We stayed at Surfside for a romantic vacation, and I have to say that I could have not been more impressed. Everything was perfect. The front desk staff was flawless and very efficient. The room was clean, and the perfect size for the 2 of us (Lower Unit), and the Jacuzzi overlooking the lake was spectacular. The spa was amazing. I had the same therapist for my massage, and she also instructed yoga, shes great at both! The small cafe above the spa is superb! The food is the perfect accompaniment to a relaxing morning at the spa, please tell the Chef that they do a wonderful job, and we will definitely be back. We had dinner at the grille, and our server was very courteous and helpful on both nights. The food was very good as well. HIGHLY recommend the scallops! The coho was alittle overpriced, but all of the bakery is good. The tall blonde manager was probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. We WILL be back. Thank you all so much!

Room Tip: Middle units seem to have the best view.

We stayed in a 2 bd/2 bath unit for 6 nights starting June 1st. We usually stay at Larsmont Cottages so were a bit apprehensive about trying somewhere new. We were pleasantly surprised. We checked in at Surfside and checkin was efficient and Nathan was very friendly. Our reservation was exactly as discussed - no pet, no smoking unit 16A. This is a middle unit and we thought we might have a lesser view than an end unit, but that was not the case.

The main floor bedroom was huge with a king size bed, chair, loveseat and had an attached bathroom with shower (heated floors in the bathrooms). Another door in the bathroom opened to the hall. Bathrobes were provided and there was ample towels and amenities for a 6 night stay. There was a walk in closet in this bedroom, and an additional closet in the hall. The kitchen had everything we needed other than a blender would have been nice. There was a deck off the dining area where it was very warm in the morning due to the sun and we were able to have coffee/breakfast on the deck most mornings. The units do not have central air, but there is a wall mounted quiet air conditioner in 4 areas. We did have some problems with the unit in the main bedroom, so went upstairs to sleep the last couple of nights. There is also a window in the main bedroom that does not have a blind, so we found we were waking up too early as we like it dark to sleep. As it is so high up, the only option would be to install remote control blinds. On the 2nd floor, there is a sitting area that overlooks the living room and 2 comfy chairs, along with a desk area. The 2nd floor bathroom also has a shower. There is no bathtub in the 2 bd/2 bath unit.

Our neighbors beside us and below us seemed to change every 1-3 days but we did not hear a sound from the other units. At Larsmont Cottages in a comparable unit, you can actually hear conversations from the unit above you.

We visited the pool/hot tub once and the area is very nice, but take shoes with you as the pebbly surface on the floor is coming off. Very nice changing/shower rooms.

The firepit is located on the parking lot side of the units and there was lots of firewood and logs to sit on. We used the firepit once at lunchtime for hotdogs and several times in the evening.

We also visited the cafe once for breakfast and the food and service were very good. The cafe was open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Their menu indicated they serve afternoon tea (sandwiches, beverages, dessert) and it sounded quite nice for an afternoon treat.

The grounds were well maintained, with a laundry building on site for guest use. There were also bikes, games, DVD's available. We were told that we could not use the pool or other amenities that are located at Bluefin Bay.

A nice feature was that guests could sign up for free activities offered at Bluefin Bay. When we were there, there was kayaking, rockpicking hike, photography hike and hikes to various waterfalls etc. We just had to drive to Bluefin Bay, which is a mile down Hwy 61, and the activities person drove us in a van to the site. We signed up for the rockpicking and the photography hike and both were great.

Our unit was very very clean, nicely decorated, and we had a great stay. Every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. We will definitely visit this resort again.

Room Tip: Not sure if there is a bad room here, but we did attend an open house in Unit 17A, and we were told...

We stayed at Surfside with our 3 kids over Memorial day weekend. Despite the unseasonal weather, we had a wonderful time.
We stayed in 12A, a 2 bedroom place.

