I am pleasantly surprised by Q39. Opening a new BBQ joint in Kansas City is pretty gutsy but Q39 has pulled it off. I've been here for lunch and dinner and was happy both times.

The ribs are tasty and tender and I do recommend them. The slaw has apples...good but not my favorite. We also had an order of Q39's version of burnt ends. This is really sliced brisket not burnt ends...do not be fooled. However, it was very good.

Now lets talk sandwiches. First try was "No Jackin' Around"...pulled pork and pepper jack cheese. Very good and messy. The sauce is pretty good too.

My recommendation: Burnt End Burger. Bit of heaven. Beef patty grilled to order with Q39,s burnt ends (really sliced brisket). I'll go back just for this. Full bar with lots of quality draft beers, too.

Be warned: Service is good and friendly but a little slow. The place is loud when packed with people...make that very loud. There are no burnt ends here...everything they call burnt ends is really sliced brisket.

Well the critics were right the food was outstanding. We shared the combo of ribs, brisket and pork. It was great. Beans were very good too. The website makes it seem fancier. It's not at all. There are some tables for 2-4, community tables and the bar

Ribs were amazing. Cole slaw had apples and also goo

From the outside it doesn't look like much, but once you walk in it is a very nice restaurant with good atmosphere, very large also so you can go with a big group. It was my first time trying a BBQ restaurant, i was impressed by all the trophies and prizes on the wall. i had the burnt end burger, and it was one of the best burgers i've had. although it was a little small for how much you pay for it. i got to sample some of the other meats on the menu also which were excellent.

In a city that's a deep pool when it comes to BBQs, Q39 has established a niche for itself (alongside Jack's Stack's locations on the Plaza and in the Crossroads). These joints offer a wide array of outstanding KC style Q, in a somewhat refined atmosphere (not flashy, but definitely no hole in the wall here). The brisket and ribs are exceptional, pulled pork very good, sausage good, and chicken average. Creativity kicks in a bit with fantastic looking burgers, a variety of smoked meat inspired dishes, and brisket sandwiches topped with O-ring and provolone - albeit copied from Okie Joes Z-man). The sauce is fine - nothing special, and a decent selection of brew is cold off the tap. All in all, date night bbq.

Our first visit. Almost too much buzz this early after opening. They need to smooth things out more.

Drinks were way too slow. Server seemed confusion, was slow, and lacked confidence. The atmosphere is superb, but almost too many employees, looked chaotic at times.

The food was mostly fantastic. Pulled pork, burnt end burger were very good. The brisket some of the very best in town, smoked well, moist, thick, just exceptional. The ribs were a big disappointment. Outstanding flavor, doneness, but, and this was unfortunate, way too fatty. We ordered 2 judges plates which contained 2 ribs each. One on each plate so fat almost nothing lean to eat. If better ribs were used these could be some of the best in KC, but not like this. They should have never left the kitchen.

One other issue. Portion size for 19.50 entree was way to small. Any other bbq in the city 20.00 would bury you in food.

Great potential, but the big endorsements are a bit too strong for what experienced.
