“Great campground!!!!”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

We have camped at Prairie Island now for the last 3 year. We find it friendly, both seasonal and daily users, quiet (sure at times people will party hardy but isn't that what camping is about enjoying life) most of the time, extremely friendly staff and affordable. This is not a deluxe campground, but it offers everything that is needed for an enjoyable camping experience. It is close to town and shopping, great restaurants and fast food joints, great sight seeing and all around good times, Would like to give Russ and his staff a "good job" for the campground.

This is in response to WisconsinRanger . We are permanent campers at Prairie Island since 2005. Yes we have a garden hose hooked up to the pump, yes the water pressure does get low at times. We don't mind, after all we are "camping". I agree some of the sites are not well designed especially for the "bigger rigs" and the non electrical end has creative sites. The docks are safe as seen by the numerous people who use them for fishing and swimming. There is plenty of room to tie a boat. I take offense to the comment regarding the "permanent site users -well used and abused" The majority of the campers are new, in fact I know of several that are less than 3 years old, including mine. The "perms" open their sites up to fellow campers for fires, music and fun. We do karokae, have hawaiian weekend, Christmas in July, Halloween, Golf cart parade on July 4 th with candy for the kids. I guess if your idea of fun is sitting in the RV - then don't come to PI. If you want to meet new people, enjoy the river and have lots of room for the kids, then stop out to PI and say Hi.

Room Tip: Bring insect repellent,,,, it is on the river.

My wife and I were passing through on a cross country trip and had stopped to see some friends in town for a few days and found this campground on their recommendation. Upon arriving, we entered the hut that serves as the office and were surprised to find a small convenience store with various camping odds and ends including breakfast foods, smores supplies, and a toy section for children. The manager was incredibly friendly and went off on several amusing tangents when we inquired about the area. He then gave us a list of open sites and told us we were free to choose whichever on the list suited us, and we managed to find a site with a gorgeous view of the river and plenty of shade. The shower facility was well maintained and had hot water, which was nice for a change. The next morning we stopped at the office again, hoping to ask the manager for his recommendations on some of the local wineries and attractions. Unfortunately he was not in. Instead it was a college aged young man, and with that age group you never know what you're going to get. But not only was he incredibly friendly, he was quite knowledgable about the regions wineries and suggested this relatively new one in Trempalau, WI called El Marro Vinyards that we had never heard of. It was FANTASTIC! He even called to get us directions (as we didn't have a GPS) and gave us several tips on their wines and places to eat out that evening. We had only planned to be in town for a few days, but ended up staying an entire week. I highly recommend this campground to anyone planning on staying in the Winona area.

Room Tip: We loved spot #6 as it had a little dock beneath it so we could fish in the morning.

Pulled in, looked and then promptly left. This city run campground has seen its better days. It is obvious funds are lacking. The non-water/electric tenting sites have mature shade trees with plenty of grass, if you can determine which site is which. They are not clearly designated. Do not drive your large RV into this area due to the low hanging tree limbs. We're RVers and the water/electric RV sites are nothing to write home about. For those with big rigs like us most sites will be difficult to back into particularly those right along the Mississippi. Every power service box was leaning and about to tip over. There was one hydrant for every 8 or so campsites with as many garden hoses hooked up to it. There was no water pressure. There are some permanent site users that lend that "well used and abused" look to the campground. Bathroom facilities? Yah, right! You are feet from the Mississippi but just about every walkway to the piers were under water and the piers themselves I wouldn't trust to step onto. You will drive through an industrialized area to get to the campground so don't figure on any real ambiance. The website pictures don't do it justice and were probably taken during its peak. This place was depressing.

Just spent a very long, relaxing weekend @ PIC and loved it! Friendly campers and clean, well kept sites. We tent, but still stay in the electric sites that most trailers and motor homes stay at. We had an amazing view of the river because we booked a site near the water. There was plenty of space to spread out, as each site is nicely sized. Plenty of trees to shade us and the sandy beach area was just over the hill where we were able to keep our boat each night. So we could be in the water in one minute and at our site relaxing the next. For the family, couple or older folks, PIC offers something for everyone. Plenty of safe walking areas, play areas for the kids, dogs are allowed and there are hundreds of miles of fishing for the enthusiast of it as we are. Also cool was the trip up the river where we got to use the lock system (something i had never done) and we were close enough to town to get ice and groceries easily..... This may have become my new 2nd home to get away to.......A+ to PIC

  • Liked — close to water, convenient for boat owners

We've been staying at Prairie Island Campground for just about 20 years - and the Campground is always making efforts to improve on what it has to offer. I think our kids love it the best - with all the activities for kids - the scavenger hunts, weekend night movies, and other fun adventures. There's a playground, basketball, miniature golf and boat rental too. It's a safe place for kids to have fun and being right on the river gives us easy access to fishing too. We've held many a family reunion here - it's just an awesome camping community and just minutes away from Winona and other recreational opportunites too. Russ and rest go out of their way to make your stay a memorable one - check it out for yourself!!
