Le Clair de la Plume is a great hotel in Grignan, France. They pride themselves on the small details and bring freshly made cookies and treats to your room every day. The building itself is spectacular and the food in the restaurant (and the tea rooms) is amazing and very reasonably priced considering the quality. There is also another garden restaurant but that wasn't open when we stayed there as it was early April. The only downside is the price of breakfast, €16pp, but the hotel is located in the middle of the village so there are several cafes and patisseries nearby.

Dear Sir,

Many thanks for your very kind review. The whole Team and I are very grateful and appreciate your help in our on-going quest for quality improvement.

I understand you might have found the breakfast price a bit expensive (€16), but I would like to point out that this can be explained by our choice of a wide variety of mostly local products and produces. We have, for example, 4 sorts of honey, 2 kinds of spreads for toast, 5 sorts of jams, 2 daily homemade cakes, pure fruit juices, local mineral water, fresh fruit salad, homemade rice pudding, homemade seasonal fruit compote, traditional breads (including whole wheat baguette), assortment of fresh fruits, two kinds of the finest French butter, eggs, daily made all-butter Danish pastries, local handmade biscuits, assortment of French cheeses, fresh cold cuts, as well as a wide range of hot drinks such as high quality freshly roasted and ground coffee, a choice of 45 different teas, traditional hot French chocolate, etc.

We are looking forward to welcoming you again, and sincerely hope you’ll be convinced to try our quality breakfast on your next visit.

Sincerely yours,
Jean Luc VALADEAU

This hotel is a gem: from the the very friendly and help- and thoughtful staff, the very fine, romantic and beautiful looks of garden, house and restaurant to the very comfortable bed and last but not least, the good restaurant and the perfect breakfast buffet!
We stayed in room "Sud" - a room that took me in the moment I entered it. Colors, decoration etc. - it makes you feel at home. Or maybe at a friend's home. A large writing desk with books on it (an encyclopedia of the 19th century and many novels) reminded us, that we are in a village, where the most famous writing woman of the 17th century, Mme de Sevigné had stayed for some time and had died there in the Château.
We had dinner in the restaurant which is in the wintergarden with view to the beautiful, almost baroque garden (where all kinds of herbs are planted in big pots). Dinner was delicious, the main dishes lacked maybe a little bit of salt. And the desert was just to die for: I had never tasted such a fine desert. Trio of rhubarbe. With a souflé that seemed to come directly from heaven....

The night in that cosy room was perfect. Finally a big enough bed in France with a huge "duvet" instead of the usual blanquets.

Breakfast: a rich buffet in the historical old kitchen. All sorts of homemade confits, marmelades, jams, milk rices etc. Baguette, Croissants and "viennoiseries" (sweet chocolate and raisin croissants etc.), yoghurts, different locals honeys etc.etc.etc.

Sadly, the garden and the roses in the village had still winter break. We have to come back to see the old roses, the gardens, the lavender fields and to take a bath in the natural organic swimming pool.

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,
We all here extremely touched by such a nice comment. Grignan has more than 300 roses trees, dispatched all around the village. Flowers are mostly magnificent from mid-April till mid-June. Lavender starts to bloom from mid-June till mid-July. In winter time, the truffle season starts from mid-November till mid-March: the opportunity to discover how to harvest truffle, and enjoy them in our restaurant!
All the team is at your disposal to welcome you again at Le Clair de la Plume!
Very warm regards.
Jean Luc

I booked just one night for my husband's 60th birthday - just a couple of hours from home but the idea was to have a superb meal and in general a little celebration.

It has taken me some time to write the review - just catching up with half a dozen or so, but I did want to put a few things on record about this place and had half-hoped to go again, at lunchtime, before drawing conclusions. Haven't had time yet so it is based on the one visit.

The room - superb. Really excellent. The staff were also pleasant, and the setting is delightful. The breakfast was quite simply one of the best I've ever had in a hotel.

But.

When I booked, there were only 'room and meal packages' available, but I had hoped we could in fact pay extra and have à la carte (this being a birthday meal). Apparently not.

The menu was NOT cheap, and both the starter and main course were fish (difficult for those who don't like fish, but we do so no problem). However, and although it looked pretty under a pile of greenery, the starter was supposed to be marinaded salmon on a crusty base. My salmon was a fatty, grey, unapettizing end piece which I hardly touched but commented on it. Answer? "Oh. I'll mention it to the chef".

And that was that.

The main course was fish on a base of lentils. The fish was OK but the lentils utterly tasteless. So on the whole, pretty mediocre. The desert was passable but not exactly a triumph - mini-muffins and diced melon.

