The hotel is set back from the road, and is pretty old looking. The lobby was clean when I went in to get the keys. First sign of a problem was that they had my reservation wrong. I had reserved a king bed NON smoking, and she tried to give us a smoking room; ended up in a non-smoking room with two beds, so I guess it turned out okay.
We parked (outside entrances, which I actually like), walked up to the second floor (no elevators), opened the door, and had an overwhelming smoke smell hit us in the face. We had planned for that, and sprayed an entire travel size bottle of Febreze, which helped with the odor. The room looked like it was clean, all the lights worked, and had a refrigerator and microwave in it. Bedding and linens looked clean, all good things. Walked by the pool area (outside pool) on the way to the lobby for some ice; looked clean and well maintained. So far, so good.
Then, about an hour later, we look outside, and there are three Fenton police cars in the parking lot. They were there for at least 30 minutes, and then left. My hubby had to finish up a presentation for a meeting he was attending the following morning, and had to use the internet to finish up some pieces. We could NOT get an internet connection in the room. We tried with a laptop, an iPhone, and an iPad, unsuccessfully. We went to the lobby to ask about the internet, and got a lack of concern and caring from the employee(s) there; one lady that checked us in, holding a young baby, and then two other young adults. The responses I got ranged from "it works for us here" to "it must be your device", to "yeah, a couple of the access points are locked out, and we've had problems for a while". If you've had problems for a while, why not get it taken care of? There were 5 or 6 connections available, and we could not connect to the internet using any of them! We could connect, but they wouldn't connect out to the internet. We ended up using our iPad cellular data to tether to the laptop so that hubby could finish up his presentation; we used so much data that we had to purchase more to finish. We were tempted to ask for a $20 refund in the morning to pay for all of the cell data that we had to use, but decided it wasn't worth it. So, keep in mind, the internet may NOT be available to you if you stay here.
Went to get ready for bed, and noticed that our feet were filthy; apparently the carpets have not been shampooed in years; yuck. Also noticed that there was no stopper for the bathroom sink (hubby couldn't shave in the morning, and had to take care of that after he arrived at the site of his presentation). There was also a HUGE wad of hair in the shower drain, which was another yuck. The water ran cold, then hot, then cold; in a 10 minute showed, we probably had 5 changes of water temperatures.
Bottom line, the hotel buildings are old and a little run-down (they even mention during the check-in that if you find anything unacceptable within 30 minutes of check-in, you'll be able to change rooms or cancel the reservation), the rooms are, for the most part, clean, but there are smoke odors, filthy carpets, and other minor issues, and, in our case, we had NO internet coverage at all. Our car was safe in the parking lot, and we felt safe in the area.
