six of us were at gull lake for a wedding

had dinner the previous night at Lost lake lodge

although the menu confused a few because of the 3-4-5 item pairings, the food was superb

we asked for the chef, and he visited with us

unlike some previous reviewers, our service was perfect

Limited menu with imaginative foods. I wish the menu items weren't paired in such an awkward way.
Service is spotty but sometimes excellent

We stayed at the lodge this weekend and ate there for 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts. Although the service was at times spotty, it was done by such well meaning and charming waitresses that the minor errors were easily ignored. If we considered the food, well, really, what mistakes?!? The food is absolutely fantastic! We tried the walleye cake (signature dish), heirloom radish salad and duck confit ravioli as appetizers, the shrimp and scallop pasta, buffalo short ribs, soft shell crabs and cioppino as main courses. The walleye cakes were so good my husband ordered it the second evening. We did the wine pairings, and it was a bargain to get the perfect glass of wine with each dish! The desserts all sounded great but we tried the fruit cobbler with a lemon buttermilk ice cream, the butterscotch ice cream, and the chocolate cake. All were delicious but the buttermilk lemon ice cream was so amazing that we ordered the cobbler the second evening just to taste it again. Unfortunately, they served it with vanilla ice cream that time, and although it was really good, I sort of had my heart set on the the original so it was disappointing.
The chef does a fantastic job as does Laurie who pairs the wines. The wait staff does need a little more training, but c'mon, we're in the north woods! Where else can you eat such fantastic meals?!?
The views of the lake are beautiful, and it is so peaceful to sit on the deck drinking a glass of wine and drinking in nature in all its beauty. There were no bugs this weekend, so we either just got lucky or they spray around the main building. When we hiked on the paths there were quite a few mosquitoes so if you go for a hike, spray first.
We stayed in cabin 12, and it is perfect for 2 people, with accommodations for 4. There's a trundle bed in the living room that could work for 2 people, and the bedroom has a king size bed. It is very private except that it faces the low wake zone for boaters so everyone slows down as they pass. Not a problem unless you're feeling a bit misanthropic. Which we weren't so it was fun talking to people as they passed while we sat on the deck. There is also a porch that would be more private. While we were there, we saw bald eagles swooping down and soaring over us. They had a baby that was just learning the ropes. It was cool. There were 2 loons just off our dock, which was maybe 20 feet from the front door of the cabin. There happened to be quite a few caterpillars this weekend so I suspect in the not too distant future there will be an amazing number of butterflies. The cabin was bug free (except 1 spider) and, unfortunately wi-fi free as well. There was wi-fi in the main building.
All of the staff were so accommodating and charming. It was fun to watch them interact with other guests. They obviously love their jobs and do them well.

WAY TOO BED!! Thefood was outstanding, but the service and management left a lot to be desired. We had wine with each couse and waitress forgot to serve one wine and they asked us to leave our table because they had another party waiting for it. REALLY NICE!! We had spent over $400 and it was very embarassing to us with our guests. They really do not care about local people, just the tourists!!
