Arrived to the greeting of 'Do you have reservations?' And when we replied 'No', we received a very unwelcoming look.
We didn't wait long but would have enjoyed an offer of a drink. Once seated we were told they were busy than expected and were out their most popular item fried chicken. I am not sure why a restaurant won't have on hand more than enough of the most popular item of all the items they have.
We ordered the salmon which was ok. Overly seasoned and dried out a bit. When we told our waitress the potatoes weren't done she put them back in the microwave. They came back out exactly the same.
Won't even melt the butter on them. She told us they bake partially in the oven and then finish in the micro and she thought the microwave was broken.
No offer to comp or even deduct anything from our bill.
There was one waitress and the girl bussing the tables that never smiled once! There were a lot of workers running around but seemed to have customers always waiting on something and just grabbing whomever came by to make their request to. When we asked what the vegetables were that we were served we we told 'I am not sure. We were busier than planned for so they just pull together whatever they have. That was not very comforting to hear. Later we were told it was the tops of the turnips but she wasn't sure what else. More than once we heard people being told 'we were busier than expected' excuse for one thing or another. Not very reassuring comment to hear from the establishment you are hoping can 'handle' the dinner they are preparing for us that we then have to pay for whether it was prepared as the menu stated or not.
The patio was closed due to weather but the cart of umbrellas sat in around the already crowded dinning area. So crowded the waitress seemed to contemplate their route when trying to get to a table.
I was told this was under new ownership. I did hear Mary tell some patrons she owned the place. She seemed to be in over head. Not calm or conversive, just chaotic. If leading by example the others were following very well.
Not sure what could have been done better except have some immediate experienced management take control.
Good luck. We won't be back so maybe if you stay the same others won't have such high expectations after reading this.
Just a patrons point if view for what it is worth.

This cottage turned restaurant is set in the woods; the patio dining area abuts a rocky hillside which has been groomed and lighted to provide a delightful ambiance for evening dining. The wine list included the best wines of the area. The menu was varied. The food was delicious and the wait staff were friendly and helpful.

We were delighted by every part of our experience at The Cottage. When we walked in the door we were warmly greeted and made to feel very welcome. The ambience was excellent, we sat on the patio and enjoyed beautiful live music played by a variety of young musicians. What an excellent addition to the day, not to mention the excellent brunch my wife and I shared, the vegetable frittata was excellent, fresh vegetables, fluffy eggs and a hand made biscuit. The eggs benedict (my choice) was also excellent. Wonderful locally raised Canadian bacon complimented by poached eggs, English muffin and a light and complimentary Hollandaise sauce. Too often, Eggs Benedict are overwhelmed by the sauce and underwhelming in that many restaurants use inferior bacon. The coffee was very good and the Bloody Mary was crafted, not poured out of a can.

My wife and I cannot wait to go back and have brunch again...and dinner and lunch!

My wife and I really enjoyed our evening at The Cottage. The service was excellent and the restaurant's setting, on a steep hillside above Hermann, is unbeatable for views, quiet peacefulness and overall charm. Our only minor quibble was with the rather limited offering of entrees. That minor issue aside, we had a wonderful time and will be sure to return to The Cottage on future trips to Hermann. We recommend it highly.

The location is awesome. You can sit inside or outside. The outside patio is on the side of the hill and right among the trees. So this place gets points for setting and ambiance.

The food left a lot to be desired. The rolls are good. My salad with ranch dressing hardly had any dressing at all. The ribeye was cheap, fatty and overcooked.

The broccoli pasta tasted like a microwaved Lean Cuisine meal.

The staff was very friendly, but I can't see us ever going here again.
