We booked four rooms and three out of four couples in our group commented on how grouchy the owner was. Rather than the usual range of times for breakfast we were assigned a non-negotiable breakfast time that was later than what we wanted. We also were given assigned seats for breakfast even though all breakfasts were the same. Rooms were fussily decorated and although large, lacked surfaces for suitcases, reading books, etc. As of Oct 2008 the B&B was for sale.
Bed and breakfast accommodations in Hermann are quite expensive. We chose the Captain Wohlt Inn as it is not quite as expensive as some of the newer b & b’s, but still felt it was over-priced for "older" accommodations. We were quite satisfied, but I really cannot call it luxurious.
We stayed across the street in the Captain’s Neighbor in the English Suite – a large room with a king-size bed, electric fireplace, whirlpool for two, shower, microwave, frig, and a kitchen sink in the bathroom, which was unique!! I thought it was going to be quite noisy, as we were right by the front door, and everyone had a terrible time unlocking it and opening and closing it. We were pleasantly surprised that our neighbors were quiet and not "late owls”, so we slept very well.
Breakfast was very good – quiche, bacon, fruit, zucchini bread, juice, and coffee. We also enjoyed eating in the common breakfast room and meeting the other people staying there. All in all it was a good experience, but not one of my favorite bed and breakfasts. We did notice it was for sale, so maybe the new owners will make some upgrades to the property.
My husband (fiance at the time of our trip) stayed at the Captain Wohlt Inn for the chocolate wine trail weekend in February of 2007. We specifically stayed in the Irish room in the house across the street- the Captain's Neighbor. We really enjoyed our stay. The owners, Kent and Matt, were very helpful and provided us with excellent service. They not only provided us with delicious breakfasts and yummy treats in our room, they also provided us with helpful information about shops and other attractions in Hermann. They booked dinner reservations for us, so that we didn't have to worry about it and could just enjoy our day. Although the inn is a very old house, our room was nicely decorated, very comfortable, and very clean. We enjoyed the artwork that decorated the stairway and hallway of the house. We definitely enjoyed our stay at the Captain Wohlt Inn. It was a very relaxing weekend! We certainly hope to return sometime!
Customer service is nonexistent. Owner failed to load correct rates on his website, and then thought it was acceptable to up my rates AFTER I booked a reservation. Secondly, he wanted to stick me with a giant deposit also not disclosed to me before booking. He refused to negotiate and spoke to me like it was my fault for not being aware of all of the things NOT LISTED on his website. We ended up having to take our business elsewhere after he rudely offered to cancel our reservation.
