“Dreamy idyll in Bay of many Coves”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

My first trip to the South Island, was to the Bay Of Many Coves resort, and I am smitten.
Reaching the resort by small ferry , accompanied by many dolphins , we arrived to a welcome party of the amazing staff form the resort, including a very friendly dog. The rooms and suites are beautifully situated to maximise the view of the bay, and are finished to a very high standard, each one being a little hideaway in itself. Each suite is self contained with kitchen, living area with TV/ DVD player ( you with not likely use ..as you will have too many other delightful distractions), and balcony. There is a café/ bar near the water, and on an upper level the wonderful restaurant is situated. The menu is an artful combination of well known and new dishes prepared in a thrilling new way, and foodies will feel like they have died and gone to food heaven. The wine list is imaginative and will please everyone. To work off the calories, there are some great walking tracks around the property, as well as options for kayaking , sailing , photography or just sitting talking to the pet blue fish who lives close by. A truly special place, thanks to the great staff and insightful management. You will not want to leave.

Room Tip: book early to avoid disappointment

Your stay starts with a scenic 30 minute water taxi ride through the sound to the hotel. The beautiful scenery does not stop with the taxi, the view of mountains, water and gorgeous sunrises from your suite are breath taking. The suites are stepped up the hillside which makes them very private, which allows you to keep your curtains open to enjoy the scenery. Since you are in an area without roads it is a great place to relax, enjoy water sports or hike. You will not be disappointed with food or service at the hotel. Pipa and Nick who manage the Bay of Many Coves will make sure you will enjoy your stay. For those travelers who may be missing their pets there is Merlot, a friendly dog that will entertain you with his antics but also knows his boundaries of where he is allowed to be in the hotel.

We appreciate the recent comments following your stay at the Bay of Many Coves. Indeed our 'road-free' haven is a special place for relaxing and getting into action on and off the water, and we are thrilled that you managed to do that and enjoyed your time with us.
Merlot the mutt is very fortunate to have a beautiful environment and a lot of guests to 'play' and hike with !
It was our pleasure to host you and thank you again, we hope to see you back in the future.

The Bay of Many Coves resort in the Marlborough Sounds is a great get away. The hosts Pip and Nick and all the crew make you feel welcome. Food is stunning and the rooms excellent, comfortable and roomy with stunning views out over the water. Merlot the dog is a great host also. One highlight, among many, are the pet Blue Cod that turn up to the wharf for a feed.

Room Tip: All the rooms have great views so it comes down to your choice.

Our little off the beaten track Lodge is a perfect haven for wildlife - as you found out - including the resident Dog! Our pet blue cod gets a daily treat and entertains the guests of all ages, and for those who head out on a fishing charter, a non-pet is delicious on the plate - pan fried or battered.
It was a pleasure to host you and the Chefs are glad you enjoyed their creative cuisine. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Queen Charlotte Sound and the Bay of Many Coves.

We recently visited the Queen Charlotte Sound and stayed at the Bay of Many Coves. So many positives about this place. Our hosts were lovely and very accommodating. The hotel has paths leading directly from the site to the track and other (much less painful) hikes. They have kayaks available for guest use and the hotel in general is a lovely quiet relaxing place to visit. It was off season so other than a few guests and a million birds, it was easy to focus on relaxing. I also enjoyed the spa services =)

The one warning with this hotel is that you must use a boat to get there unless you have a helicopter at your disposal. The regular service runs during limited hours in the off season and getting transportation after hours is a very expensive proposition.

I would suggest this resort to anyone looking for some quiet time with plenty of leisure activities built in.

Your comments on a mix of leisure and 'chilling-out' is exactly what we love about the Bay of Many Coves - so much or so little to do depending on how much relaxation and action is desired.
Sadly we do not have control over the watertaxi prices or schedules, however we do our best work work with guests on coordinating their timing and boat timing - as there are more limited schedules in winter we use 'on-demand' services which are very flexible (instead of $48pp it is around $90pp) and where we can combine guests onto a trip that is already taking others around the sounds it drops back down to around $45pp. Helicopters, the floatplane and private charters are also a means of arrival, the journey is part of the experience with the stunning scenery of the Sounds.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us at the Bay of Many Coves and thank you for submitting a review and sharing your thoughts.

We stayed for 2 nights and were blessed with excellent weather. The accomodation is spacious and welcoming, extremely well appointed and truly 5 star! Fabulous views of Queen Charlotte Sound. We enjoyed the walking and kayaking very much indeed, also the little pool and hot tub. You are completely isolated here so don't expect any where to buy any groceries! There is a lovely kitchen area and everything you need for self catering but take all your food with you if you intend to eat in your chalet.

Room Tip: Expect steep open paths and steps. Nick and Pip do a tremendous service with their little buggy if y...

Your review is a reminder that the winter in the Marlborough Sounds is as special as the summer, just a little cooler but still temperate and generally calm. We do have kitchenettes in the apartments and we can assist with supplies from the local supermarkets in Picton (who deliver to the Watertaxis and out to us around 3 times per day) or even get food items directly from the Bay of Many Coves Kitchen; however we do find that most people indulge in the cuisine created by our Chefs. It is always nice to have the choice though. We are glad that the experience at the Bay of Many Coves was a positive one for you.Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on the bay, we do appreciate the feedback.

I couldn't recommend the Bay of Many Coves highly enough. My girlfriends and I had lovely, restorative spa treatments under Rochelle's great hands. We ate fab food - the degustation dinner a stand out - and found time in-between to walk, kayak, cruise Queen Charlotte Sound on the Lady Karen, fish, soak in the hot tub and laze about in just stunning surroundings.

All this made possible by our great hosts Pip and Nick and their excellent team who made the experience one to remember. Will be back for certain.

A fine summary of what we witnessed as a special three days shared with good friends. We enjoyed the atmosphere, fun and laughter and we are thrilled that it was memorable for you. Especially the massages, more than two hours per Lady - indulgent, and so you should be - this is a perfect spot for it. We hope to welcome you and yours in the future.

This is such a stunning setting - and the resort is empathetic to its gorgeous environment. I went with a group of five old girlfriends - and we are thoroughly spoilt. We loved the spa treatments - and the food was truly divine. Pip and Nick were very gracious and accommodating hosts - and went out of their way to ensure we had a brilliant time. Highly recommend the Lady Karen - we tried our hand at disc shooting and fishing (we weren't that successful at either but had a lot of fun!). We went in early June and didn't have that much sunshine, but it didn't spoil our time there - the sounds look great in low cloud with lots of moody greys.

Thank you for taking the time to submit your thoughts on your stay with us last month. I don't think the friends were 'old - but definitely long standing! It was a real pleasure to welcome the 6 of you and ensure you made the most of your three nights with us, on and off the water. We hope to have the opportunity to host you in the future, or your friends or family who are visiting the region - and need to escape from Auckland!
