“A Unique View”
Review of Quadriga

Quadriga
Reviewed 23 March 2010

On a sunny day under the blue sky of Minnesota, this is an awesome sight that draws your eye towards the dome of the state capitol building. While visible at ground level, I think this unique artifact is best viewed up close. A truly close view can only be had by getting access to the outer dome of the capitol building via a tour. Such tours are offered but you need to check the schedule inside the capitol building to find out when.

This work is inspired by a romantic view of what grand ancient Roman artwork may have looked like. It is part of many of the efforts to invoke images of the ancient Roman Republic that may be found throughout the Minnesota Capitol complex. The quadriga is a creation of two men - Daniel French and Edward Potter. The statuary group is made from a steel core covered by cooper plates with a final covering of gold-leaf applied on the exterior surface to give it the unique bright shine that draws your eye to it from a distance. The formal name of the Minnesota Quadriga is "Progress of the State". Each horse represents one of the four elements of classic nature.

During the mid-90's the group was removed from the top dome area of the building for renovation and repair for sometime. One rumor has it that an over zealous visitor on a private tour stood on part of the statute and damaged it, forcing the repair to happen. This story has not been formally confirmed if I recall right. This is Minnesota's third state capitol building by the way and this site was finished around 1906. Cass Gilbert is the architect credited with the design of the building itself.
