“Wonderful visit”

We spent one night here by luck. We got the room with the terrace. Since we were tired and glad to be in one place, we decided to just have dinner and wine outside on the terrace. The owner sold us some wine---yes, we drank three bottles. We went across the street to a Kabob place and got take out for four. They served the take out on real dishes and helped carry it across the street for us. The owner and his wife joined us for a glass of wine. They were delightful. Breakfast was delicious too.

Four of us spent one night at the Hotel de Provence after stopping at many hotels between Aix en Provence and Tarascon. Most hotels had no rooms available and those that did were of poor value. The hotelier at Hotel de Provence greeted us in English and helped with our bags. We took two rooms that were large and newly decorated. One had a double bed (69 Euros) and one had two single beds. The latter room opened onto a lovely second floor terrace (85 euros). The bedding was of high quality and the sheets were ironed. We all immediately converged on the terrace after acquiring a reasonably priced, well chilled bottle of chardonnay from the hotelier. After a second bottle of chardonnay, we thought it wise to stay on the terrace, enjoy the cool breeze and order a dinner of Kabap plates from the restaurant across the street (La Corniche). The restaurant owner fixed our four take-out orders on real plates and provided us with metal utensils which we took to our terrace then returned to the restaurant owner upon fetching a third bottle of wine from the hotelier. The terrace served as a perfect site for wining, dining and relaxing after a long hot day. The hotelier and his wife are very knowledgeable of the area and offered many good suggestions to guests during breakfast. Our breakfast consisted of several types of cold meats, yogurts, orange juice, croissants, bread, cereals and hot beverages (8 euros). All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a terrace.

I stayed here for one night in May during a cycling holiday. The Hotel de Procence is elegant and well appointed with nice bedrooms and very good facilities. The owners are friendly and helpful and provide a fine breakfast. Tarascon makes a very good overnight stop with an interesting and not over-busy town for which the hotel is very handily situated.

We stayed here early May 2012 as part of a cycle tour. Tarascon itself leaves a little to be desired but is mid way to what the Provence has to offer. Great Breakfast, Great Bathroom and all with new owners that have only been in the business for 2 months.

Under new management, this small hotel is a gem. Tarascon is an excellent base for travels out into Provence with easy access to Pont du Gard and other sites.

The hotel rooms are comfortable and clean. The excellent breakfast at the large dining table with other guests is charming.

The only small complaint I have is the wifi wasn't strong in the room. The solution? Enjoy the solitude of the small bibliotheque at the top of the stairs.

I, too, stayed in this hotel and this town in May, 2011 and agree fully with ILUS. There is nothing about Tarascon or "Hotel de Provence" to attract or charm anyone as both are very poor.

Our front-facing room in this worn-down hotel from 80 years ago was large--a suite with a sunroom in fact--but very old, worn out (including the miserable bed), furnished with junk and neglected for many, many years. Our front view was a nothing, interesting only as it faced a crummy fast-food-and-soda shop which had to be a drug-dealing venue. It was visited only by Algerians or Moroccans in pricey cars for a few minutes, who then moved on quickly. A stupid-looking guy sat on the adjoining building's steps for hours with his cellphone--evidently the look-out whom I named "Goose".

Continental breakfast was poor, very simple, at one large table. There are no amenities but we did not care about that. I was happy to leave.

The town itself is washed up and filled with immigrants which only the French government wanted, 20-30 years ago. Not anymore. I would not stay in this town or hotel again or recommend it to any of my friends. Anyone who does stays there at his own peril.

Both Tarascon and the Hotel de Provence are hugely disappointing. Tarascon is an old, desolate town, and the noxious odors from the papermill and the slaughterhouse are so strong that they are nauseating. There are no decent restaurants, and the area, including neighboring Beaucaire, is depressed and dirty. The name of the hotel does not connote Provence at all--not even in terms of decor. The showpiece of the hotel is the giant head of a bull, mounted in the staircase, which appears to be a memento of the nearby slaughterhouse. The hotel is located in a questionable area on the main street, across from a fast-food restaurant, where the constant traffic seems unrelated to the purchase of food and raises obvious safety concerns. The private parking that the proprietor advertises is neither private nor guarded; you are parking on the main street, along with everyone else. An adequate breakfast and an old bed is what you get here, if you can stand the stench of the town and put aside your concern for your safety, especially if you have a terrace room. Hotel de Provence is grossly overrated. If you are interested in Provence, stay in Arles or Avignon.
