We wanted a special hotel and location. We enjoyed our stay and the location. Very centrally located and walking accessibility to the downtown area.

“Best in Red Wing, and we've been to most”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2014

For an idea of how I rate:
1=Horrible with no return planned ever
2=Not the worst, but wouldn't plan a return trip
3=Average, take it or leave it, wouldn't care if we went back or not
4=Memorable and worth a return trip, but missing something that puts it over the top
5=Memorable and excited about a return trip to try more, has food we've never had and want more of

What an awesome experience. This restaurant has landed in our top 10, and we absolutely can't wait to go back.

When you go in, it immediately feels like a finer-dining restaurant. Beautiful decor, matted tablecloths, only seating for how many are in your party (two of us, and they had set the table with only two chairs, nice touch). Expansive wine list, appropriate flatware and settings, dim lighting, it had it all. The server was polite and professional, giving great descriptions of the food and updating us with times between plates.

We started with wine and the "pork" starter, which was a crusted pork with popcorn ice cream and apples. The minute the plate hit our table we knew this food was game on - the presentation was great, and we ate it in record time.

Next came the Lobster Bisque, which was the soup of the day. I felt like Jerry on Seinfeld, scarfing it down as if I'd never had a soup like it - it was incredible.

For the main courses we had the bone-in strip with fried potatoes (which was more like a hashbrown patty), and the butterfish, served on a fennel bulb in more lobster bisque (butter) and blood oranges. We both almost died when this food entered our mouths. They were perfect. There wasn't a thing we would change on either dish. It'll be hard to try other things because we want to have these again.

We finished with the lava cake, which again, was amazing. Just enough liquor in each component of the cake that you could taste it, but it didn't overpower and take away from the sweet ingredients. Major thumbs up.

Humongous props to the chef and this restaurant. You guys did an amazing job, and we're gonna be back (hopefully sooner than later). This place is a must.

“Special ocassions merit special dining.”

Hadn't been to the Port in over 10 years. We decided to reserve a table for two on Valentine's Day 2014. Reservations here are a good idea, on Valentine's Day essential. We could not get a table before 8:30PM even though calling 10 days in advance. If you are driving here, street parking nearby is next to impossible. There is a parking ramp attached to the St. James Hotel and even that was pretty full. The good thing is that you don't need to go outside from your car to the restaurant, but unless you know this place well, you may have trouble finding The Port from the parking ramp. We saw a few people lost inside. The Port is down in the basement, and the walls are exposed stone walls, nice décor though. We arrived 30 minutes early and sat at the ornate antique bar (looks original). I had a Hendriks gin martini, very, very good. We were seated 15 minutes early. The dining room we were in (there are several rooms) had antique framed photos of steamboats, hence the name "port". Our waiter Andrew, though quite young was really knowledgeable of the menu and wines. He did a great job serving several tables and never left us wanting at ours. We did order the Valentine's Day Dinner, which was a 5 course meal: appetizer, salad, soup, entrée, and dessert. Two hours of exquisite dining and service. We both had the Pheasant entrée which was excellent, and I must say the Lobster Bisque Soup served in very uniquely shaped bowls was about the best I ever had. All courses were excellent! The portions were not large, but just right and we left feeling extremely satisfied. This is really the best place in Red Wing to dine and imbibe in alcohols.

“Early Valentine's Day dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014

Really nice surprise to have the date night specials. And half price bottles of wine were unexpected bonus too.
We went to The Port the day before Valentine's Day to beat the rush. We both had unique and tasty starters and entrees, and the dessert was outstanding!
Michelle was very knowledgeable and provided us wonderful service. We will definitely be back soon!

“Great food and service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2014

Went out to eat with my wife. We don't eat at expensive places very often, so the waitress had to help us navigate the menu. Our Waygu short ribs and butterfish dinner and salads were excellent. What a wonderful, clean atmosphere. We would definitely go again, especially with the online coupons they have as well as 15% coupon available at the Red Wing Chamber across the street.
