My husband and I were there to attend a nearby wedding. We were only at the hotel a short while, but were impressed enough that we want to return to enjoy it more. It was like being in a castle with luxurious amenities!

Room Tip: Mattresses were extremely comfortable. My husband has traveled all over the world and was very impre...

The hotel has been tastefully redone, but the decorating is extremely minimal. King rooms are extremely small but well done for the small space. Best mattresses ever! We did not visit the Spa, but it is beautiful and it seems to be a big focal point of the hotel. However, we did visit the restaurant 88 on Friday evening for dessert - whereby we were told by the hostess we would have to sit in the bar if we were only having dessert! At the time (7pm) there was only 1 couple in the entire restaurant. Not very accommodating. The next day we went back for the breakfast buffet (which was wonderful - best biscuits and gravy I've ever eaten), but more problems with a different hostess - We were told we could not sit upstairs, even though there was plenty of room and the downstairs was loud and packed due to visitors for a wedding. We persisted and were seated upstairs. Food was really great for Sunday Brunch. The Elms needs "hostess training". When you drop $500 for 2 nights, the hostesses need to be at least accommodating unless your request is beyond reasonable. Our waiter (Zane) was absolutely the best! The town itself is like a ghost town - nothing to do and very few shops. Be prepared for your stay to be centered on the hotel only.

Room Tip: Rooms are noisy and furnace extremely loud.

The hotel is great. If you plan on staying on the property there not many better. So much to do on the grounds. With the pool, hot tub, grotto and dinning all in house. Also a couple great wineries close by (Van Teal & Fence Stile). We didn't have any success finding anything else to do in Excelsior Springs but we also stayed for 4 days and got a little stir crazy at the hotel. We loved it and definitely recommend it (spring for the upper floor and spa experience) but maybe don't stay so many days! ;-)

Beautiful facility, great service. The massages were wonderful, the restaurant food delicious and atmosphere comfortable. We were upgraded to the 5th floor where we enjoyed complimentary beer/wine and appetizers in the evening. Lovely. Would love to return!

The hotel ambiance is grand and historic. The staff was super friendly. The room was small, but well furnished and the space well utilized. The spa massage and Grotto was fabulous. Also, we really enjoyed our meal at 88 Restaurant. Perfect weekend trip.

I went for an Art and Soul Retreat .So I did not use any of the better things associated with this Hotel since I was on a very limited budget plus this trip was strictly business . I would however recommend this Hotel for anyone needing a nice and quiet vacation.

My niece decided to organize a last minute girls night at the Elms Hotel & Spa, one day prior to our availability. The property was referred to us by a military couple who attended a Army Reserve Retreat here a few years back and told us that we would be disappointed. We called on Friday evening to make the reservation for check-in on the following day. Reservation availability was limited (party of 3) - the only room left was a parlor suite on the 5th floor with a king bed and pull-out sleeper and due to our booking we did not qualify for any of the spa packages. Evidently, those are limited to bookings of 24 or 48 hours out. I proceeded to inquire on discounts/rates using military or AAA memberships. AAA came in MUCH cheaper so we booked a single night under that rate with no additional charge for the third person. We were bummed out about the non-availability of Spa packages so I asked to be patched into the Spa receptionist to inquire on our options at this point, however she said indicated that noting is available for our time of stay. I didn't give up there...I immediately went on-line and submitted a spa reservation request for ANY 3 services to include salon. My hopes were to be first in the queue to grab a cancellation. Worst case scenario, we agreed that we would checkout the grounds and pay the $55.00 Grotto fee to indulge in those luscious robes, sea salt rose petal scrubs and Jacuzzi baths.

