“Mostly Amazing”
Reviewed 23 December 2013

My wife booked a weekend at The Elms to celebrate my birthday weekend. The Hotel is beautiful and instantly recognizable as a classic. Marble floors and the scent of delicious food greet you in the lobby. The roaring fireplace was also very welcoming. We arrived in the room and both observed that it didn't feel like a "hotel", but more like a guest room. Dinner at 88 was delicious, drinks in the lounge were good. THEN... we returned to the room, pulled back the covers and found hair from two different people in the sheets and under the pillows. I contacted the front desk and was brought fresh bedding... and had to make the bed myself.

The second day, we booked massages at the spa and planned to spend a good 4-6 hours in the Grotto. I asked the front desk to replace all of our bedding while we were out. The massages were great, but my wife seemed to enjoy hers more. My therapist had gas. Time spend in the grotto was great though. I sweated out the toxins I'd ingested in the lounge the previous night and managed to catch a few cat naps.

We returned to our room and found that housekeeping had simply remade the bed without changing the sheets as requested. The old bedding and comforter were still sitting on the ottoman where I had placed them the previous night and we had no new comforter. Upon request a new (clean) comforter was brought up so we could make our bed (again) before heading to another fabulous dinner at 88 and a fresh round of decent drinks at the lounge.

We slept well, the bed was comfy, the pillows were great, and we were offered 20% off our next stay due to the inconvenience. HOWEVER, it would have been nice to go on vacation, have clean sheets, and someone to make the bed for us. Management was notified but failed to act. Not sure the 20% off a future stay makes up for the problems, but we may give them a second chance since the town and the spa were great.

Room Tip: During the winter, ask for a room on the south side, old buildings let in cold wind!

We did not try the spa but do plan on returning to try that. Warmer weather would have allowed us to see the beautiful outdoor areas. Thankfully we had mapping software on our phone which mad it easy to find.

Room Tip: We were given a handicapped room which was much larger than the other one we visited.

I think The Elms will certainly miss out on people returning again and/or recommending the hotel if visitors do not take advantage of the spa. Although we enjoyed our stay fine, this would be how I would recommend the hotel to friends & family "The hotel has a really neat old style feel. If you are looking for food, I would go elsewhere nearby or bring your own. Except if you're looking for a great burger, head to the Tavern. The noise at night was terrible. Try to stay when events are not going on or request a room as far from the halls as possible. The hotel stay would be like many others except for the Spa. If you are going to go, you have to go to the Spa, otherwise you could probably find an all around better stay somewhere else."

The younger man who helped us on check-in made us feel unwelcome. We arrived later in the evening, so there was not a lot of staff on hand. He acted as though we were interrupting him. He did the bare minimum of getting us checked-in and keys to our room. The Elms would be better off sticking him in a "behind the scenes" position if they kept him hired at all. On other stays we've had elsewhere, simple questions like "What brings you here for your stay?" or "Have you stayed with us before?, make that small little difference in a first impression. It also wouldn't have hurt for him to smile or actually act like he was there to help us instead of us intruding on "his" time. It was very unfortunate that he our first impression of the Elms.
Cannot say enough about the morning staff. They were wonderful. They accurately reviewed our bill with us, made small talk, and treated us the way all of the employees should have treated us.

The room was lovely. We loved the bathroom. The biggest complaint is all of the noise. The 2nd evening during our stay, there was a wedding. We could hear the music and noise in our room. We finally decided at 11:00pm to turn our t.v. on to drowned out the noise. We came for a relaxing get-away and everything proved to provide that, except the noise. It would be nice to have an idea of what "view" the room is providing. We didn't have a terrible view but I would have paid more to have a view that was not 70% ventilation system.

Our waitress for an evening dinner was so nice. She took the time to explain a few questions we had on the menu. She was very knowledgeable and down to earth. The food overall was fine. It was EXTREMELY under seasoned. We ordered steaks for dinner and couldn't even tell that they had salt & pepper on it let alone any other spice. Additionally there was no steak sauce that could have been provided to help.

We loved the feel of the Tavern. We ate a light dinner there on our first evening. The gentleman in the Tavern was very helpful and nice. He definitely gave us a better impression of the Elms after our check-in experience.

Loved the staff! Very accommodating when we asked for a few small tweaks to our food. Once again the food was under seasoned. I ordered the asparagus, poached egg and prosciutto for breakfast. It needed more spices. Even a tad more salt would have helped. My husband ordered the Steak & Eggs, which was WONDERFUL! The Elms burger he had in the Tavern was the best food during our stay.

This spa resort is very well renovated and is the perfect place to escape and not leave the property for a couple of days. the 88 restaurant was very good and consistent for meals and our spa experience was excellent. They have a unique Grotto space for relaxation before your service with a hot tub and sauna and the massage therapists were very skilled and soothing. The room was fully renovated and well appointed. GREAT MATTTRESSES Overall a good visit

Room Tip: Check out the Hall of Waters for a little history. Quick to run into KC for a nice dinner on the Pl...

We drove from Dallas Texas to Missouri to see my mother in a nursing home. Made our donation to the Casino’s of $50.00. Spas clean and exciting rooms’ luxuries. My wife and I had dinner at the 88 loved the food. Like I said we relaxed!...... spa massage very healthy and relaxing! Took the nature walk to relax we shopped downtown to relax bought some Missouri wine and relaxed. Relaxed so much nothing else mattered! I am just saying; It was a very relaxing weekend we needed it!

Beautiful renovation and spectacular service. This is truly a hidden jewel. Stay on the fifth floor and enjoy the club lounge. Take time to walk the property and take in the surroundings. Ask for Julie in the restaurant as she was exceptional. Food was great as was the ambiance.
