“LOVE THIS RESORT!”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

I'm from Thunder Bay Ontario and I attended my friends wedding in Oct of 2012. It was so peaceful listening to the waves with the window open and the décor is beautiful! We had a bonfire and cooked s'mores and met a lot of nice Americans. We had evening swims in the pool and there wasn't anyone there but our group so it's like we had it all to ourselves which was nice. The wedding reception itself was fun and the food from their kitchen was delicious! Their wedding photos also turned out amazing thanks to the many many different beautiful nature backdops. In the morning we ordered breakfast and it was delicious and hot! The pancakes for my friends daughter was in the shape of a Mickey Mouse head!! lol The trails and skating rink right there where we were staying. We then went back for a weekend with a bunch of folks and again had a blast! We're going to be back in the beginning of Dec! SO EXCITED!

Very happy with all amenities but I thought the room was overpriced for the condo we had. The Jaccuzzi is really just a bathtub so dont expect a Las-Vegas style Jaccuzzi. The view and property were spottlessly clean and the Food at Bluefin Grill was superb! Great Chef on Friday night for sure. All the help were 100% professional and it was an awesome, romantic experience. We will go back, very satisfied.

Room Tip: Ground floor, on lake!

We visited here to spend time up north and we thought it would be somewhat luxurious. Not so much. I'm pretty sure we got put in the oldest rooms in the place with some disgusting 80's carpet and all of the smells that brings. We also had our fire alarms go off every morning. We didn't have a fireplace or anything that was emitting smoke, so that was fun. I would never go here again. Stay in Duluth and pay the same price for a NICE hotel. Or save your money and go to a less expensive place.

This was our third visit in the past 12 months. All units are slightly different and there are a variety of floor plans, but we have found our favorite! We like the quality of linens and well-equipped kitchens, the supply of firewood and ever-changing view of Lake Superior.

My husband and I have stayed at Bluefin Bay twice in the last 2 years - first staying in a one bedroom condo and most recently in a studio with jacuzzi. First, don't be fooled by the terminology on their site or other booking sites - the jacuzzi in many cases is just an average sized bathtub with some jets, situated in a cramped bathroom. Bluefin has done a better job of spelling this out on their site, but I still don't think they should be referring to it as a jacuzzi in this particular type of room configuration. The type of furnishings/updates each condo/studio has seems to be a crap-shoot. During our first stay the condo was nice, but not modern. During our second stay the bathroom had been updated but nothing else was new. Neither was super clean with cobwebs in the windows and really dirty light switch panels. I know that sounds OCD, but you have to touch the light switches all the time in a hotel room, and it's kind of nasty when they are super grimy.

The biggest negative to the studio room was the bed. I didn't expect much from a sofa bed, but I certainly didn't expect to pay $180/night to sleep on an air mattress that we had to blow up ourselves! We could have camped in our tent with our own air mattress for free! It was incredibly uncomfortable, neither of us slept well, and it left us exhausted the entire weekend. Not my idea of North Shore R&R. Our studio also smelled like old, sour bacon grease the entire time. We left the windows open all day on Saturday while we hiked, it was extremely windy, and the smell still didn't go away. I've heard better things about Surfside and we'll be staying there if we go back next year.

Room Tip: Studio rooms with sofa beds have AIR MATTRESSES. Get a room with a real bed.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent stay. We apologize that you felt the Studio room style description was not accurate. We try to avoid misunderstandings by including detailed descriptions of each room style on our website. Our site describes the Jacuzzis in our studio units as “single Jacuzzi in a full bath,” and our sofa beds as “double size sofa sleeper with either air or high density foam mattress.” We also include floor plans showing the exact room layout.

The inflatable sofa bed mattress in your room was an “air dream” by Flexsteel’s commercial division, and includes an inflatable chamber inside a conventional sofa bed mattress to add extra comfort. Until recently these were the most comfortable sofa beds we could find. However, we discovered a better sofa bed manufactured by American Leather on a visit to the Crate and Barrel store in Edina three years ago. These are of a completely new design and have memory foam mattresses. We tested and found that our guests preferred them so we began converting to them immediately. We now have air dream mattresses left in only two of our studios, which are scheduled for replacement this fall. We apologize that you did not get placed in a Studio with one of these new beds, and also for the cleaning problems you found when you arrived.

Picked Bluefin for a mini Honeymoon! Wow. It was just perfect! I had stayed a Bluefin years ago for ski trips, but this trip was without snow! We stayed Oct 1st thru the 3rd, the fall leaves were great. The view is indescribable and the condo was very cozy! The temps were in a range where we could have the door open to the deck so we could hear the waves crashing on the rocks all night. The beds are very comfortable, the fireplace is great, and the cleanliness was impeccable. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Room Tip: We stayed in 63A. Very modern!

We stayed at the Bluefin Bay on Lake Superior Sept. 27 - 30. What an amazing location right on the big lake. Our room was 64A and I would say it is probably one of the best on the property. Walk out to the lake and beautiful sunrise from the living room window. Fireplace was really nice on cool mornings and evenings. I roasted marshmallows in the room. You can get free s'more packets from guest services. The room had everything we needed and more. We would definitely go back and stay there again. My husband and son hiked Oberg Mt. and to Agnes Lake which were alive with the colors of Fall. We drove the Maple Leaf tour and it was gorgeous. The colors inland were almost at their peak while along the shore was a little behind. Pizza from Coho Cafe was great and dinner from the Bluefin Grill delivered to our room one evening was great too. Great stay!

Room Tip: It looked like rooms 1-9 looked directly at the sunrise.
