Stayed in a school house suite. Very roomy, clean and cozy. Hot tub a plus after a day of riding. Staff was very helpful. Great location for access to bike trails. Sandwich shop and IGA near by for groceries. Caseys in town for gas. We toured local caves and a Amish community and bakery in Harmony. Orchard near by with home made baked goods. So much to see in area. Stayed in Preston, biked to Lanesboro and Whalen. Didn't get to see half of local sites. Many shops in area. Good place to purchase gifts. Locals are friendly and helpful. Great pizza at Gil B's in Lanesboro. Stop by tourist info near Casey's . A must do again and again.

We stayed at the newly renovated Suite 311-Detention Hall--the room was spacious, clean and very nice. Even though all the other suites were booked, you wouldn't know it b/c it was so quiet. This was our first time in the area for biking and we would definitely choose this place again. The convenience store was really nice to have right on sight for a quick snack or to grab a bottle of water. The staff was also very friendly and helpful.

Second year for us in the Biker's Cabin. We have not stayed in the motel rooms or "suites". Understand that this place is all about location for biking. Cabin is small (more than two adults would be uncomfortably tight) but decently equipped. Perfectly located for Root River and Harmony-Preston trail riding. Staff always friendly and helpful. No wifi in cabin, but signal in office/breakfast room is strong and speedy. Continental breakfast is adequate. Locally made treats were appreciated. Weekday rate for cabin is ok, but weekend rate is higher than it should be for size and amenities. Preston has what you need for a short stay - small grocery, convenience stores with firewood (for fire pit outside cabin) and a few restaurants. A 10 minute car ride to Harmony offers more dining options. Come in with expectations of basic accommodations and you won't be disappointed. It's no frills lodging, but we'll be back next year.

couldn't believe TV didn't even have a movie channel at that price. It was the only motel in town with rooms to get on the bike trail. At trailhead you used to be able to ride right up into the rooms. These accomodations for your bike were sketchy at best.

Room Tip: we were there for the trails.

I stayed here for 2 nights in May while in the area for a bike race. A great location on the bike trail and my room was clean, but the rooms are not updated and little soundproofing between rooms. Breakfast selection was limited, with bagels and donuts served still in the packaging from the grocery store. The ice provided was a ziploc bag with a limit of 1/room/day. The hot tub room is nice, but hard to get to from the motel building, especially if it's been raining. I would stay here again, but only at a much lower room rate.

We bike the Root River trails every summer, and always choose The Trailhead Inn in Preston as our base. Located directly on the trail in Preston, this motel is made for bicyclists. Rooms are large enough to pull bikes in overnight, keeping them safe from the elements. There is a large deck with tables/chairs/ umbrellas and porch swings running the full length of the motel, making it a prime spot to sit out and enjoy breakfast or a happy hour on a nice day. Town is two blocks away. The inn is about 10 years old, built of cheap materials, and is starting to show its age--the paper thin walls allow TV sound through; the door to Room 8 does not fit squarely, which will be a problem in mosquito season; the caulk on the bathroom sink is coming off; the tub has blemishes. The convenient location and very reasonable room rates trump these things, which don't matter much when you're biking. Still, I hope management invests in maintenance and upgrades to keep this the #1 inn for bicyclists.

Room Tip: Room numbers don't make sense. Choose room 6 to be on the end, or room 3 to be next to the servi...

Located right on the Root River bike trail in the heart of Bluff Country and on the edge of Preston, the inn offers year round accommodation for visitors to the area. Less expensive than the fancier and possibly more popular B&B's over in Lanesboro (8 miles away), I don't think any of them could compete with the spacious king bed jacuzzi room at the Trailhead. Although it was February, we enjoyed hanging out on the deck right outside the room, taking in the fresh air and drinking a toast to a weekend get away only 2 hours from Minneapolis (thanks to a surprise bottle of champagne from my sister which was picked up and delivered by Traci, the owner, in between her kid's sporting activities). We had some great walks and many Amish buggy spottings on the road to Harmony, enjoyed the supper club on the bluff overlooking Preston, and the wi fi in the room works great, so we didn't even turn on the tv, and caught up on a few more episodes of that zombie tv show that I said I'd never watch....
