Lovely b & b, but neither the experience nor the value matched its reputation. Even the breakfast was inconsistent in quality. The location was surprisingly remote. This is clearly a big business. No warm and fuzzier from this host and hostess.

My weekend stay at Garth was a great one! This was my first just girls weekend in the great town of Hannibal, Mo. I stayed in the Samuel Clemens room, which was very beautifully decorated. The attention to detail was great down to the mint on the pillow! John and Julie were totally friendly and very accommodating. Being able to take walks on the grounds, feed the llamas and enjoy other guests made for a memorable weekend. I will definitely be going back to Garth and going to just girls weekend. It was all a good time!
Martha

Room Tip: North bedrooms face the woods which is very pleasant. I stayed on the second floor and it was very quiet.

The wife and I stayed at Garth Mansion March 28-29 in the Dowager Cottage. We have never experienced so many amenities in a B&B. Large hot tub outside, Jetted tub and 11 nozzle shower inside. The Breakfasts were not only tasty but beautifully presented. We have already booked additional dates and can not wait to get back.

Room Tip: If you like history and a return to the past, book in the Mansion., cottages are very modern and perfect for a romantic stay.

I just returned from a 3-day stay at the Garth Mansion. Having stayed at some of the best country houses, chateau, and b & b's worldwide, I find Garth Mansion to be very special. The hospitality of Julie and John makes you feel a rarified guest at a private home rather than a customer. Julie is vivacious and welcoming. And, wonderful with the meals. The housekeeping, particularly the pressed linens and fresh beds, add so much relaxing a peace. The grounds -- under the command of John, a former colonel -- are well kept and charming for a country walk. I highly recommend Garth Mansion for its historic charm, kind innkeepers and peace-of-mind.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Garth Woodside Mansion. I stayed in the Samuel Clemens room, which is where the author Mark Twain stayed when he visited Hannibal. The Garths were childhood friends of his. The house is furnished with antiques throughout, and I was able to check out most of the other rooms, and all were lovely. Most just have showers, though some have tubs/spa tubs. The website has photos of each room with the amenities. I slept verty well. They provide robes and toothbrushes they envourage you to take.
There are warm mugs (they have a mug warmer in the kitchen), and plenty of hot and cold beverages and snacks, plus a delicious breakfast. I ate far too many of the homemade chocolate chip cookies. The hosts, John and Julie, are friendly and accomodating. They have a few pet llamas you can see while having breakfast, and a lot of wild birds. While there, I saw blue birds, robins, cardinals, blue jays, and red-headed woodpeckers. There's a parlor downstairs where you can relax, and DVDs to borrow to watch downstairs or in your room. There is also complimentary WiFi that worked perfectly throughout my stay.
The house is located about ten minutes from downtown Hannibal, where you'll find the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum and one of the top quilt stores in the country, Hickory Sticks Quilt Shop (located right across Main Street from the Mark Twain house). There are also a lot of souvenir and antique shops, so plan to allow time to shop. The Mark Twain Cave (which inspired parts of "Tom Sawyer") is about a five minute drive from downtown.

Room Tip: If you're a bibliophile, you'll want to stay in the Samuel Clemens room where Mark Twain stayed. You can also see photos of all the rooms on the B&B's website.
