“Great resort and awesome management!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2012

This is the 3rd time I have been at Canary Beach Resort and I never leave disappointed! They continue to make improvements to the resort and add new fun things for kids! This is the first time that I have been there in the winter and the lake is just as much fun frozen for the kids (and us adults!!)! We had a blast. We stayed in a new huge cabin with all of our family around 20 people and it was not too crowded and very comfortable. The beds were amazing and we all slept sound as can be. The management and staff are always pleasant to work with and very helpful. My husband even ripped his pants and the lovely gal who is always working and running around let me borrow her needle and thread to fix them up! We are already planning our next trip there in the summer!!

We stayed in the campground, so I cannot comment on the cabin rentals at this resort.

Pros: The swim beach was one of the best we've ever used in the Midwest. The water was clean and clear. The beach was nice and sandy. They had many things for kids to do in the water such as little boats they could ride in and pedal with their hands, a huge inflated slide and a huge water trampoline. The kids had an absolute blast in the water. The playground had nice equipment which was in good condition. There were many other things to do such as horseshoes, volleyball and shuffleboard. They even provided sand toys for the kids. Every evening they had a hayride with actual hay. The hayride was also lengthy in duration and scenic. Much better than most hayrides. The grounds were clean. We had a nice view of the lake from our campsite. The owners were pleasant and friendly. They gave us directions to different places we visited. They squeezed us in with short notice on a busy Labor Day weekend when our previous campground flooded.

Cons: There are two public showerhouse facilities. One is newer and is located closer to the lake inside a larger building. This one was really nice. However, this was a one-stall unisex facility, and was therefore usually occupied. The main showerhouse was horrible. It needs a new roof and new siding. I hoped the inside would be better, but it wasn't. The showers and faucets dripped and ran when turned off, there were curtains instead of doors on the toilet stalls and the whole place was in major disrepair. The second problem we had was nighttime noise. The majority of campsites are seasonal. Therefore, everyone knows everyone else and they all gathered every night around a common fire pit. We're talking 30 people drinking, being loud, singing and playing the guitar until midnight or later every night. There was another group in a different section using Roman candles. Finally, there was only one garbage dumpster that we could find and this was quite a distance from our campsite.

Even though we enjoyed the facilities, the nighttime noise and the fact that they take very few short-term campers means that we probably won't stay here again.

Christine O, General Manager at Canary Beach Resort, responded to this review, 26 March 2013
Thank you for taking your time with this review and the positive comments! Since we are a small family business, I remember your family well and personally helped with your telephone reservation and check-in/check-out. Our greatest asset at Canary Beach Resort is our beach, over 900 feet of sandy shoreline just perfect for relaxing or making a sandcastle! We do try our best to have activities for every age group which include: Lake Waterpark, playground, hayrides, shuffleboard, sand volleyball, horseshoes, dock fishing, lodge/gameroom and more!

I do apologize that your vacation was not 100% enjoyable. Our main shower house ‘Bird Bath’ is an older building; however, it is clean and functional. We check it several times a day, even more on the weekends/holidays. The majority of our campsites are seasonal. Usually, our overnight sites are reserved for those who are friends of our cabin guests or our seasonal guests.

My husband and I typically do night rounds at 11:15pm, where we converse with our guests and remind them of our quiet hours. We did not see nor hear any Roman Candles, as we are a Firework and Pet free resort. I did see some Tiki Torches, which we also use at times when we have movie nights on the beach.

We would be honored to be your host again! Even though our overnight sites are limited, we do have ten lakefront cabins, six of which are brand new and available year round!

If you have any questions, just call or email me!

Our family enjoyed staying at the resort. We stayed in a cabin/house. Very nice-plenty of supplies to make meals etc. in the cabin to use. Nice to have a cabin with two bathrooms. It was cooler while there so air conditioning wasn't a big problem however the air conditioner is in the kitchen- so that might be a consideration. Nice flat screened TV but located in one of the bedrooms-vs the family/sitting area but we fished most of the time so didn't bother us. Hopefully we can return-peaceful, fun water toys, the water tramp is great as well-but just be aware it's in a little bit of deeper water. Very well run resort!

Our family stayed in a cabin at the resort last June 2010. The kids really enjoyed the water slide, paddle boats, and beach. The staff was friendly and the grounds and cabins were well maintained. The evening hay rides were a nice extra. I would definitely recommend for a relaxing get-a-way.
