Came with a group of friends and sat in the bar area, prompt friendly service. Great Guacamole served in a traditional stone bowl. We ordered soft tacos, both kinds were very good. Would like to come back some time for dinner!

We had lunch on a Sunday and had a reservation for 9. It took a long time to get our drink order but the food came fairly fast after we ordered. The chicken tacos and enchiladas were very fresh and healthy tasting. The guacamole was delicious.

We stopped in to Barrio for a pregame dinner and sat outside. Lovely views across the street at Mears Park. The service and food were excellent. We ordered a flight of tequila and shared as a family along with the fish tacos and guacamole and chips. Great happy hour menu. We went on a Monday night and the outside tables were full by 5:30pm. A very short walk to CHS Field Stadium.

OK, I have to put it out there upfront: we're Texans and salsa runs through our veins. But our relocated child tells us to stick to Chipotle for Twin Cities Mexican, so we've always skipped during out visits. But on this night, we're tired and thirsty after a long hot day of hiking. A cold margarita sounded great, but perhaps something a little lighter than typical bar food. So we tried out nearby Lowertown Barrio.

First, the drinks. The margaritas, although a little pricey, are made correctly with fresh juices, rather than drink mixes and are quite good. They are all served on the rocks; we did not see any frozen options.

Next the menu. Our first impression was, hey, they seem to know their chilies and to use them. No pickled jalapenos here. And, even better, they know what posole, sopes, and elote are! This is no mediocre Midwestern "Mexican" joint. While there are also lunch and happy hour menus, the dinner menu is basically made up of small plates: a few appetizers, soups and salads, some shareable small plates, and single serve tacos plus one enchilada and one tamal.

We know we're not in Texas when the chips and salsa are complimentary, but this $3 item is accompanied by 3 salsas, all of which are quite good (although somewhat technicolored) and the habanero one is even hotter than the one I make. The ceviche is refreshing and reminds us of the Gulf Coast, while the delicious crab empanada actually feels more Southern, as the crab is encompassed in masa, almost hush puppy style, rather than the more typical pastry.

Next we turned to the single items. My companions' pork belly taco was the hands down winner and my child said the chicken tamale and pork carnitas tacos were good as well. In contrast, my chicken taco was good, but a little boring. Note: all tacos are served on corn tortillas, in true Mexican style, and there is not a flour tortilla in sight. For us, that's a good thing.

So, now, the reason for the 4 stars versus 5: First of all, service is scattered. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and...forgot to turn in part of our order (he apologized profusely). Also, the food is delivered item by item as it comes up, so the spacing can turn out rather odd (I got my taco before the empanada and long before my companions' orders). Next, the "enchilada and tamal" portion of the menu is misleading. I would love to see the restaurant expand these offerings to include some of those wonderful meats and vegetables beyond chicken. Finally, and I admit this is a Texan gripe, a $5-$6 dollar single taco should be not be served on a commercially prepared tortilla (used for the chips as well). This place understands masa and fresh tortillas would really elevate this promising menu.

Barrio is welcome find for those looking for some good tequila drinks and overall tasty food.
