We were looking for a relaxing pub who served good food. We tried The Soldier Dick for the first time. It started well with pleasant friendly bar staff. We had Sticky Ribs to start. Absolutely delicious and so tender. A good sized portion. Followed up with homemade steak pudding accompanied by chips. We asked for vegetables instead of the mushy peas on the menu which was no trouble for them. The pudding was full of chunks of steak and the suet pastry was light. Proper chips which were obviously freshly made as they were so hot. I had goat's cheese & red onion tart. Again really delicious. After all that we didn't have room for pudding.
We will definitely be going again as i fancy trying the rest of the menu!

Room Tip: On the A6 with a good car park around the back. We didn't stay overnight but the food is excelle...

Today was our third visit to The Soldier Dick for lunch. Initially we called on a week day but have since been twice for Sunday lunch.
The decor and furnishings are casual and comfortable and and the inn appears spotlessly clean and well cared for. Each time we have visited has been a relaxing occasion and we have enjoyed a well cooked meal. The bar and waitressing staff, as front line, are friendly, helpful and efficient.
Today was a Mothers' Day lunch and mums were offered a complimentary glass of fizz. As I don't drink alcohol I swapped the offer for a diet coke. My husband and son had a starter of stilton and mushrooms served on garlic bread and they both sang it's praise. I am a pudding fan so I did not have a starter.
Spoilt for choice they eventually settled for mains of crisp belly pork, celeriac mash and very tasty vegetables enhanced with a cider sauce. Again they reported that the food was beautifuly cooked and served. I had lamb steaks and mash and vegetables. I really enjoyed the latter as they were crisp and full of taste. I asked for 'ordinary' gravy instead of the stated brandy gravy that went with the dish and was not disappointed. It was all so well cooked and presented.
I, alone could manage a dessert, and inulged in a gorgeous Eton Mess. We were too full even to have a coffee and very satisfied we headed home to rest and reflect on the lovely occasion.
Even though the inn was very busy we could not fault our meals and really appreciated the skill of all concerned; from chef, kitchen, waitressing and bar staff. The landlord and landlady can be proud of their staff.
If the standard of the accomodation is as high as the meals I would think it must be a winner.

I live in New Mills but have not been in the Soldier Dick due to it changing hands so often, but tried it tonight on the recommendation of a few people I know. And was surprisingly impressed, firstly I saw the chef who I have know for a good few years and he is very good secondary the pub was very busy which is a good sign from what it was. The food was very nice and a very good selection of real ales all at a very reasonable price. Will certainly be going there again.

Met friends here, for an evening meal and get together, as it was halfway between where they lived in Heywood and where we were staying in the Peak District. I picked it on the off chance and what a good choice I made! Very friendly atmosphere and service, good ales and great home made food. What more could you want. Also it's very easy to find (on A6) and with parking behind. Certainly be using it again when we are in the area.

This has got to be one of the friendliest pubs I have been in for quite some time! It has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, yet it is incredibly relaxed and typical of a nice pub. With an open fireplace in the snug, a central bar, more seating down a few steps, and a wonderful menu, this place has everything that you could want!

We popped in here for some lunch and the menu is wonderful. It has pub classics such as lasagne, fish and chips and pie all intermingled with more unusual items such as a brie stuffed chicken breast and ribs. There is also an ever changing specials and dessert menu.

As an eating establishment this would be perfect for lunchtime or dinner sittings.

The service was excellent, we were left in peace to eat our meals and when it came to paying we were very very impressed! This is a great place, good value, great surroundings and excellent food!

The Soldier Dick is located on the A6 which runs through Furness Vale. There is easy access to the railway station and there is literally a bus stop located outside the front door for t

Absolutely loved this place, warm open fires and great traditional hand pulled ales. The food was outstanding both in terms of quality and presentation. I had the "mixed grill" which I must say would satisfy any large appetite and was only £13.95. Warm, welcoming staff complete the ambience and atmosphere to a tee. Full marks SOLDIER DICK, 10 outta 10 from me!
