The pub is in a beautiful location near Shipley country park which is just perfect for a good walk before or after a visit to this fantastic country pub.

Good choice of ale and lager, really warm welcome and service and dogs are allowed in the main bar and the garden and offered a chew and bowl of water too. I've even had my dog with us for Sunday Lunch in the main bar but if the weather is good, the garden is perfect for them.

Apart from the great service and atmosphere, the best thing about the old black horse is the huge portions of delicious home made food! Anything from steak and ale pie with loads of meat and tasty gravy, lasagne, chicken korma and perfectly cooked steaks to a range of tasty specials including the Mapperley burger challenge. The challenge is immense and not for the faint hearted - massive burger with piles of home made fries, I'd love to have a go but don't think I could eat that much in one sitting!
The food is also great value for money with the majority of the mains under £8 each and if you have any space left there is a range of home made desserts - crumble, sponges, cheesecake (the lemon is my favourite).

The locals are welcoming and it's a great place to spend a Sunday lunch time (carvery) or come in for tea in the evening (food from 6pm). We're all off this evening for tea (3 adults and the dog), but what to choose from the menu, everything is so good!!!

I paid a visit to this lovely country style pub with my other half, after a walk through the close by Shipley Park. They offer a good choice of lagers and fine ales, with a good selection of wines and spirits. They have a good variation of vegetarian food along side the usual offers of a public house, all of which are home made and locally sourced. The home made chips are something else, well worth an extra portion. The landlady and her staff were very welcoming and extremely pleasant and friendly. We really enjoyed our visit to this establishment and will definitely be returning again in the near future.
