I lodged with the Hilton President, during a recent business trip for a total of seven days and six nights. The best thing about this hotel for me was its proximity to the KC convention center. The center was located only one block from the hotel. I really appreciated this because I was in attendance of a national conference being held at the convention center and I was able to quickly make it to the room and back as needed.

As for the hotel itself, upon entering you will walk into a grand lobby with high ceilings and marble floors. From the outside, the hotel is a bit underwhelming and your not exactly sure what to expect when you arrive, but it is truly classical and elegant. If you have stayed at Hilton's before, you'll notice that this property is a little different from the rest and we were informed that it was only recently acquired by the company after a short transition period.

The staff were all very pleasant and helpful throughout the entire stay. My employer booked the room and faxed over corresponding documentation prior to my stay. This made check-in simple, easy and (best of all) hassle free. Front desk staff happily answered all of our questions and made suggestions for dinner each night. Internet is free if you log on as a guest each day ( it was a little tricky at first because it appears to expire, but it let us log on each day for free).

We parked Valet which is recommended and you can come and go as much as you leave for twenty dollars a day. The Valet staff were probably my favorite (all but the exception of one guy who had not been on schedule until midweek and candidly asked, "do you need help?" upon reentering the hotel - after which I explained to him that I was headed to my room, he was more than hospitable for the remainder of the stay).

The hotel is an older building and the rooms are very small compared to standard size rooms in most hotels. As mentioned in several other reviews, I witnessed the loud knocking from the pipes. It went on for quite some time and we called the front desk who informed maintenance and they came to our room to fix the problem. Although it resolved the knocking one night, the next few days it resumed temporarily on and off. I could not really tell what caused the sound, but found it pointless to call the front desk for a second time. The room was spotless and each day the cleaning staff did a wonderful job keeping it tidy.

Room service was delish, had a speedy delivery and was actually reasonably priced. The serving sizes were huge. We passed the Drum Room each night, but for some reason, I never felt compelled to stop in for a drink. The breakfast buffet is open during the mornings and the hotel will sell you a $10.00 voucher as opposed to the standard $15.00 at the front desk. The food there was also good.

If you're superstitious beware! The hotel has 13 floors and the center elevator actually stops at the 13th floor. I found this a little strange (because I have never seen it in a hotel, most usually skip from 12th floor to 14th floor), but there must be some reasonable/historical explanation, right?

Overall, I would say its a great hotel to stay in if you need to be in The Power & Light District for an event.

Thanks for the very detailed review of your visit to our hotel. I am pleased you enjoyed just about every aspect of your visit.
About the 13th floor. Yes, kind of an interesting story to the floor. Back in the 1920's and 1930's the floor was used for a few different purposes. One was trunk and baggage storage. Many people travelling in those days would use oversized trunks, the rooms were simply too small to handle the amounts and size of the luggage, so the baggage was stored on that floor. The floor was also used by the hotel owner as dormitories for several of the service staff. And finally the owner of the hotel in the 1920's had hunting dogs that he kept on that floor, so there are many stories that we know of that relate to that floor. The floor now houses several of our executive suites. The hotel overall has so many stories and such a rich history, and that is just a glimpse.

The best and it keeps getting better with each visit! Old school service and quality starting upon arrival from Wallace at the front door, to Nick the front desk manager, housekeeping and the other front desk folks...perfect in every way. An additional treasure is the superb Providence restaurant located in the hotel. Manager Rick Brook, has established an experienced and professional staff all of whom work toghther as a skilled team to deliver a great dining experience, excellent food and a classic menu with more than a few pleasant surprises. I look forward to my next trip to Kansas City in late January. Many thanks

This hotel is a nice blend of old and new. The lobby and bar clearly show that the President has been around for a long time, and since we visited during the Christmas season, the period decorations were very nice. On the other hand, our rooms were modern with nice large bathrooms. Everything as clean and well maintained. Service was very good; I'd particularly mention the valet parkers since we arrived during a snow/sleet storm and they were amazingly cheerful. Front desk was very helpful in giving us connecting rooms even though I had forgotten to reserve them. Breakfast buffet is just OK, but made-to-order omelets upgraded the experience. We were in town for the Symphony and this location was great. All in all, a good choice for downtown KC.

Modern day hotels often come with predictability - standard sized rooms, well functioning bathrooms, airy reception areas, and updated furniture and lighting. They also often come with blandness. I had a business meeting at a very large, bland newer hotel one block away from the Hilton. I decided to stay at the modest sized, historic, and charming Hilton instead and it was definitely the right decision.

Here are the reasons that I liked the Hilton President. First, the Hilton is located close to a lot of the bigger hotels downtown and within a couple of blocks of the convention center, power and light district, museums, and good restaurants. Second, the customer service was wonderful from registration reception to room service to breakfast room wait staff. Not the fake smile type of friendly, but genuine midwest interest in your welfare. Third, the history is all around you - a cozy, old world feel to the lobby, real wood in the elevators, marble, lighting and interesting furniture, a breakfast area up a wide side stairway and popular, cozy bar down another side stairway. Fourth, my room was a corner junior suite, quite large, comfortable furniture, large work desk, plenty of plugs for electronics, large flat screen, and bathroom with modern features and large shower. Water pressure was not great, but certainly adequate. The heating system (it was 15 degrees outside) was surprisingly efficient, easy to use, and reasonably quiet. With older hotels, you never quite know what kind of room you will get - some large, some smaller, some with large bathrooms and some small. But that's part of the allure. Fifth, breakfast was personalized. Sure there was the inevitable buffet, but there were cook to order chefs right in front making your favorite omelet or pancakes and ample fruit, fresh muffins, and good coffee and the wait staff were attentive. And, sixth and most important, the king size bed was very comfortable and the pillows were high quality and plentiful. In my opinion, new is not always better!

Room Tip: I stayed in Room 422. Looking at the room configuration on the back of the door, it looks like ther...

Thank you for that wonderful detailed review of your visit to our hotel. You touched on so many points that make this hotel special. The old world charm of hospitality is evident, yet at the same time every modern amenity is at your leisure as well. It was a massive renovation that brought this grand hotel back to its original condition. We are so pleased you enjoyed every aspect of your visit, and we look forward to seeing you again sometime.

Stayed here overnight. The room was nice, with duvets on the beds. Bathroom was one of the biggest I've ever seen at a hotel. I didn't have breakfast, so I can't say anything about that. The one foible is that to get to the floor where we were staying, only one elevator is available. So leaving and returning to the room was always special. Still, it was a clean room and the staff was very helpful. Would stay here again if I needed to.

Thanks for the kind review of our hotel. It sounds like you may have been on the 13th floor by the way you described the elevators. The 13th floor has an interesting story. Back in the 1920's that floor was used as employee sleeping areas, as many of the staff actually would live at the hotel. The floor was also used as baggage storage and a carpentry shop. When the hotel was remodeled it was only possible to run one elevator car to this floor as that is they way the building was constructed. As you pointed out, the rooms on that floor are larger than most you would see at a hotel. If you are ever back at the hotel, let me know, I would be happy to share some additional interesting information about the hotel and the 13th floor!