First thing in the morning we received a call from the spa manager and she graciously accommodated us with 3 bath treatments @$45 w/complimentary Grotto access which was a $10 savings! Upon arrival we were very impressed from curbside valet/bell services to a no-wait check-in, to a lovely concierge greeting on the 5th floor. We stayed in corner room #510. It was HUGE, bright and so inviting. We immediately, dropped our bags and took in a beautiful spread of complimentary appetizers a glass of wine (we tipped our concierge $8 for the service). We proceeded to dinner before hitting the Grotto before our spa treatments. Dinner was fabulous (like REALLY fabulous)! I ordered the recommended Sea Bass @$30 and my Mom ordered the Filet @$30. My niece ordered the angel hair pasta dish $15. We were the first reservation at 5 pm and were seated upstairs so we could people watch and observe a wedding party exiting the adjacent church and heading over to the hotel for their reception. It was between white and flowery or stout and tan (A body building contest was also a main event at the Elms). The server was lovely (friendly, nice appearance and helpful) however slow in greeting us. We all circulated to the downstairs restroom and back before we were greeted. She saw that she was seated with 3 people however, only brought water for 2. We did not like the bread, it tasted like soda bread with maybe a herb woven in and the spinach and Caesars salad that we ordered as appetizers were nothing special. I would recommend passing on appetizers if you stay on the 5th floor. All of our dinner portions were xlrg and we didn't end up finishing. From the time we ordered until our food arrived, the table next to us (with another assigned server) was still waiting for their drinks. (a good 15+ minutes). The actual restaurant was empty so I am not sure on why we were slowed down to a fine dining experience. We were not necessarily in a hurry (or else I would have expressed that up front) however, we did find it odd that we were the only two tables in the place We passed on dessert and charged our meal to the room. Total time in the restaurant was 1:38 minutes. By the time we entered the Grotto is was a wreck! I called in the staff to refresh EVERYTHING and check on the Jacuzzi chemicals just to be on the safe side. They ran right in and got it back on track however, I had to go back out and ask about the Steam room (not Steam Shower Room) not working. The maintenance man came in and said it was out of order since last week. Well, the staff was unaware of that and were embarrassed that they could have informed us upon check-in. We quickly exited back into the steam shower room (which is actually better) and proceeded with our rotation. We reported to the relaxation room as required 10 min prior to our treatment only to find ourselves disrupted by a group of birthday girls in celebration mode. Oh well, I was 40 once - they are forgiven! We all took our spa baths (milk & honey for hydration and Juniper for Muscle relaxation). 30 minutes is a bit long to sit in another body of water shriveling up like a prune but hey...who cares, all we had to do was walk out to the elevator (in our robes) and hit our room! We caught wind of a ghost tour at 10:30 pm given by Jay so we jumped at the adventure. It was a neat tell all that backed what we read on-line (we love back-of-the-house experiences) and tipped him $5 for his time. We returned back to our room and turn-down service but only had (1) truffle when we clearly had 3 occupants (Rock, paper, scissors)! We also did not receive the sheets that would be needed for my niece to use the sleeper sofa. We had to call the front desk and request sheets at 11:30pm (we did not tip the delivery boy). We woke to our neighbors (like 4-5 different voices) conducting a full-on conversation, which seem to me like they were actually IN our room. I had to get up and open the curtains to see if we had a balcony they may have wandered over on. Well, that was not the case since it was snowing and no balcony. They agreed to go to breakfast and that was that, I went back to sleep and chalked it up to the ghosts...;). We decided to pack-up and then go eat brunch. Again GREAT food but the service was again SLOW (different server and again friendly, polite). It was a buffet so we could carry on without supervision however we still needed silverware and I NEEDED coffee (since our coffee set-up in the room was missing the condiment station - creamer). Well worth the $18!!!

Check-out and reverse valet was again great and front desk staff very friendly. The only downside of the service is the lack of a concierge on the main level that could be utilized for general information/queries upon check-in. For instance, the web site did not mention that the Elms is pet friendly (we paid for a dog sitter). That a free nightly Ghost Tour was included and that there was a basement European Lap Pool w/Jacuzzi for those who do not want to pay to get into the Grotto. Considering our last minute planning - we truly found a diamond in the rough and are planning to go back this summer so we can lay by the pool, take in a playhouse theatre experience and sit outside at the Wabash BBQ and listen to the music with our pooches!

Room Tip: Any room on the 5th Floor and if you like to meet a Ghost stay in room 500 or 501!
