We stayed at the Northern Rail Traincar Inn on Nov.10, 2013 after viewing the lighting of the Split Rock Lighthouse on the annual tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald. Both were first time experiences for our family, both were tremendous and memorable. Clean, cozy but spacious, comfortable and just 3 miles from Two Harbors, it's décor was delightful. Lots of extra touches like a nightlight in the bathroom, free DVD, book, magazine, and board game rentals. 2 deer were grazing outside of our boxcar! We will definitely by back. Jackie, St. Michael, MN.

Room Tip: All unrented rooms were OPEN to walk through and compare - easy to choose for one's next visit.

We stayed here at the end of September 2013. If your looking for something different, this is the place to visit. Very clean rooms and friendly staff. Also enjoyed the free breakfast. We will definitely stay here again. Close to multiple state parks along north shore.

First of all we had the Queen Conductor Suite - this gives us the whole traincar - it was very quiet! We stayed 2 nights and wanted the ability to stretch out - so this gave us a living room separate from the bedroom. Also a fridge & microwave. Everything was very clean. The decor was sort of African animal (I really liked it). There were games, books and movies in the lobby that you could borrow. They also have several menus for local dining, that was nice to see before you go what was there and prices. We had no problems with wi-fi in our room. The owners are very kind and helpful. In hindsight I wished we had spent more time here, the location was really good for what we wanted to do. As others have mentioned the breakfast is ok, nothing spectacular. I too thought it would be cool if they served local items, maybe they could work something out to do some of that. They do offer snack items very inexpensively.

Room Tip: We had the Queen Conductor Suite

So, one hobo says to another, “Man, I am tired of riding the rails. I’d love it if someone would build a hotel out of old train cars and put it in the woods. I would so stay there!”
Well, Mr. hobo, welcome to the Northern Railcar Inn and Suites.
The hotel uses old train cars as rooms and suites. A suite consists of a full train car. Two rooms make up railcars.
We had a room. You would think that half of a train car would be small, but nope. It seemed like any other hotel room. The only main difference inside the room is that it’s more narrow than a “regular” hotel room.
But, you will not notice. It’s a neat concept. It’s a boutique type set-up, since there are 10 cars. So, you know the total number of rooms is limited.
Northern Railcar is located on 160 acres of woodlands, about a 2-minute drive north of Duluth on the famous North Shore scenic route.
Staying at the hotel fit into our trip theme – with the Northlands sites we were taking in.
Our room had a golfer’s theme. The floor lamp had golf clubs as part of the lamp stand. The wall décor had golf pictures. Each room has its own decoration theme.
The hotel’s interior had a train theme to it (duh!). It was interesting walking in the hallway and seeing the side of the rail car as part of the wall.
The lobby is an actual building connected the trains. The complimentary continental breakfast is hosted here. The lobby has quite a few train models scattered about. Families enjoyed their breakfast each day. Kids were encouraged to play with toys, puzzles, etc., in a nook in the lobby.
The only thing missing was a caboose. The owner/manager told us that they have one they can buy. But, it’s expensive to transport it. So, for now, they have other priorities, but do plan to bring it aboard sometime in the future.

My husband and I stayed here on an anniversary trip up North in August. The outside looked so interesting, so we decided to stay one night. It was clean and quiet--and I was worried that it would be loud, but that was never a problem. Another reviewer deemed it: "Unfulfilled Potential." That really says it all. I expected the hotel room to look like the inside of a train car. (Like the boss's traincar in "Hell On Wheels," if anyone watches that show.) Or even with "train" motif of some sort. (Old photos of trains maybe? A few interesting pics ARE out in hallway.) But inside, it was really just a hotel room. Still, again, I must say it was clean and quiet. We had a good sleep. The morning buffet was good--fresh fruit and yogurt and bagels/muffins/toast. Still, I wish the train motif had been carried inside the room. I'm glad we stayed once. It was a fun adventure.
