The little town of Richmond now has another attraction to add to its list and this one is a beauty. The Richmond Boat House office located in a very green park off the main street is where you start off for your trip. Here you collect your hamper if you are doing what we did – a boat ride including a hamper for a picnic plus small bottles of sparkling wine. You can also just hire a row boat.
The boat we chose was the Huon pine dingy, perfect for picnics with a comfy seat. I bought a lovely white lace parasol from them as it was a sunny day and then we walked down to the water, stepped aboard put in the oars and rowed away.
First we rowed downstream then back up to the famous Richmond Bridge. Here we moored and opened the hamper and the bottles for a wonderfully generous picnic and like Ratty said in the Wind in the Willows there was “breadbuttersaladcheese salamicoldchickencoldhamchutney” followed by a huge date loaf and all that for just the two of us! We sat in the reeds below the bridge watching the ducks and reading out loud from our copy of the Wind in the Willows and the glorious description of the river – well it was just that.
We had the boat for an hour which was perfect for rowing, reading and picnicking.
