Course and Deacon's Lodge Golf Course took good care of us. The pool and whirlpools are very nice also. It is nice that they have a bar/restaurant right between the pool and the beach. The property has lots of playgrounds for the children.

  • Liked — The quiet atmosphere and cabin being on lake.
  • Disliked — The room was not cleaned till late in the day.

Grand View Lodge has a couple of things going for it -picturesque grounds on beautiful Gull Lake and nice/updated lodging accomodations. After that, watch out! The service/management is far less than impressive, and not on the same level as the numerous "chain" hotels along Hwy 371, let alone a property that bills itself as "Minnesota's premier family, golf and spa resort". We held an event there with rougly 100 attendees and do not have the time and energy (it is still being spent trying to resolve all of issues with GVL's staff) to explain everything that went wrong. To mention a few blunders: 1) food served at the event was completely different than what we had selected pre-event, and in some cases, totally neglected; 2) we were billed for items that should have been provided but never were; and 3) check-in/check-out for our guests, and us, was a nightmare - reservations were left-off the list, wrong rooms were booked and there was mass confusion on the billing/charges (a month or two later, we are still trying to resolve this). The most frustrating thing, however, is not the numerous things that went wrong at the event itself, but post-event, trying to resolve everything with GVL. The staff is far less than proactive and motivated to make amends.

In summary, pre-event, GVL will tell you what you want to hear, hook you, and then, when the actual event arrives completely drop the ball on the execution. You can do much better - visit Madden's on the other side of the lake. The grounds may not be as picturesque, but as far as service goes, it is no comparison. You will save yourself numerous headaches and thank yourself later!

Our company has our annual sales meeting here every year. Overall usually a very good experience. The location is picturesque and if you are a golfer you will enjoy the various courses. The food has improved in Grand Views venues, but if you are planning a meeting here, don't expect much from catered events. Most of the golf villas, and cabins are very nice. I understand they have remodeled the rooms in the main lodge and several of the villas, which was needed. Although this property can get expensive, if you layout overall expenditures (food, travel, etc.) it still represents a good value if you plan right. Nothing beats the setting by the lake, some fishing or golfing, a nice steak on the grill and a cool summers sleep.
