Hiked a portion around Gooseberry River and then did the 5 mile day hike around Split Rock River. Although it was misting most of the hike, the canopy kept me from getting too wet. The trail is very well marked and includes some great trail spurs, which are worth the extra steps. Awesome views of the river falls, the valley, and Lake Superior. I really came to appreciate all the work to build and maintain the trail. Can't wait to go back and explore other parts!

Park at the wayside off Hwy 61 just south of Split Rock river (47.182137,-91.409115). Then take the "spur trail" (you will actually just be walking next to the highway) staying on the West shoulder of Hwy 61. Don't go shooting out of the parking lot up the hill unless you want a really cool but 5-mile long hike around the river gorge. Anyway, you will soon be turning up the hill to a breathtaking lookout and great photo spot. Its the lookout point on this map: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/maps/state_parks/spk00266_summer.pdf. Note its a short hike though not necessarily easy - for how high you get so fast - its about as easy as it gets. Descent Lake Superior beach downstream from the wayside. The state park proper is a fee to park; however, the wayside is DOT and has no charge.

We hiked several sections of the trail on different days. including Split Rock, Gooseberry Falls, Oberg Mountain, and Devils Track. All were excellent. I had no idea that hiking trails with views like this existed in the midwest. There are beautiful views everywhere and too many cascades and falls to count. Very quiet with few other hikers during midweek. Trails considered moderate can range from fairly easy to pretty challenging depending on weather. After a rain, parts of the trail can be very slick and the footing on some of the climbs and descents was a bit uncertain. Get a set of maps--while the trail itself is well marked with blue paint on trees, there are spots where there is a fork or split and no signs at all to let you know which is the trail you are taking.

A friend and I backpacked an out-and-back from July 24-27th, starting just outside of Grand Marais at the Pincushion Mtn. parking lot, hiking out and stopping just shy of the lake walk before turning back. Unfortunately the weather was miserable (cold and rainy) the whole time. Except for the soupy conditions and a few recently downed trees, the trail was in great shape. I will say that this segment of the trail is extremely intense, involving hundreds of feet in elevation change near Pincushion Mtn. Fortunately most of the very steep inclines have wooden steps. The campsites were in good condition with rudimentary benches, a firepit, a cleared pad (or pads) and a backwoods latrine. I especially loved the freedom of being able to stay at any site that was unoccupied at no charge. I would definitely recommend the SHT to a day hiker or a backpacker.

Loved the split-rock and other trails on the superior hiking trail. They were challenging with beautiful views and maintained, yet not too populated. Thank you to the volunteers who maintain the trail.
