Not cheap for sure and not easy to find (escondida = hidden) but all worth it. Stayed first two nights with another couple in Senzontle, one of their two-level fully equipped hilltop cabins (with our own designated golf cart, to wit, to help us climb!), then two nights in their gorgeous beachfront Ixchell suite, even better. Surf to lull you into sleep. Pelicans each morning diving for lunch out the front. Its terrace includes a jacuzzi, inside a canopy bed, all of it tastefully decorated. Sandy beach, several bars --if you happen upon bartender Jorge: he's the absolute margarita pundit. Nothing, literally nothing was wrong with our stay.

We booked 4 nights at Playa Escondida after our wedding in Sayulita. We were blown away by the beauty of this hidden location. It was even more luxurious than we expected and absolutely stunning in person. The entire staff is amazing and work hard to meet your every need. They made us feel special at every opportunity. Thank you Playa Escondida for a wonderful mini Honeymoon. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Ask the staff for their recommendation based on what you're looking for.

Our family (2 adults & 2 kids ages 11 & 12) spent 7 nights at Playa Escondida in mid-February. While we have been to Mexico many times, this was our first visit to the Sayulita area as it was recommended by many family and friends. The reviews are fairly accurate. If you are looking for top notch service with many pools, many people and a large resort-like feel, Playa Escondida is not for you. Playa is a small eco resort and is staffed by many locals, most who will go out of their way to make sure your visit is exceptional.

ACCOMMODATIONS: The resort is situated just south of Sayulita (about a 1 hour drive north of PV). I highly recommend having the resort set up round trip transportation to/from the airport. We booked Casa Rocasa which is about 80 steps up from the main resort in the trees with an amazing view of the ocean. A few things here.. The casita was quite large with a main living room, kitchen, large bedroom and two baths (both open air, including the shower). All of the windows were open (i.e. no screens) so if that bothers you, I would consider something else. We didn't have any issues with bugs, however, when we arrived, we noticed a large amount of feces left on top of the refrigerator. My husband mentioned it during the tour of the resort with guest services and they just shrugged their shoulders. While the view was amazing, be aware that you need to access the stairs (80+ up & 80+ down) if you want to get to/from the restaurants/pool/beach. After a day or two we got used to the walk (hike). On day five, there was a water issue in the main bathroom sink. I use the word 'issue' not so lightly as the water backed up and exploded on my husband which smelled like sewage. This happened twice. When brought to the attention of Guest Services, they were very apologetic and moved us to Sol 1 (right on the beach) for two nights while they fixed the plumbing problem. Guest Services was absolutely terrific and made this potential bad situation, good. Regarding Sol 1.. We loved it! Right on the beach and very close access to the beach, pool and restaurant. There is a large living area and huge patio that overlooks the beach and water. The main bedroom is upstairs with a set of interesting steps leading there. This could be a bit tricky to navigate if you have to use the restroom in the middle of the night. We moved back to Rocasa for our 7th night.

BEACH/POOL: The beach is terrific. It is private and there are zero peddlers hawking their wares, which we loved. Depending on the day, the surf can be large so you need to be cautious. Most of the days we were there it was calm which made for a lot of ocean swimming. Our last day the surf was large and it took out a few people trying to boogie board. I would definitely keep this in mind if you have small children.. The pool might be a better option. Speaking of pool. It was beautiful, but small. It is located right off of the main restaurant. Often you would see people swimming in the evening while others were eating dinner. This didn't bother us, but some commented that it was strange. In the afternoon, you could hang off the side of the pool (infinity) and watch the whales frolic in the ocean.

RESTAURANTS: There is one restaurant and a 'sports bar'. All the food comes from the same kitchen. We had two dinners in the main restaurant and ate their for breakfast each morning. The food was good (not excellent), but for Mexico it was fine. We spent most of our evenings in the sports bar as it was more casual and the vibe was fun and low key. The sunsets here were absolutely incredible, some of the best I have ever seen.

STAFF: The staff is what made the trip.. The bar staff were terrific and they really worked their tails off (running back and forth from the beach bar to all the palapa's all day long). Jose was our absolute favorite. He was genuine and really wanted to do his best for the guests. Our daughter was quite picky with the food and he always remembered what she liked. I hope he is recognized for his hard work.

MISC: A lot of the reviews, website and staff will tell you that you can walk into town. The two ways to do this are either via the beach (note: it is a trek, walking over many rocks, etc) or via the road. I would absolutely NOT walk the road, which is very rural and I am not sure how safe. It is very easy for the staff to call a taxi to take you into town (about $10 bucks each way). Highly recommend the beach rooms to the north of the pool and restaurant. They are amazing.. Bring your ear plugs because the surf is loud, but the view is simply amazing. Another recommendation is to have a massage, it was wonderful!