Pros:
-The townhouses are perfectly clean, well designed, well decorated. They don't have that musty smell you have in cabins and definitely don't have that moosehead decor.
-Location is wonderful; right on the water with huge floor to ceiling windows. You can hear the waves crashing all night long!
-There is a full kitchen with everything you need; full oven, microwave, blender, toaster, coffee machine etc.
-Amenities are fine: there are some bikes available, an indoor pool, spa, DVD rentals.
-You share amenities with bluefin bay (except for the pool)
-Small campfire lit every night and s'mores packets available
-Friendly service

Cons:
-FOOD! The small cafe is not open many days. The other options are the restaurant at Bluefin which is atrocious.
-No outdoor pool to use
-Have to go to bluefin to use tennis courts, extra bikes
-No daily cleaning service. You can request housekeeping if you'd like. On the up side, there are plenty of towels/sheets etc

Tips:
-If you plan to cook, bring EVERYTHING. i.e. butter, condiments (except salt/pepper)
-There is a gas station very close by to get perishables (milk, eggs etc)
-Eat at the Rustic Inn cafe near Two Harbors. A little slow but great food and pie.

Spent 3 nights in a two bedroom unit. The design of the unit made you feel you were outside in the sunshine by the lake! The sound of the waves on the rocky beach and the views of the stars made the nights very relaxing.
Surfside met and exceded our expectations.

We have visited Surfside 4 times in the last four years and have not been disappointed yet. The ambiance of the Master Suite is wonderful. The decor makes it look brand new each time we arrive. Our rooms have always been spotlessly clean and the staff are all very kind and helpful. The grounds are also neat and clean. There is a small kitchen with refrigerator, microwave and sink with enough dishes and silverware for two people. We brought our own breakfast and lunch which we ate sitting on our patio watching the lake and the birds. I can't say enough about the whirlpool and fireplace! Sitting around a campfire which a staff person builds for us in the evening is mesmerizing. We will be back - again and again and again!

Room Tip: The Master Suite, which is on the lower level (and one flight of stairs down), is perfect for two pe...

We stayed three nights here with a spring special that they offered. It was pure luxury to us. We stayed in the Master Suite which is on the lower level of the complex. You have to take a full flight of stairs down to get to the unit so it is definitely not handicap accessible. We faced the lake and stepping outside onto the patio there is a small incline to go down to the rocky shoreline. We were there when the wind was strong so the sound of the waves was always present and very soothing even though we had to keep the windows closed because it was cold. Our unit had a wonderful king bed that was very comfortable. The bathroom was large with a double head shower. There were plenty of towels which was good as you have to call for your room to be cleaned as they respect your privacy. The room was large with two rocking chairs and a very small table. It would have been nice to have some foot rests to use while reading or watching TV but we used our cooler for that. Also if you choose to eat in your room the little table is way to small to do that so you have to hold your plates on your lap. They do have a small kitchen area with a few dishes which was a nice feature only it was just hard to eat without a table. The TV was a flat screen and they have Direct TV service with plenty of channels. There is an air tub which we loved and used every day. It is much nicer than the average Jacuzzi in most rooms as the thing really bubbles up. There are plenty of windows that look over the lake. The gas fireplace was a welcome for us as it was very cold up there. Only problem is it goes off every hour and you have to go and turn it back on. The only concern I had was one day someone was cleaning the unit above us and it was very loud. We were fortunate that there were not many people there this weekend and no one above us. That would have been noisy with walking above our heads. The pool, spa and sauna were great. Perfect temperature on all of them.
We will go back but only during a non busy season. I think renting one of the larger units with a kitchen would be helpful as the restaurants are scarce and the ones there are expensive. But this is a beautiful setting that we truly enjoyed.

Room Tip: You can hear overhead walking so renting the larger units are better.

Wow! This place was really something. I stayed here on a weekend trip away with my husband. We decided to pamper ourselves and just relax in our room after a day of skiing. The room was gorgeous! Everything looked practically brand-new. Even more gorgeous was the view- we woke up to the most beautiful sunrise over Lake Superior!
