“A secret hideaway”
Reviewed 8 April 2014

Bay of Many Coves was our first stop in New Zealand and we couldn't have asked for a better place to get our feet on the ground. The surroundings are absolutely gorgeous and the environment of the resort is a perfect mix of luxury, peaceful hideaway and casual comfort. We only stayed for two nights, but wished we could have stayed for a week. From GM Pip to the servers and staff, everyone was helpful and friendly, including the playful dog that kept us company as we waited for our boat to leave. And there is so much to do, including taking the water taxi to the various trails and wildlife parks in the area, relaxing at the spa or pool area, exploring the grounds and visiting the glow worms at night. The food and wine are excellent as well. This is definitely a luxury resort and the prices reflect it, but it was well worth it both in quality of the location and quality of service.

We are pleased for the feedback on the 'quality' of your experience with us at the Bay of Many Coves. The first stop from LA to Arthur's Bay - Wow! Thank you for finding our 'secret' hideaway and giving us the chance to welcome you here, we have shared your positive comments with the team, always very much appreciated.

We could have stayed here for weeks. It is probably my favorite place I have ever stayed. There's no question it is expensive, but it was definitely worth the splurge. The location is spectacular, rooms have everything you could want: separate living room/dining/kitchen area, nice bedroom, outside deck with another dining table, and big bathroom, with amazing views from nearly everywhere, nice furniture, and lots of nice added touches (including water bottles, binoculars and flashlights to borrow on your outdoor adventures there). Though this is a luxury resort, the hotel still has a friendly, casual feel--it's certainly not stuffy. Service was uniformly excellent from everyone we encountered, and that was true even months before we got there, thanks to great communications from Pip, the general manager, who quickly emailed responses to all my questions. We actually booked a package (the eco-tour), and everything was pre-arranged for us as promised, down to every last detail--so there was nothing to worry about when we arrived. It is impossible to be bored here; there are numerous hiking tracks (including several on the hotel grounds--one of which is a short night-time hike to an area with a ton of glow worms for a one-of-a-kind experience), boating activities, wine tasting, and so much more to do, all surrounded by brilliant blue waters and green-covered hills. You'll quickly get used to traveling everywhere by water taxi, drinking great local wines, and spending your days outdoors.

Room Tip: I can't imagine any bad rooms here; every one has a spectacular view, and either has its own lit...

Thank you for an extensive review on your recent stay at the Bay of Many Coves in the Queen Charlotte Sound. We are very glad that the special splurge was worthwhile, and yes, our packages are a perfect way to get good value and get all the pieces into place, no hassle and all is included like the excursion, meals and transfers.
It sounds like you loved the beauty of the outdoors in the region and at the Bay itself, we always feel that is so much what the Bay of Many Coves is about - chilling out for those who want a welcome retreat and embracing the many activities on offer for those with more energy!

Oh my how else can you describe a shed on a hill excuse the pun - this is just heavenly and without fault in respect of the chalets, food and service. We have never stayed anywhere where the staff are more attentive to your comfort, it seemed almost invisible beds made read cups washed silently. Pure heaven with stunning views, just 11 chalets sleeping a total of 32 people this is a place to visit.

Room Tip: All rooms have a stunning view of the cove

Our team are very gratified with your feedback and to know that your stay at the Bay of Many Coves was 'right up there' in terms of service, location, scenery and food. The 'shed on a hill' is a cute term for our contemporary apartments individually dotted on the slopes maximising privacy and top views over the charming terrain of 'sunken river valleys' that makes up the Sounds. Thank you for taking the time to review our facility and for the positive comments.

It has been a pleasure to welcome Klaus on more than one occasion from Norway to Marlborough - to enjoy the best of both worlds - the Sounds and the wineries. Thank you for taking the time to share your views on the Bay of Many Coves as a destination in the Sounds and we do look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back; either for a romantic get-away or to continue exploring the wonderful cellar doors, lie by the pool, take on a massage in the day spa, swim in the fresh sea and more!

With very good friends visiting from Melbourne, we wanted to find a destination that would "blow their socks off".

Where to start is the challenge writing this review. From my first contact with their GM, Pip, I was impressed with the friendliness and the high level of service I received. I booked a 2 night package including food and 4 hour cruise on the Lady Karen. OK, I must admit that the price made me "suck air through my teeth", but this was a "one-off", so worth the investment (more on this later).

