We couldn't be happier with our trip to KI and in particular our stay at Sea a Dragon Lodge. The accommodation was just amazing and our host looked after every last detail. The meals were fantastic and took the stress away for us, we were able to just relax and enjoy. We commend Steve for how lovely he made our holiday. We will definitely be going back to sea dragon lodge!!!

We heard about Kangaroo Island, from my mate in Adelaide. He said "Go down to KI, your family will love it". Now what I imagined was a subdued kangaroo themed tourist attraction, with a bunch of kangaroos and themed rides, etc, etc. I was so very wrong.

Kangaroo Island is wild country. Twice the size of Singapore. You cannot possibly see all of it in 3 or 4 days. The sights are spectacular. The wildlife, amazing. And the experience can be as exciting as you want it to be. Family friendly or a little adventurous and dangerous.

This brings me to our accommodation. The Sea Dragon Lodge. Before I even begin to tell you about this amazing slice of paradise, I have to tell you about Steve, the owner and caretaker. Steve is a wonderful chap, who can make anyone feel right at home, the moment he shakes your hand. He's got a great sense of humour, extensive knowledge of the island and a keen interest in white wines. And we had a few...

The lodge is situated 700 meters from the front gate, which you open yourselves. It was warm and cozy, when arrived, as Steve had started the fireplace in advance. The rooms are beautiful, with gorgeous wooden flooring. An amazing balcony, which would have been ideal during warmer months. A fully equipped kitchen, which you could use, if you have the lodge to yourselves or with family and friends. I must say, there was a lot of kitchen activities while we were there. Steve is an amazing cook. His fried rice was sublime. Trust me, this man's menu is very VERY exotic. From Moroccan Lamb to even Malaysian Chicken curry!

You must remember, the closest restaurant is 26km away (Penneshaw Hotel) at dinner time, and about 15km away (Dudley's), for lunch. So prepared, food wise. Either have Steve cook a delicious dinner or have something you could whip up. I do not suggest going out at night.

The whole lodge has a rustic homely feeling. And it's situated, what seems like the end of the world. You'd be lucky if there were more that 10 people in a 25 km radius. The view from the balcony is spectacular. The compound is green and interesting. Sheep and flowers. There is so much to do, even without getting into the car and exploring the rest of the island. Kangaroos, echidnas, possum and chickens:) The kids loved feeding them (the chickens) every morning. Steve taught my daughter carry a hen. It's an art form.

As I write this, I almost feel sad, because I know the Sea Dragon Lodge will eventually not be that little secret I want it to be. Our time there was magical. I must add though, the most important ingredient to the Sea Dragon is Steve Lane. Great company and a very very good sport! Unassuming, but highly Indiana Jones, at heart. The dinner on our last night, with his wife Gale, and daughter, was very memorable. And highly entertaining. Spectacular holiday.

Steve, we will be back. And I will join you for another, at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

First timers to Kangaroo Island, if you don't mind a short trip on unmade roads, the views and accommodation are a real treat.
Spacious and sparkling with all mod cons are here to enjoy.Steve (owner) was most welcoming and any request was handled efficiently including home baked bread!.
Great advice from him about sights and places of interest.

I first came across Sea Dragon Lodge on Trip Advisor and what a good recommendation it turned out to be. I was looking for an alternative to the most expensive accommodation and luckily did not have to look far. The comments on Trip Advisor seemed like they were almost too good to be true, but I now know from personal experience that they are justified.

Steve and Gail have created a great combination of good quality food and accommodation, and, most importantly, overlay them with their own personal touches and experiences of KI. The term 'lodge' is absolutely appropriate, for at the end of the day you share a drink on the terrace and have dinner around the common table. Steve is the cook and does a great job, sourcing local produce, some of which he catches himself (a very good fisherman), combined with some of the best local wines.

The picturesque location at Pink Bay, on the South Esatern tip of KI, is remote from many of the touted major attractions of the island to the West and North. Howeverr, this observation ignores the great local attarctions which many visitors to KI may not experience. The lighthouse at Cape Willoughby and its historic tour, the walk around the cliffs to distant bays, swimming in Pink Bay itself (a lovely little beach with a sandy base gently extending to the ocean) - all of these things make a chillout day at The Lodge very enjoyable. There is very little traffic around so just walk on the roads! .

But the benefits of a great location and accommodation can be wasted if mine hosts do not complement these attributes. Here Steve and Gail are outstanding, giving of themselves and their experiences, and sharing meals with you as if they had known you for years. It is a rare quality to be able to host guests and make them feel relaxed and welcome. They give of their knowledge of the island, its history and beauty around the table at night and also in personal guided tours. Steve is happy to be your tour guide (there is a cost involved as you would expect but very reasonable) and he drove our group of 4 across the island to the North and West, giving great local colour to the major tourist locations. This can be for as little as one day although we did share 2 days with Steve as our guide which we think is about the right balance.

If you take a day to chill you should have lunch at Dudley Estate, which is a few kilometres down the road. Great food, and surprisingly very good cabernets and rose. The view from the deck is extraordinary. For you golfers there is a little driving range to try and we spent some worthwhile time honing our accuracy trying to land on the small green from 130-40 metres away. We enjoyed is so much we went back!

We stayed for 6 nights - longer than most - and we came away with a great view of the island and of the lodge. We went with friends - see Ken G's report - and I note he emphasised the wildness and the opportunity to get up close to nature. Not being Australian, that obviously appealed to him - it is perhaps less of a striking impression for us who are more used to it, but is obviously an added bonus for those from foreign climes.

I am waxing lyrical but in this case it is worth it. Stay at Sea Dragon Lodge! I note there is now also self-contained accommodation for those who prefer that but it was not then available to us.

This was my first trip to KI and the sea dragon lodge was the best palce for us to stay. We wanted somewhere away from the main tourist areas and the east coast was it. We found It was very easy to unwind. Steve made us very welcome and steared us to all the sights on the island. The accommodation was great. The secluded beach was fantastic, we share a fire, some good wine and good company around the fire one night. We had a meal prepared for us one evening and it was very good, we were not wanting for anything else after the meal, Well done Steve. George and Tracie

This was our first trip to K.I. and the Lodge was the perfect place to spend a couple of days unwinding. Organizing the accommodation was a breeze and Steve was always very prompt in responding to my emails. The Lodge is in a great spot with a great view and it's own beach. The rooms and beds are very comfortable and the wood fire gave a great ambiance. We'd spent the previous day travelling all over the island, which is huge, so our stay at the Lodge was a nice way to give the car a rest. We walked to the nearby lighthouse and went on a very informative tour. The Lodge is on an unsealed road, however our little 2 wheel drive coped quite well. Make sure if you are renting a car that driving on unsealed roads is allowed. Overall, a great break.

A great way to see a little or a lot of Kangaroo Island. Our first trip to K.I. was spent alternating between Steve driving/guiding us to the sights of the North and south coasts and days relaxing in or near the lodge. Our one day fishing had us all landing some squid (which Steve cooked up for us that evening!) and a nice haul of 16 whiting (which gave us a couple of delicious meals).
Steve has a great manner and is a relaxed but informative guide. The lodge is very comfortable and secluded and it was great having the whole place to ourselves but the soon to be completed villas will be equally good. The bird show is a must.
Definitely try the fishing day but take some warm clothes and a spray jacket!

Room Tip: If travelling as a family do like we did and take the "whole" lodge.
