For the price of a small diner you can get a fantastic fresh breakfast at the Tavern. Be prepared for a wait, since this is a hotspot for locals in the area. Definitely worth the wait! I usually order the breakfast croissant which is always hot. Service can be hit or miss. I would recommend the breakfast option over lunch.

Interesting place in the basement of the hotel by the river. Used to be a speak-easy and they have a spiral staircase to get up to the hotel. The tavern has small old timey booths in the main area and if you have longer legs they have several other rooms. The food was surprisingly good and reading the menu they have an interesting past. The Thai salad was well presented and they laid out the peppers out nicely on the plate to create an eye catching design. We were lucky to get a ½ price app deal and the quesadilla was very good. My daughter loved her grilled cheese and the fries were well above average. If we are in Northfield again I would recommend coming here to eat.

Found this place by complete accident.
Started on the first floor in the Archer House,in the "Cafe".
Wound our way through what seemed like a Labyrinth of Hallways,
to an Elevator,to another series of twists and turns,
and ended up in the Tavern Restaurant.
Had the Lasagna, my Wife had a Patty Melt,
Both were impressive,will go again.
They had a Patio,we should have dined out overlooking the River.....
Next time.

The steamed mussels are great, and the start of every meal we have at this great restaurant! The guy who complained about flies must have been eating outside on a rainy day, because there are a lot of good things to follow the mussels, including Walleye!

Interesting little place in the basement of an old building. Low ceilings and they have a passthrough to a small patio area. It was nice to be able to have an outdoor table - its in a well protected area. The menu is limited and a little bit rustic. Our server was lovely and wonderfully genuine - but, had no idea how to serve wine. There were some distractions such as having the cheque brought to the table before the appetizer course was even over and the occasional piece of flatware that needed be run thru the dishwasher again. Interesting variation on local color, I'm sure. The floors are quite irregular with more than one up and down - watch your footing. All in all, a nice family visit, pretty comfortable surroundings, basic midwestern fare - and hey... it was Monday... half-price wine night - 'twas OK.
