Just about everything on my trip to Big Stone Lake for the South Dakota Walleye Opener went wrong... EXCEPT for my stay at the Econo-Lodge in Ortonville... They bent over backwards to make my trip bearable. First, I didn't get in until almost 2am... the manager still got up to check me with a big friendly smile and greeting. She got me a room on first floor that was immaculate. Had no problem with the pet policy... extra $10 for the dog -- lots of floor space for him to sleep. Room heater worked great... I generally like it cool, but when I came back in the afternoon sopping wet, I cranked the heat up for a while, and the room immediately warmed up. The manager was extremely helpful with resolving some of my other problems, like finding someone who could cut off the padlock on my ATV that had frozen shut. The room had two beds (very comfortable), a microwave, a larger than normal (for a motel) refrigerator. I didn't turn the TV on, but it looked nice. The desk was just perfect for me to lay out maps, and do some other planning on. The room was quiet... right after I arrived, a large group returned from a local bar... kinda noisy when I was in the hallway... but in my room, couldn't hear a thing. I fish Big Stone Lake once or twice a year... I will definitely stay at the Econo-Lodge on future trips.