We loved that the resort was small and really felt that the staff would do anything to make your trip terrific. If we decide to return, we would stay closer to the beach.

Room Tip: Stay in the beach rooms north of the pool. Very worth the additional price!

I travel the world a lot and this has been one of the top places we have ever stayed in regardless of price. ALL staff were incredibly professional regardless of what gets requested of them. ( and it wasnt easy I am sure as we changed rooms from Jungle to beach front so we could experience everything) Sol 3 is perfect, you cant ask for more.. ALL the rooms have obviously had a lot of thought with a stylish eclectic design ( congratulations whomever was responsible for that!) The private beach is a dream... NO hawkers. Last week they were at 86% capacity and if we saw more than 3 or 4 couples it was a crowded day..lol. Incredibly romantic location, laid back, friendly and crazy good food ..Ask Lalo ( or any staff) for their seafood platter.. Best ever with LOCAL loster, tuna, massive scampi etc etc ! ( surely I can be more original??) All barstaff couldnt have been better.. Happy hour from 5.30 until sunset kicks everything off perfectly, and world class cocktails ( mango wango= heaven) I read other reviews and wanted to make mine stand out but thats going to be hard as they are all pretty damned good.. I feel like I am writing an Oscar Award speech where I need to thank everyone responsible for the most beautiful friendly good value (at any price) experience...Just try it...now ...before everyone else gets there. Please dont book in November as I want to go back and see the turtles hatching on the beach. If you have to then its worth calling Tony the Sales Manager ( cool guy) or Paola when you get there for anything. They have INFINITE patience for any enquiry or request.. AWESOME!

Room Tip: Sol 3 is a small room ON THE BEACH! but is PERFECT as the view from the bed IS the ocean. It also h...

Was an amazing trip to Sayulita, amazing food, beautiful views, and friendly staff from all local businesses!!

Stayed at Escondida from the first minute of arrival was a great experience. Was an amazing view from my room, and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Specifically Paola, made a super effort for my stay to be as comfortable as possible.

Recommend this place for anyone visiting Sayulita!

Playa Escondida is the perfect destination for those who value natural beauty, excellent service and a down-to-earth approach to leisure. This small venue set in an incredibly isolated but stunning piece of shoreline affords guests privacy, tranquility and luxury while doing without the junkie stuff that more commercial establishments offer. The restaurant is superb. The entire staff is top notch and make an effort to learn guests' names within 12 hours of arrival. Each room is unique. We stayed in Deseo this time with the surf crashing a mere 75' fro our palapa. That made it difficult to hear knocks at the door, but drifting off to the rhythm of the surf was heavenly. There are also rooms removed from the shore with spectacular sea views, and everything in between.

Playa Escondida is amazing. When we first arrived, I was actually a little freaked out. It is away from town, and well into the jungle....where it meets the most perfect beach. The only thing that I would say to beware of, is that the website will tell you that it is an "easy, short walk" into Sayulita. No way. The road taking visitors in and out of the hotel is mountainous, curving and long. There is a way to venture across the beach and up the mountain over into town, which we did once. It is treacherous. Over lots of big rocks on the beach and then up hill. We hike a decent amount, so it wasn't too terrible, but it was challenging.
It doesn't matter really because a taxi is just 10 minutes from your every need and is the way to go for sure. The town of Sayulita is everything we hoped, rapt with great shops, restaurants and surfing culture. It is the best of the best in Mexico, that we have seen thus far.
But its the resort that matters right now, as I need to say that it is over the top romantic!! So adorable, it is built into a mountain, with little stone paths that lead to bars, the infinity pool, spa area, and the incredible palm tree lined beach. There are plenty of very helpful staff members at your beck and call. They can't do enough to make your stay enjoyable. Service on all occasions, was outstanding. The restaurants, there are two, serve a great selection of items. A truly large menu for such a small place. Food was almost always perfect, with very few exceptions. Bartenders are accommodating and fun. Drinks are a good pour too! And of course, poolside and beach service, thank you very much!
But the best thing was our room. We went for the Luna Penthouse, after staying the first half of our visit in the Luna Allegre, just below it. Allegre was lovely, albeit a bit hot the first night. There is no A/C in these units, just great breezes and fans. Well it didn't matter about all that in the Penthouse. There were windows almost all the way around, so the breeze was amazing. The amenities in this room were fabulous. See pictures. Just simply the best place we ever stayed. Not in a Ritz Carlton kind of way, mind you. But imagine being a jungle Disney Princess! Get the picture?
Location is great for the escape factor. Its quiet, relaxing and child free. Go and see for yourself why this hidden treasure is so hidden, it is in fact a gem in the jungle, with your own private beach paradise.

Room Tip: Beachfront. Absolutely!
