“OK Overall but not Perfect”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2010

For an older conference hotel, the Hyatt is not too bad. The rooms look like they have been recently renovated. The beds, linens and towels are fine. The bathroom was large. I didn't hear any room to room noise.

But there are several small problems that keep this from being a first class hotel. First there is the musty odor in the lobby. Then the key cards that don't work on the first, second, third try. I overheard someone else in the elevator saying she had to try her keycard several times before the light turned green and she was able to open her room door. The safe in my room did not work. The electrical sockets in the bathroom were old and the hairdryer plug kept falling out of the socket. It's not easy to hold the dryer with one hand and hold the plug in with the other! Also, the TV is not a flatscreen, which is no big deal just odd. All the hotels I stay in now have flat screens.

Also of note, there is nothing in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. No restaurants, no shops, no where to grab a coffee. The downtown area is about a 10 block walk, which is walkable, but not convenient for a quick cup of coffee or a sandwich.

The hotel staff was unfriendly and unwilling to work with us and our check-in situation. They seemed annoyed we booked on hotwire.com and got their swanky room on the cheap. The member of our party that booked the room was not there at check-in but called ahead to make sure we could check-in without her. They said we could since one of our names was on the reservation; however, we when we went to check-in they would not let us. The lady at the counter was rude and unwilling to help us find a solution. When our booking friend called the reservation line, they told her that we could check in with no issue, so we tried it again and were successful, but the original lady that helped us, completely ignored us. She also was unwilling to help me when I needed to but down a different credit-card number.

This hotel charges for parking and internet. There are several nice restaurants in the hotel, but all are overpriced. It is located next to Crown Center, but there is no convenient place to have breakfast, except for the hotels overpriced buffet.

The hotel offers great views of the city at night, but the rooms are not quiet and we could hear everything next door and in the hall way. We were even down the hall from the elevators, but could still hear them dinging.

We are not sure why this hotel was a 4-star. It was cheap to book, but we ended up paying more since we had to pay for parking and breakfast. We were not willing to pay daily for wireless internet. There was nothing convenient about this hotel other than its location.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. You are better off staying at a 3-star and getting free parking, breakfast, and wireless internet. The loss of one star will be a huge gain for your wallet.

Stayed at the Hyatt Crown Center, Kansas City, MO for the Blacks in Government Conference in August. Going to Hyatt I expected it be like the other Hyatt's I've stayed in, but it wasn't. The lobby was nice, the rooms could have been better. Every day I had a problem with my door lock. The engineer came to look at it and had a problem with it as well. On top of that, I had to ask for a coffee pot. This is the first time I've ever stayed at a four star hotel and had to ask for a coffee pot. Otherwise the hotel was ok.

My normal downtown KCMO hotel is the Westin, but I got the Hyatt on hotwire for $75/night. Like others have noted there is FREE weekend parking at the Crown Center, which is about half a block away, and a safe walk. My king room was spacious, with new carpet and a great downtown view from the 21st floor. Every employee I interacted with was nice as well as professional. The elevators are really slow. The bathroom would be better with a new tub, but it wasn't bad at all. In room internet is $10/day.

The Hyatt was in a great location, with Crown Center and Union Station nearby, as well as access to highways. Do not pay to park---unload your things, and then make a left out of the hotel driveway to the bank/Crown Center parking garage...it's free on weekends (& after 6:30pm on Friday). I felt completely safe walking from the garage back to the hotel. The service from the bellman was good. The rooms were decent and clean. The beds were comfortable, but they were double beds, not queen size. On two occasions our room keys would not work and we had to return to the front desk. Not ideal when you have 2 children and are on the 18th floor. The pool was very difficult to find---mezzanine level, then up a separate elevator, then up stairs and down a hallway...only to find that our room key would not open the door to the fitness center/pool! The pool was a good size, but in need of a little repair work. The Link from the hotel to Crown Center & Union Station was very convenient, especially since it was raining. I would recommend this hotel & would stay here again, although I do not view it as a "luxury" hotel.

The hotel is very nice. The rooms are smaller than we are us to but alright. We had a king size bed and it was very comfortable. The rooms are clean and service is very good. Now the pool and fitness center is to small for this size of hotel and very hard to find so don't bother to look just ask where it is because you will never guess unless you have a detailed map. The link is a very cool. It is a walking link that is glass and you can go the the crown center and union station. The shops in the mall are a little over priced but you can find some good deals. I thought is was awesome but not enough shops. If you are on foot your eating options are limited. We walked down and ate at Panera for breakfast and for dinner we went out. One night we had dinner at the bar on M level I think it is Prospects not sure of name but we ordered a two pizzas and they were great and the nachos are also a hit with us. Very safe area and that is why we stayed there. I believe it is over priced but we have never stayed in Kansas City, Mo so being in a safe area is very important to us and our teenage daughters.

If you have younger kids and or teenages you have to visit the Legends Mall. They have a Dave and Busters a big kid playground for older kids but smaller ones may like it. But they also have a Dinosuor restaraunt but it is cool. It reminded me of the Rain Forest Cafe but lots of Dino's. Little boys would just love it. Over all I would recommend the hotel but try to get a discounted price.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2010

I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City in July 2010 to attend a four day / four night conference held entirely at the hotel.

The hotel is tremendously isolated for those on foot despite advertisement to the contrary. Yes, it is connected to the Crown Center plaza (and Hallmark corporate offices), but Crown Center itself is simply a small mall with overpriced specialty shops that close by 6:00 pm from Sunday - Wednesday and with touristy restaurants that don't give a true flavor of the town. Other than Union Station, there is nothing within five blocks of the hotel that has anything approaching local flavor nightlife, and there are also no Walgreen's, CVS or other similar stores anywhere to be found for basic items for the weary traveler.

Value is also a problem at the Hyatt. Wireless Internet is free only in the lobby. Internet in the rooms is $9.95 per day. The business center is pricey. Food service (in-room or restaurant) is pricey.

The rooms themselves are relatively well appointed with a refrigerator, safe, cordless phone and small coffee maker. TVs are still tube models with limited cable options. Bathrooms are well appointed, water pressure is good and room HVAC is adequate.

One other note of caution - upper floor rooms on the southeast side may be subject to hospital noise (about two blocks away) that includes a trauma helicopter landing pad. I am certainly not going begrudge the need for a medical helicopter, but travelers will get a better night's sleep on the north side of the tower.
