Owner description: The Biloxi Lighthouse was erected in 1848 and was one of the first cast-iron lighthouses in the South. It is the city's signature landmark and has become a post-Katrina symbol of the city's resolve and resilience. The light was civilian operated from 1848 to 1939, and is notable for its several female lightkeepers, including Maria Younghans, who tended the light for 53 years. In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the light's operation. After being declared surplus property in 1968, the Biloxi Lighthouse was deeded to the City of Biloxi, which eventually opened it to public tours. The lighthouse has withstood many storms over the years. Katrina's storm surge enveloped a third of the 64-foot tall lighthouse, and the constant pounding from the water and winds toppled many bricks that lined the interior of the cast iron tower. The storm’s winds also broke many of the windows in the light cupola and destroyed the structure's electrical systemIn March 2010, the city re-opened the lighthouse to public tours after a 14-month, $400,000 restoration that was funded by FEMA and MEMA and completed by Biloxi contractor J.O. Collins.

This cast iron lighthouse (built in 1848) has a fascinating history. It stands as a symbol of survival since it was one of the only structures on the coast to survive Hurricane Katrina. Climb to the top and enjoy incredible views of the Gulf coast. It's right across the street from the Visitor Center in the middle of the main highway. A fun place to visit.

“A beacon!”

A very well kept lighthouse! You can go up in it, and the views are spectacular! Rich with history! It's located right by the Biloxi visitors center, a pier, and of course the ocean! The story of its existence is a true testament to its strength!

“Nice tour”

Very much enjoyed climbing the tower. The tower is short so it doesn't take long to get to the top. It has been beautifully restored. Tour guide was very informative.

We Walked to the light house from the Beau Rivage hotel along the beach and really enjoyed taking pictures of it. I was not aware that a tour was available but will be sure to go early next time to go inside

“Cool and historic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013

You cannot take a tour of this, but it is so very neat and historic as it dates from the Civil War. It is in the middle of the US highway, so just enjoy it from the view and enjoy your visit to the coast.

Good Afternoon Mike,

What time did you visit the lighthouse? The tower is open every morning at 9, 9:15, and 9:30am weather permitting. We don't conduct tours in the rain due to the surfaces directly around the lighthouse being slippery when wet as well as the 62 spiral stairs. We also only conduct the morning tours due to excessive heat in the lantern room in the afternoon. Tickets and additional information can be bought/found inside the Biloxi Visitor's Center across the street.