We drove up to Picton from our home just outside of Christchurch and parked the Jeep in the BOMC car park and walked across to Arrow Water Taxi pier for our 30 minute cruise to the resort. The skipper was friendly and helpful with the bags. Once underway he also gave us a history of the sounds and some humorous stories as well. It was a fun trip up Queen Charlotte Sound. Then as we came into the Bay we catch sight of BOMC Resort. It is situated on a bush covered hillside stretching from the water and up the hill. Whilst not imposing, it certainly looked like a luxury environment.

We were welcomed by "Fern" and escorted to the reception area for a welcome coffee (or drink) where we were warmly welcomed to the resort and told about all the facilities. Whilst this was a happening our bags were taken to our rooms. When we had completed the introduction Fernando walked us to our room. We had chosen a two bedroom unit up the hill. It was quite a walk on a concrete path and it was steep. A golf cart is available to take people to their rooms if required. Once in the room it quickly becomes apparent this is no ordinary accommodation. Our 'unit' was well furnished with 2 bedrooms with their own excellent bathroom facilities. It had a small well equipped kitchen and dining area. The view from all the rooms is out over the bay and is truly breathtaking. Beautiful, magnificent just don't do it.

Now for the food. We had two dinners and two breakfasts included in our package. The food was as good as I have ever eaten. Beautifully presented and great flavours paired with excellent local wines. We even had a burger for lunch which was pretty good as well. The service in the restaurant was outstanding, "Sophie" was delightful, efficient and patiently explained the menu.

We had booked a 4 hour cruise in the package. The "MV Lady Karen", built in 1957 is a beautiful motor launch. Not fast or noisy. Just comfortable and quiet. The skipper, "Gordon" was a genuine "nice guy" with great stories to tell and a wealth of funny ones as well. He cooked a batch of cheese scones for us to enjoy (and we did). We also enjoyed skeet shooting from the stern of the boat and we got to hang a fishing line over the side and catch a blue cod. One was "legal" and we took that back to the resort to cook up as a quick snack (beer batter, yum). The cruise ended too early, but of course then we were back in the the resort which as I have already said makes you forget all the bad stuff going on in the world.

To sum up... BOMC is a wonderful place to experience. The location is just wonderful, the resort is 5 star luxury, the people are outstanding and the cuisine exemplary. So at the beginning of this (long) story, I said this was a one-off trip. It won't be for us, we just have to figure out how we can afford to keep going back.

You have to experience this for yourselves!

Room Tip: If you lack fitness, use the resort golf cart

Thank you, Graeme, for your well detailed prose on your stay recently at the Bay of Many Coves. I was sad we personally just missed meeting however we are thrilled that Sofie, Fern and the rest of the team ensured you enjoyed your two night 'package' stay, along with our 'local partners' Arrow Watertaixs and Gordon on the MV Lady Karen.
The location is indeed idyllic, remote yet accessible, peaceful and well appointed for an 'off the beaten track' type stay, and we were honoured you chose to bring your special guests from Melbourne to visit us as we know you are spoiled for choice in New Zealand.
We are also very glad to hear that you will entertain the idea of a repeat visit, remember we are happy to offer 10% discount to our return guests and rates vary during the seasons - in fact May-September is a delightful time in the Marlborough Sounds too. Thank you again for such a big effort to document the experience and all of the team are grateful that it was a pleasurable one for you.

What a fantastic place this is! We stayed at BOMC for our wedding anniversary with their celebration package. From the moment we arrived, until we left we were made to feel welcome and the staff were fantastic. The food is has got to be some of the best we've ever had. As part of our package we had the degustation dinner. I would highly recommend you try this spectacular experience. Every course was mouth watering good. Make sure you leave room.
Waking up in the beautiful sounds each morning was lovely. We would love to return. Definite 5 stars.

The BOMC is located in the most tranquil setting and in in the most beautiful scenery. Access to the resort is by boat so one has the feeling of total peace and solitude. Everything is perfect and the BOMC is ideal for a relaxing break. The hosts Pip and Nick make you feel so welcome and nothing is too much trouble for them to ensure that you have all that you need. I cannot say any more other than go and try it for yourself.

Room Tip: All rooms (lodges) overlook Queen Charlotte Sound.

What a lovely review, with many thanks. Indeed tranquility and beauty are regularly uttered by guests. We love sharing 'our office' - this little peaceful part of New Zealand where many guests enjoy a break from the road; relaxing &/or exploring the Sounds.
