Roaring River State Park
Reviewed 1 July 2008

The Emory Melton Inn at Roaring River State Park is a "natural" choice for those looking to escape the busy world. I have stayed at the Inn three times since 2004, and I have not been disappointed with any of my visits.

The rooms have always been clean, the staff friendly and the views spectacular. The lodge's restaurant serves traditional fare in a casual atmosphere -- it's nice not be rushed, especially in a place like Roaring River.

The park itself is great for hiking, fishing, nature and heritage tourism, camping -- of course, those who are expecting that Roaring River is some sort of raging river like the Blackfoot may be disappointed.

My family have been going to Roaring River for years; I was introduced to it by my dad and we brought our daughter up fishing on the lovely little river. We've stayed in both the Inn and the cabins and never had a problem until this last time.

The cabins were recently remodeled. and the changes were only moderately successful, in my opinion. Some of the "improvements" actually made it worse. For instance, the front door was moved to the parking lot side (good), and a much-needed mud room was put in (good) but we lost the lovely porch overlooking the mountains, (bad). The sofabed was replaced by an akwardly placed Murphy bed.

It took 3 trips back to the Inn to get working pass keys. Although we were booked for 5 nights, they kept disabling the keys, and we couldn't get into the cabin. Once we had to make a trip back to the Inn to get working keys at 12:30 at night. It wasn't until I made a huge scene at the front desk that the problem finally was corrected.

The cabin we were in was the dirtiest I've ever seen. Toothpaste splatters on the mirror and wall, food splatters all over the side of the refrigerator. To the Inn staff's credit, they did appear to care and refunded me a night's charges. However, the cleaning staff did not correct the problem while we were there. It wasn't as if they were too busy because only 3 of the 9 cabins were occupied while we were there.

If it weren't for the wonderful fishing, hiking, and scenery, we definitely would not return. But we love this park and are hoping they get their staffing problems fixed before we go back. Otherwise, we may not go back again, after going there for 30 years.

Traveling to the area for a family reunion at the end of July, someone suggested we stay at the lodge in Roaring River State Park. We couldn't find any reviews on-line, but their website seemed OK. The picture of the lobby looked nice, and it was a state park accomodation... couldn't be too bad, right? WRONG!!! I can honestly say this lodge has the worst accomodations I have ever encountered. Upon arrival, we were excited about the state park. Tons of trails... we knew there was fishing... not a ton of people in the area. The lobby was nicely decorated. There was a small gift shop and a restaurant with views that overlooked the hundreds of acres of forest. We checked in and were given the option of paying up front, or waiting til check out. I went ahead and paid upfront to get it out of the way. BIG MISTAKE!!! We were given the keys to our 2 rooms and directed down the stairs. Surprise! Room #1: Stained, grimey carpets... mildew in the bathrooms... a shower that didn't drain... a coffee pot that had dried up coffee caked to the bottom of the pot... light fixtures with burned out lightbulbs... smelled like stale cigarettes and moldy towels. Room #2: To our disbelief, the room hadn't been cleaned after the customers before us left. The sheets and blankets were strewn all over the floor... used towels lying on the bed... garbage cans overflowing with garbage (including leftover food)... and the bathroom was a total mess! We called the front desk and 15 minutes later, the receptionist came down with sheets, towels, and a bottle of ??? Hopefully a disinfectant cleaner. She spent about 10 minutes cleaning the room. Didn't vacuum... didn't scrub anything... didn't put bags in the garbage cans. Had we not already paid for the rooms, we would have left immediately. Instead, we tried to make the best of it (and never took our shoes off)! Yuck.... I had the worst time trying to sleep because if the rooms looked that bad to the naked eye, imagine what kind of parasites and bacteria were in those rooms that we couldn't see!

Other details:
- The restaurant was horrible. Our first night eating at the lodge, it took over an hour for us to receive our food. That was after we waited 25 minutes to order. You would think they were preparing a gourmet meal. No! The kids were served macaroni and cheese out of a box. And unless we wanted to drive 20 minutes into town and eat before 7:00pm, this restaurant was our only option.
- The "roaring river" is not really a roaring river. More like a creek. Not good for fishing. But there is a large lake about 10 minutes up the road. We didn't find that until our last day in the area. Had the front desk told us about the lake, our stay may have been a bit more enjoyable.
- No cell phone service. And the pay phone looked like it hadn't been cleaned/disinfected in 10 years. Also, advertised "free Wi-Fi" was slower than molasses and not worth using.

Something positive: The state park housed a nice fish hatchery.
