“Rudeness and mildew pretty much sums it up”
Reviewed 6 April 2010

After speaking with a very rude general manager before I checked in to the hotel, I wasn't sure what to expect from the place. We got in on Friday and were one of maybe 4 cars in the parking lot. The hotel stayed pretty empty throughout the whole weekend and I can see why.

I put the Cabot Lodge Millsaps on Motel 6 level, but without the cheap prices. The lobby was very nice but unfortunately we couldn't stay there the whole time. Every floor except for the lobby smelled like mildew and there were random stains around our room. My friend in another room saw a bug crawl across her bed at one point. Our toilet had some issues...every time you flushed it at least one piece of toilet paper stayed in the bowl, even after we called someone to fix it.

The hotel does have a free happy hour which was great. We took advantage of it on Friday, but then on Saturday we came by at the same time, around 6:15, for a drink. The woman at the bar was on the phone and when we asked her about the happy hour she said we'd "just missed it." The day before it had ended at 7:30 so we went to the front desk and asked what time the happy hour ends. The lady at the front desk said "7:30. Did she tell you it was over?" She rolled her eyes and called over to the bar and told the lady to get off the phone and serve some drinks. We went back to the bar and the lady begrudgingly served us.

The whole impression I got from this place was that nobody cared. Nobody seems to be concerned with whether you ever book another room with them. Any level of rudeness and uncleanliness was acceptable. I could maybe deal with this if the hotel was cheap, but it's not! We obviously won't be back.

We were quoted a discounted price of $99, since I am a Belhaven alumni. Our two rooms were located on the first floor and smelled musty. One toilet did not have a handle to flush with, and we had to report this when we checked in. The bathrooms were small, there were signs of mildew, and the drains in the bathtubs were clogged.

We were there for two nights and the maid never cleaned one room. When we complained, the desk person told us to find the maid and ask her to clean the room. When the maid was told we needed the room cleaned, she said we had left the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door too long, and she could only give us fresh towels. (The sign was not left on the door).

When we went down for breakfast one morning, there were gnats flying around the pastry. My husband told one of the workers about this but nothing was removed. This was very disgusting.

Very disappointing stay.

The staff is very helpful. The guest rooms are spacious, and very clean. The best part of the staying here is the free drinks in the evening, a great way to relax and chat with others. The location is very close to downtown, but still manages to be accessible.

I think the rate ($99+) being charged for these rooms is ridiculous for what you get. The rooms do not come with a microwave or fridge. The bathrooms are so small, one person has problems maneuvering in them. There was also visible bathtub/shower mold in my room. I will never stay here again. I checked out after one night and found a better room at a much better rate.

We stayed at the Cabot Lodge because my mom had an appointment at the Medical Center. (Just around the corner)
Our stay was great.
The lobby looked like a lodge when you went in. It was big, inviting and comfortable. The popcorn was popping and it smelled wonderful!
The guy that checked us in was very friendly. He told us about a really neat place to eat.
Our room was very nice and clean, as was the rest of the hotel. The bed was comfortable. The view was really pretty.
Breakfast was really good, bacon, grits, eggs etc. Again, everything was very neat and clean.
The pool was huge, like hotel swimming pools used to be.
We'll stay there again!

  • Liked — pool
  • Disliked — smoking room (mom's a smoker) smelled like cigs!

This is a grand, old hotel with modern upgrades - flat screen TVs, refrigerator and microwave in the executive rooms. The hotel lobby is magnificent, reminescent of great lodges in our national parks. The staff was polite and helpful. The hotel was full with Hurricane Gustav evacuees - lots of families with children, but it was incredibly quiet and peaceful.

  • Liked — Ambience and service
  • Disliked — Breakfast started too late for those who start work at 7 am. There aren't any restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

The hotel's web site makes you think that it has been renovated but it most certainly has not. All they did was install flat screen tvs in the rooms. They are cheap flat screen tvs but they are flat screens, nontheless. Otherwise, I would be surprised if the owner had spent any money on that hotel in 15 years. The entire building feels and smells musty. The bed linens actually felt wet to me. The a/c units stopped removing moisture from the air years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they traced an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease to this hotel.

The desk staff is totally uninterested in what they are doing. The room was not cheap, either. Unless you need to stay there because of the college or the hospital, then stay somewhere else. It's a creepy hotel and it needs lots of work.