We left feeling really let down over the meal.

I was really not expecting any special treatment because it was a 60th birthday, but I did mention it to the staff on arrival, wondering if they would offer us even a glass of wine as an apéritif or stick a sparkler on his dessert but... no. Not a criticism but little touches like that are appreciated.

Dear Madam,
Many thanks for your review.
We are very grateful for you appreciation about the room, breakfast and staff.
But it is very odd when you mentioned that we only sell 'room and meal packages' : please check on our website booking system at any time. You may book only the room whenever you wish (as long as there is still some rooms available on the requested date).
I have of course noticed that you wrote you review 7 months after your experience, and, as I do not have your family name and date of stay, I cannot give you a precise answer : maybe have you booked via an external site such as smartbox? They propose packages including room, breakfast and dinner. That could explain the fact that you did not get “room only” proposals.
I am extremely sad to read that you did not enjoy our food.
Especially as all our menus are made with fresh products only. We are making daily efforts to improve our cuisine and we all here hoping to have the pleasure of welcoming you again at le Clair de la Plume.
Yours faithfully.
Jluc

It was rather late in the day when we came across this gem on our way up to the Chateau which is well worth a visit too. We were offered the plat du jour, which was breast of goose with potato Rosti, mushrooms and tomatoes. It was delicious. The staff were very helpful, the Maitre D having worked in Australia and Europe spoke English which was very fortunate. Afternoon tea was being put out when we left and we promised ourselves we will visit again in March, hopefully, we will be able to take advantage of the lovely garden setting then.....

We found Grignan by accident last summer, stopping for a coffee on our way home after a day out with family. We really liked both the village and the look of Le Clair de la Plume, so much so that we booked a weekend stay a few weeks later. We enjoyed that so much that we booked again for the "Réveillon" (New Year's Eve). The special menu looked amazing, but my wife doesn't eat nuts, and some of the dishes did contain them. When I called to book, the staff couldn't have been more helpful, reassuring us that the chef would be able to take this into account. When we checked in they confirmed that this had been noted on our reservation.

The meal was every bit as excellent as we had hoped. I had thought that the chef might just subsitute other dishes for the "nutty" ones, but instead he had taken the trouble to prepare the same dishes nut-free for my wife, so we could both enjoy the same menu. It's exactly that attention to detail that makes this hotel so special.

If I have any criticism of the meal at all it is just that it was difficult to choose a single wine to accompany all the courses, but the wine list has a very limited selection of small bottles. An option to have some wines by the glass, perhaps chosen to accompany each dish, would have been useful. Our inevitable compromise was two bottles...

Our room was comfortable, with a good-quality bed and modern and spotlessly clean bathroom. Being an old building the rooms differ in size and price, and do be aware that there's no lift so if you have a second-floor room you do have stairs to climb. The hotel was warm and cozy in December, the rooms are air-conditioned if you're there in the heat of summer.

Grignan as a whole is a lovely little village, and the Chateau is well worth a visit. We've already booked our next stay at Le Clair de la Plume for next summer.

Room Tip: The web site has a plan, some rooms have a terrace, it's worth looking at the plan and asking fo...

We have just returned from France and spent the last three days in this nostalgic and peaceful great hotel.
We received a very friendly reception on our arrival and must comment that ALL the staff were delightful during our 3 day stay. Service was excellent and nothing was too much for them
Our room, Anne, was large and very clean overlooking the front garden, with a good size bathroom.
Breakfast buffet was a delight and layed out in the homely wonderfull kitchen, just like as if it were in a private country house. Tables were layed in the front garden, with large cream coloured umbrellas and at night dinner was also served here, with individual spot lamps illuminating each table, giving the whole atmosphere a fairy tale ambiance.
Food was superb and well presented. Choice was from an a la carte menu or a different daily set menu, from which you could pick and mix. We think the chef had a slight pacific rim influence on some dishes, which was very refreshing in a subtle way, inovative and delicious. ( You must book your table, as the restaurant is open to non residents and when we were there, always full ).
The Hotel had a small comfortable lounge with daily newspapers.
Parking was no problem. You were given a window permit enableing you to park just opposite the entrance in a restricted area to the public, or to park in their private area approx 250 metres from the Hotel.
A small swimming pool and sun bed area is also available to guests, set within a quiet garden, where you can also have drinks and snacks. This is approx 250 meters from the hotel and you are also able to park outside this area if you don't feel like walking.
We had a very happy stay and do not think that the web-site gives this hotel the justificaction it surely deserves. We will definately recommend to our friends.

Room Tip: Our room was in the main building overlooking the garden restaurant.
