Owner description: Built in 1927, the Chateau was one of the most elaborate theatres built in Rochester in the early 1900s. The exterior sunburst design marquee is lit with 636 light bulbs. Its unique French Village decor includes interior balconies and turrets and, on the ceiling, stars in the night sky. Refurbished in 1994, this elegant old theatre now houses a Barnes and Noble Bookstore and Starbucks Cafe.

“Very nice theater”
Reviewed 5 June 2013

Movies star on time, elevated seating, food and wine...you can have usual movie fare plus a selection of entree type of food. Convenient location for people at mayo. Clean bathrooms. Good family environment.

“Great Theater!”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

This was a very nice theater. The seats are huge! There is a bar if you want to have a drink before your movie. I did not get anything from the snack bar, but it seemed very typical. We were there on a Friday night and spent less than $20 so it was a good value for me!

“Pretty Cool Place!”
Reviewed 8 December 2012

Now a Barnes & Noble... It has really cool architecture and a nice atmosphere. It would definitely the best bookstore I have ever seen. I recommend a visit if you are a patient at mayo.

“Beautiful, Historic Theater”
Reviewed 14 October 2012

I visited here one evening recently while staying in Rochester. Since it was nighttime, the theater marquee was lit up beautifully outside. The theater fronts a plaza with a very pretty fountain. Inside the theater, I was amazed at the decorative walls and ceilings; my information sheet noted that this was the best example of "atmospheric theater." The architecture is art deco and was built in 1927. The theater now houses a Barnes and Noble Book Store. On the second floor is a castle motif with balconies, turrets, windows, etc. built to resemble a 14th century French castle or chateau. The ceiling is a beautiful dark blue and is the original ceiling. The constellations of the stars used to be projected through the "sky" here. The theater presented plays, concerts, operas, silent and talking movies, as well as vaudeville. It would be wonderful to attend a show here if it was still an operating theater, but since I love book stores, I am glad that it is being used well. I would highly recommend a visit here. The building inside and out is lovely and historical and you can also browse all the books while there as well as visit a Starbucks cafe upstairs.
