McCallum Lodging House
Reviewed 16 July 2013

We stayed 2 nights at McCallum at the beginning of June. It was hard to find when we arrived by taxi in the dark, despite the instructions on the website, as we did not know that the houses have been renumbered and it is the second number in the address that is the relevant one. While the family here are very nice and tried to be helpful, dealing with complex issues such as the best way to see the scattered Trujillo sites, was difficult with their lack of English and our limited Spanish. And we did not see/experience any of the lunchtime cooking or group life mentioned by other reviews. We were puzzled by this place’s very high rating in its TA category as it was really quite basic accommodation. It was very reasonably priced (40 Sols pn for a double with bathroom) but rooms were just adequate (though the bathroom was reasonably well-finished), stairwells were unfinished concrete with no handrail and the living/dining common area was open to the weather. It is also located several blocks back from the beach with the shops, restaurants and transport into Trujillo.
As for Huanchaco, it was not impressive in the winter - a grey sand beach with loads of litter, both washed up along the shoreline and surrounding overflowing bins, mostly expensive restaurants and at least half an hour (by bus or collectivo) into Trujillo (plus a walk to get to the centre) to do anything that starts there. If you are not a surfer looking for a summer beach vibe but simply want to see the local Trujillo sights, you may be better to stay in central colonial Trujillo with its nice Plaza de Armas, historic churches and pedestrian precinct with shops and tour agencies, then just make a short visit to Huanchaco to see the reed boats in association with a visit to the nearby Chimu site of Chan Chan.

I was at the hostel for five nights. There are other better options in town. They never once cleaned the room or bathroom, which is gross since you put toilet paper and tampons in the trash.
The Internet was useless unless at 4am due to loud obnoxious israelies downloading movies at all hours of the day. You will be unable to check your email much less anything else. It appears nice to start, then the small things fall apart.
There is only one guy who speaks a slight amount of English so don't expect ANY helpful information. Such as a place to eat, have laundry done, or the buses. Worst hostel in south America.
Stay away and spend your money elsewhere.

This is the best hostel I've stayed in in my 2 months of travelling South America so far. The family that runs this place is happy and friendly and they truly take you in like you're one of their own and genuinely care about you! I stayed in a dorm which was small and not always clean, but it was only 15 soles! The kitchen is great. Laundry service nice. Good wifi in common area. And Patricia, the momma, cooks amazing meals. I met some awesome people in the common area, too. We ended up staying here for 8 nights and it was so hard to leave! If you go to Huanchaco - stay here!!!

This hostel is like a home. It's run by a family, with one of the nicest ladies ever. She's a really good cook!! Staff is great, location fine (five minuts walk to beach), rooms ok, hot showers. Huanchaco is a bit boring, but in this hostel you'll meet other people really fast and you can also just chill with the staff.

Came here after a disappointing night in a Trip Advisor budget-award winner and found the rooms were pleasantly just 25 soles for a single with its own bathroom. There are also shared rooms available. Looks cleaner and is cozier than nearby places advertising 10 sole rooms. Wifi is available though weak in rooms and better in the courtyard with pleasant seats and hammocks. The courtyard isn't the quietest as guests and the great family are always around. The family is super friendly and willing to share everything they have, including information, food, and stories. Try a delicious marciano, a fresh fruit puree popsicle made with distilled water and no added sugar. Tasty homestyle breakfast and lunch available as well as large water bottles for sale (only 2 soles, like the cheaper markets). There was a bit of construction on the new fourth floor that woke me up on the third (earliest was 9:15 AM) that goes on during the day.

We stayed here for 5 days having only booked one night. When we first arrived I was a little underwhelmed and couldnt figure out what all the fuss was about...but soon found out.

The family are wonderful and although they do live there they have a our house is your house policy so we never felt in the way.

We had a double room on the 3 floor that was clean had storage for our clothes and a good double bed. It's not the Ritz but for £11 a night it was brilliant.

The communal areas are great, with full use of the kitchen, the tv and the outdoor hammocks. We had lunch made one day for us for 8 soles and it was beautiful.

It's close to the beach without having any of the noise of the beach bars and we were lucky enough to meet some great people during our stay there.

Amazing place. Amazing value!

We stayed here for three nights. Rooms and showers are fine, kitchen is a mess. There was a reconstruction going on at that time, what made the place a bit dirty and messy. Also there was a lot of noise during the day which made us decide to change hostel after 3 days.
