The Mayowood property is on a hidden driveway heading southwest from Rochester/Apache Mall. In the summer it is its own pretty space for a picnic in the backyard. The grounds are being renovated as is the beautiful staircase to the front door and the inside. It is a historical site you want to share with visitors, especially those interested in the Mayo Brothers and their impact on the Rochester area. There are hiking trails under huge, old trees along a stream that feeds into a small dam. The property is under the management of the Olmsted County Historical Center and tours can be arranged through them. A Tour bus can be taken from downtown to visit the home (as part of a City Trolley Tour) in the summer months. Parking can be tight.

A beautiful mansion owned by the founding Doctors of Mayo Clinic. Fascinating tour during the holidays if you are able to make it. If you are in the area, register with the Olmsted County Historical Society in October for a holiday tour. You'll see the house decorated by local businesses along with the house set up as if you were a visitor during the holiday.

The history is fascinating and hearing about how the Mayo family planned some modern amenities such as electricity generated by a dam nearby and an elevator. The house is aging but beautiful after decades of being lived in along with tours.
Well worth a visit.

I understand that a summer visit is also interesting as the grounds are nicely maintained. I have not been able to make a summer tour.

The home is under renovation but a very informative guide gave us a great tour. We had read a lot about the Mayo brothers and the home and property was beautiful. So interesting to see the home go this brilliant family.

Although the trolley delivered us to the mansion a bit late and picked us up before it was over, we still enjoyed the time we had there. While the mansion is under required renovation, it does not detract from the wonder of the story. I admit to being a bit put off by the constant reference to the "wiles of the ladies" to get what they wanted. I have no doubt that there may well have been much of that at the time, but it was a bit over the top . . .

I look forward to returning when the renovation is complete.
