“Great location, clean but other than that...”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

We stayed for one night at the end of August. The bad first: Firstly, parking is a huge problem, there is only one beach in this town, so parking is not easy to find. Secondly, our welcome was also not very friendly. Thirdly, the room - very old, dated, the air conditioning did not work and at night with the patio doors open to try to cool down it was very noisy, there is a bar across the road and in the hotel on ground level. The good: location, location, location...you can walk to the beach, and there is a pretty good restaurant on the beach, good service. The hotel - it was clean and the service staff was very friendly. The breakfast was not bad, standard continental. I was glad we were only spending one night though.

Room Tip: Try to stay on the upper floors, I think it is quieter.

The proximity to the beach is great! The staff is lovely. But, the hotel is very tired and wasn't a grand hotel to start with. The room's bathroom was tiny and had a small shower stall with a plastic curtain, no place to put soap etc. The A/C was not very effective. The TV was tiny and perched on the wall, but did have satellite so many English programs were available. The bed was hard! The linens were clean, but the room could use a good scrub. The elevator bounced when you stepped into it - was a bit disconcerting. The breakfast was not good. The coffee tasted like instant coffee; the breads were a bit stale, (hard) boiled eggs were mushy and the hot offering looked a bit scary. I would not stay here again.

A 3 star hotel with the best location in Salema! We didn't have a booking but were lucky to get 2 rooms for 2 nights. Reception very friendly, rooms are a bit dated but clean, not a big hotel, all the rooms have small balconies with a sea view. 2 minute walk to a lovely beach, nice restaurants in walking distance. Breakfast basic but nice, free wifi in lobby. Lots of beautiful places to discover a short drive away! You can get fancier accommodation in Salema but it will not beat the location!

Room Tip: All rooms have a sea view!

We spent two weeks at Hotel Residential and loved every second. All the staff are extremely friendly - not a forced friendliness that you often experience on holiday, a natural and genuine friendliness. If you want a comfortable, clean and affordable hotel, with great staff, then this is the place to stay. If you want luxurious bathrooms and modern decor, then stay some else and pay the price for this. Hotel Residential is extremely good value for the price you pay.

We chose a double room and were located on the 3rd floor. a good view of the beach. rooms are clean (cleaned daily) and comfortable with a small balcony, tv and air-conditioning. The bathroom was very small, but it didn't bother us. Towels are changed daily and soaps and small sachet of shower gel is provided. We found the room comfortable and airy, we loved being able to lie in bed and watch the sea. The room itself is spacious and clean with a large wardrobe, bathrobes and a hair dryer.

The bar area is great and we had a couple of good chats with the barman who gave us advice about local restaurants and asked us about where we had been in the local area. He also makes an excellent margaritas!!!

Breakfast was fantastic. A huge variety of fresh fruit, cold meats, cheese scrambled and boiled eggs, bread rolls, pastries and cakes. Coffee and hot milk plus a variety of teas and orange juice. The breakfast room tended to be busier between 9 and 9:30 but we only had to wait for a table twice and only then for about 2 mins. No big deal.

We stayed for two weeks from the 27th July to 9th August and enjoyed a thoroughly relaxing holiday. We had a hire car so we got to explore many of the beautiful beaches surrounding Salema plus Lagos, Silves, Monchique and we did a day trip to Lisbon. If we were staying for a shorter time, we probably wouldn't have bothered with the car and used the local buses instead, but the car was a good choice for us. Salema is only half an hour from Lagos which is much larger and more 'touristy' we enjoyed a couple of boat trips and looking round the harbour there, but then were happy to return to the quieter village of Salema.

Salema beach is beautiful, very clean and quite long - large cliffs on both sides. It got busier once it got to the month of August, but we had bought our own cheap little sunshade which meant we could go further up the beach. Once it got to August, the sun beds and shades get taken (or reserved, which I found incredibly irritating) quite early. So if you want one its best to get down to the beach around 10-11 am.

All the restaurants in the village are great and we enjoyed every meal. It is a good idea to book your restaurant in advance as they all get very busy. Especially in August and at weekends.

All in all we had a fantastic holiday in the sunshine and we were very happy with this little hotel. I would stay here again, and I can see why people come back here year on year.

Obrigado, ciao Hotel Residential. No doubt we will be back again soon!

Stayed 2 nights, perfect location, room was average but value for money as includes a good breakfast. Would stay again based on location. Free wifi in lounge was handy, house bar had a nice family atmosphere.

This was my 4th visit to the hotel across a number of years and my 3rd review of it on TA. You know what you're getting with this hotel ie -
clean, functional rooms
sea view and balcony
friendly enough service
location just over the road from Salema's nice beach
Passable breakfast and late bar

Its the only real hotel in town and only has about 25 (ish) rooms- I've never been when its really full which is a good thing as the dining room is small so more if more than around 10 groups in there at once and you get strangers 'perching' on your table.

Couple of points on Salema-
1. We met a Canadian couple who had visited as they thought its a typical fishing village. Part of it is, and the old guys still sit in the boat house looking out to sea most days. It also has a large number of holiday apartments up the hill too though. It therefore has the feel of a small resort rather than an authentic village.
2. Even in July, it gets chilly at night as theres usually a cool breeze. You will need a jumper!

My husband and I read about this hotel in Rick Steve's guide to Portugal and he was spot on with his recommendation! You will not find a better value for your money than staying at the Hotel Residencial. The staff was friendly, the room was spotless (but dated furnishings) and every room has a great view of the ocean. The location is right on the beach and the village is steps away with lots of dining options. We highly recommend you book here if you want to have relaxing time on the beach before hitting the crowds further east on the Algarve.

Room Tip: All rooms have an ocean view so no worries!
