“Go there first, get a map of the old city and enjoy the museum”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

When arriving in Sidon/Saida's Old City, it's a good idea to go straight to the soap museum and grab a free detailed map of the Old City's souks. This really helps visiting the labyrinthine alleys afterwards.

The museum itself, located in a very old house, is quite interesting, even though no one is making soap there anymore (would be nice to see people actually making soap to complement the visit). The shop sells slightly pricey but excellent soaps.

“A must if you visit the old town”
Reviewed 14 June 2013

The soap museum is one of the few places that are properly renovated in old Sidon. And checking out the soap making process is a definite plus

“Very nice place”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

I visited the soap museum many times ! the museum is free, and tours are available in english and french. In the museum you can learn about the traditional soap industry in the middle east and how soap was manufactured. It is also a museum about the arab bath culture and the material used there, there is also a collection of pipes and pottery many of them are dated to phoenicians and Roman times.
Also the museum itself is a historic 17th century traditional Lebanese house with wonderful souks nearby.

“About as exciting as soap making can be”
Reviewed 5 April 2013

It's soap making. So it's not going to be real exciting. However, my wife and I had a pleasant visit on March 7, 2013. The short personal tour was in English and free. The cafe adjoining the museum was nicely done. And the soap sold in the gift shop was high quality.

If you visit the Soap Museum, I recommend that you also wander around the attached souk and take a look at the nearby Debbane Palace, which is also free. There are great views from the tower at the top of the palace. You should also go to the nearby Khan El Franj - a 17th Century market that Riccardo Montalban may have given his name to after a chastising Hervé Villechaize with all his wrath.

“don't miss it !”
Reviewed 7 March 2013

it's is a wonderfully restaured old soap factory on the outskirts of the souks, start your trip there : it is free and you get a good citymap of the historic sites in Sidon ! Buy some soap too :-) the museum is free anyway !
