The best way to understand what it's like to live in Kansas City is to walk around Brookside. Get a cup of local coffee, shop at the Dime Store, buy a sandwich at the Italian deli and eat it at a table on the sidewalk. Sit down at a bar and order the Boulevard Beer on tap. Meet the neighbors. It's an amazing place.

I wish that I lived in Brookside. I love the Roasterie coffee shop, Bella Napoli, all the neat little shops and the walking trail. A nice urban community.

Set in a suburb of Kansas City built in the 1930s and 1940s, Brookside was an outpost of shops for those who had moved south of town. It provided a full array of stores for clothing, drugs and sundries, furnishings, groceriies and banking. It was set up as a small town right across from an elementary school and churches with convenient walks throughout. Brookside suffered from the inevitable push of the suburbs further south and west with years of declining sales. However, the rediscovery of the residential area south ot the Country Club Plaza has led to a renaissance for Brookside. New boutique shops entice shoppers to move beyond the search for basics. One store that survived the up and downs is the Five and Dime that still offers a full stock of "stuff" that is inexpensive and interesting. Take some time to walk through the stores and imagine yourself a new resident of the Kansas City suburbs. Even more interesting is to drive through the area and pick out a dream house suited just for you.

This area is a little small, but has a great pedestrian feel. A lot of different quirky shops set this little area of town apart. From the General store to the toy store, you'll find a shop you can enjoy. The restaurants in the area range from nationwide franchises to one of a kind custard shops. It's a fun area to spend some time at.
