The Archer House Hotel was in business long before Jesse James and his inept idiots tried to rob the First National Bank in Northfield, Minnesota - and it's been in business long after that wannabe thief was run out of town by enraged citizens. On the lower level of the Inn is a lively and cheery eatery that seems to have the best long standing record for top quality food and drink in this town that defeated Jesse James. Yep, Jesse was a loser, but you'll be a winner when you have a meal here. The wide walkway leading to the main entrance received a new "gateway" a few years ago that really helps to disclose "the best secret in Northfield". The walkway also leads directly to the scenic walkway alongside the Cannon River. The chefs always use the best ingredients, everything is prepared to your order, the drink selection is admirable, and the abundant customers can testify to that. In good weather the patio is a great place to wait. Try 'THE TAVERN" when you are doing the art trail in Northfield, or biking around town. It's only 40 miles south of the Twin Cities, just 7 miles from Interstate 35. You won't find it until you find "THE ARCHER HOUSE", and go down to the river walk - and there it is!

The Tavern is part of the Archer House in Northfield. We have friends who live in Dundas, and we like to go to the Tavern to eat. We have been there twice for breakfast, and twice for dinner.
This is the first review I have written for the Tavern. It is hidden away in the basement, and if you enter from the north side, you have to enter through a small and low door. There is a waiting room that looks like it may have been some sort of a cellar at one time. It has a low curved brick ceiling. It is brightly lit and painted so it is not at all claustrophobic. Although we have had to wait only one time.
We went on St. Patricks Day as we had heard they had a wonderful Irish Dinner, and it lived up to our friends recomendation. We were seated almost immediatly. Our waitress (waitperson?) was prompt, friendly and had lots of good information. We each enjoyed a Finnigans Ale while we waited for our meal. We did lack imagination and all ordered the Irish Dinner, corned beef, cabbage, red potatoes, soda bred and a cup of Irish Stew.
The atmosphere was warm and friendly. It was maybe 15 minutes before our appitizer, the cup of Irish Stew arrived. The stew was warm, friendly comfort food. Wonderful chunks of potato, beef, thick gravey and onion. I do like things to have a bit more spice so I added pepper to mine. Yet it was very tasty without, and much better with.
Shortly our Waitress appeared with help with our meals. The red potatos were firm and tasty, the soda bread was firm and had rasins in it, the cabbage was cooked and quite different from the massive chunk of boiled cabbage you normally get. The corned beef was very tender and flavorful. A surprise was it was served with a very tasty white sauce on it.
After we completed our meal, we had no room for desert! Which was a disappointment. Even though the desert menu was short, it sounded very good.

All in all, we enjoyed our meal. We will go back again, and would recommend it to anyone.

As a Northfield resident, The Tavern is a go to Restaurant. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the food is EXCELLENT. I have never had a bad meal! They have an expansive menu full of tons of options for whatever you may be hungry for. The "tavern potatoes" are the best! Very cool atmosphere in the unique historical "Archer House" building in the heart of downtown. Try coming in the summer when you can sit out on the patio overlooking the river walk!

The best thing about the Tavern is the breakfast. There's nothing fancy or really original about it, but the food is reliably good and the prices are great. The nice atmosphere makes this a better choice than Bernie's in Faribault and clearly the best option in town. Lunch and dinner aren't as great, but are still OK.
