“Superb location and friendly staff”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

The location slap bang on the middle of the coastal path cannot be beaten and the staff are super friendly so well recommended. Food is good pub grub - nothing fancy but good portions (homity pie was tasty in particular). Couple of minor gripes - wanted an earlier breakfast but didn't realise only opened at 8.30 so we had to wait a little though our fault for not checking the night before I suppose. Also checking out took a while to sort the bill though all in all would recommend a stay here for the great staff and wonderful location.

Do not expect gourmet food, but you will have good food. This is a pub for those who love walking and the wonderful scenery offered by North Cornwall and the view here is fabulous. Service was prompt at the bar with a decent wine list. Having settled in to the wonderful relaxing view and seen fresh crab was offered we went for the crab salad. Delicious, fresh basic dining. Loved it!

The location is unquestionably spectacular, especially if you can get Room 6 with a large private balcony overlooking the bay.

The staff are really helpful and friendly. The bar was noticeably busy and, possibly under the influence of the staff, had a lovely warm atmosphere. The food was above average for standard pub fare.

So, why not a 5* review, you may well ask. The answer is all to do with the accommodation. Great balcony, the unusual and welcome presence these days of a bath in our en-suite bathroom but no soap or shower gel. Sadly, the greatest letdown is the music. I am sure from a quick look around the bar that much of their business is South West Coast Path related. The one thing we walkers do not appreciate is load, thudding bass music late into the night. Sound-proofing is non-existant.

We stayed on a Saturday night. Perhaps a midweek stay would be quieter. If so, and if they remembered to put some toiletries in the bathroom, the rating would be swiftly raised to the highest level.

So, a recommended overnight stop with a serious caveat.

Over the last 5 years we have frequented the Coombe Barton Inn regularly. My wife and I have a holiday home on Hentervene Holiday Park, Upper Crackington which is located only a couple of miles up the hill from the Inn. We have never commented on our experience but feel we have to compliment the quality of food served, happy staff and most importantly the excellent rapore they have with their customers. The range of beers, cider and wines are excellent. We noticed that some people complain about the length of service it takes especially during the height of the tourist season but at least the staff communicate with the diners re timings. We have experienced some delays but do not mind given the beautiful location, scenery and attentive staff. See you all next month AGAIN!!!

Beautiful views from this pub/hotel almost on the beach. Friendly staff, reasonable pub grub if you stick to the 'catch of the day' - we had the sea bass which was delicious. Room was comfortable with a separate bathroom with a bath! which we really appreciated after walking the coast path. Room 5 has no view but it didn't bother us as we had had views all day and just wanted to sleep! Only problem was the live band on Saturday night which played till midnight - sounded like it was next door - no soundproofing at all. If we had known, we wouldn't have stayed a 2nd night.

4 of us have just had an amazing weekend at this inn. It could not have been better. Amazing location and really, really friendly staff, who went out of their way with us. Food was delicious, pub food. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

We had seen some bad reviews of this place so there was a bit of a worry to driving over 5 hrs to spend a weekend here. We shouldn't have worried the staff were very friendly including a chat about the hotel, serving times, that they would be available to help all night etc. Although some of the selections of drinks was limited (I like a selection of Whiskies) the selection of local bear was good. There is a good selection of dinners and special options for the day. We tried both from the menu and specials. These both turned up in a reasonable time and were presented/tasted well.

Room Tip: Remember there is a pet option if you want to go with your dog :)
